game in the film, eitherโ€ฆโ€

Dominic grunts. โ€œLook, you have your thing and I have mine, dammit. Every time youโ€™ve needed me, Iโ€™ve been there and helped, havenโ€™t I? Why is it so hard to believe that maybe I have something you can help with? Whatโ€™s the deal, Autumn? You can take, but you canโ€™t give? Or do you only help the Gilberts or that angel boyfriend of yours? Is that it?โ€ he fires back.

I cringe at his words, but let them sink in. Heโ€™s right. He may be reluctant at times, but heโ€™s always helped when we needed him. Itโ€™s just that his timing sucks ass.

โ€œFine,โ€ I say, dropping my shoulders in defeat. โ€œIโ€™ll help you.โ€

What other choice do I have? I donโ€™t know if the doctors will be able to locate the source of Wadeโ€™s infection fast enough and Iโ€™m not about to wait around for him to die.

โ€œExcellent. How soon can you be here?โ€ Dominic asks, his tone brightening.

My eyes widen and I look around the waiting room. My momโ€™s concerned stare reaches me and I shudder. โ€œI canโ€™t come to you. Iโ€™m in Mistwood Point. Wadeโ€™s in the ER here.โ€

โ€œWell, how do you think youโ€™ll bring me back, then?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Dominic. But Iโ€™m pretty sure we can make it work.โ€

โ€œHell, no. I thought youโ€™d need the resurrection roomโ€™s energy. And maybe even Abigail to make this work. Itโ€™s not like youโ€™re super adept at the whole resurrection thing yet. Iโ€™d feel a lot better if you had some damn backup. I donโ€™t wanna die and stay dead, for crying out loud,โ€ he says, raising his voice.

โ€œFuck,โ€ I curse. My eyes slam shut, and I run my hand over my forehead. โ€œFine. Fine. Iโ€™m on my way. Meet me at the manor in two hours.โ€

โ€œNoโ€”no. You need to meet me at my house first,โ€ he says, sighing. Thereโ€™s something strange hidden in his tone, but before I can tell him where to shove it, he mutters, โ€œI donโ€™t have a car right now.โ€

My face pinches tight and I fight the urge to say thatโ€™s karma for carving up my bumper before we ever met. Instead, I say through gritted teeth, โ€œAnd why is that?โ€

Silence meets me for a moment. Just when I think Iโ€™m going to tell him where to shove it, he says, โ€œIt got repossessed, if you must know. Not everyone is as well-off as the mighty Blackwoods.โ€

My mouth pops open and a pang of guilt stabs me in the side. As much as he can rub me the wrong way, Dominic has clearly been going through his own shitโ€”and I had no idea. Iโ€™m such a shit friend.

โ€œSorry, Dom. I didnโ€™t know,โ€ I say.

โ€œWhatever. We got our own lives. Can you come get me or not?โ€

โ€œAll right, your place it is. Be ready.โ€

โ€œI was born ready,โ€ he retorts.

โ€œYeah, and on that noteโ€ฆโ€ I hang up the phone, rolling my eyes.

Inhaling slowly through my nose, I take a beat to consider my options one last time. Because, letโ€™s face it, is this really the best use of my time? What if shit goes sideways and I canโ€™t bring Dominic back? What if he comes backโ€ฆwrong? Itโ€™s not like things were super-stellar with Cat when I brought her back. Part of her soul split off and became a Fetch, for godsake.

But on the other side, I donโ€™t know how Iโ€™ll find the information I need to help Wade if I donโ€™t. This is clearly magical or supernatural in nature. And if Diana canโ€™t help me, Dominic really is my next-best option.

Plus, if I leave now, thereโ€™s a chance I can get all the information I need in just a few hours. Itโ€™s likely Wade will be in there for a while anyway and time is of the essence. I canโ€™t just sit here in this hospital waiting for someone to help him orโ€ฆ

Shuddering away the thought, I rush over to my mom.

The place between her eyebrows scrunches as I approach. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€

โ€œThe manor. I have someone who can help me. Well, help Wadeโ€ฆ But I need to be there in person,โ€ I say, trying to keep my tone light.

โ€œNowโ€™s not a good time, Autumn. You really shouldnโ€™t drive when youโ€™re so upset. Itโ€™s not safe,โ€ she says, her tone as cold as ice.

At least she hasnโ€™t used her โ€œmom voiceโ€ yet.

โ€œI know. Itโ€™s not ideal. Trust me, if there was any other way, Iโ€™d be doing it,โ€ I say.

She stands up, shaking her head. โ€œNo, I should drive. You really shouldnโ€™t be alone right now.โ€

My eyes widen at the prospect and I shake my head. โ€œNo, Mom. Itโ€™s fineโ€”Iโ€™m fine. I need to take care of this on my own.โ€

โ€œWhat about the Moirai? If they come for you while youโ€™re separatedโ€”โ€

โ€œMom, this is Wade. Itโ€™s a risk I have to take.โ€

Her eyes narrow. โ€œYouโ€™re pregnant, Autumn. Itโ€™s not just your life youโ€™re putting in jeopardy.โ€

Again, I flinch at her words. Sheโ€™s totally right, but Iโ€™m backed into a damn corner and I have to take control of something.

โ€œI wonโ€™t be alone for long. When I get to Windhaven, Iโ€™m picking up Dominic. Heโ€™s going to help me figure out whatโ€™s happening to Wade,โ€ I say, trying to sound reasonable.

โ€œDominic Crane?โ€ she says, surprise flashing through her features.

I nod.

โ€œHe never could stay away from you,โ€ she mutters, shaking her head. She watches me closely, but surprisingly, tips her head. โ€œGo. Iโ€™ll stay and keep you posted if anything new happens.โ€

โ€œAre you sure you want to stay? It might be a while and you donโ€™t have a car here,โ€ I say.

โ€œI know just about every person in this town. If I need to, I can hitch a ride home. Now, go. But please, for the love of all thatโ€™s holyโ€”be careful.โ€ She reaches into her pocket, relinquishing the keys to Blue.

โ€œThanks, Mom,โ€ I whisper, bending forward and kissing her on the cheek, taking the keys from her.

She wraps her arms around me, clutching me tightly for
