Dominic grunts. โLook, you have your thing and I have mine, dammit. Every time youโve needed me, Iโve been there and helped, havenโt I? Why is it so hard to believe that maybe I have something you can help with? Whatโs the deal, Autumn? You can take, but you canโt give? Or do you only help the Gilberts or that angel boyfriend of yours? Is that it?โ he fires back.
I cringe at his words, but let them sink in. Heโs right. He may be reluctant at times, but heโs always helped when we needed him. Itโs just that his timing sucks ass.
โFine,โ I say, dropping my shoulders in defeat. โIโll help you.โ
What other choice do I have? I donโt know if the doctors will be able to locate the source of Wadeโs infection fast enough and Iโm not about to wait around for him to die.
โExcellent. How soon can you be here?โ Dominic asks, his tone brightening.
My eyes widen and I look around the waiting room. My momโs concerned stare reaches me and I shudder. โI canโt come to you. Iโm in Mistwood Point. Wadeโs in the ER here.โ
โWell, how do you think youโll bring me back, then?โ
โI donโt know, Dominic. But Iโm pretty sure we can make it work.โ
โHell, no. I thought youโd need the resurrection roomโs energy. And maybe even Abigail to make this work. Itโs not like youโre super adept at the whole resurrection thing yet. Iโd feel a lot better if you had some damn backup. I donโt wanna die and stay dead, for crying out loud,โ he says, raising his voice.
โFuck,โ I curse. My eyes slam shut, and I run my hand over my forehead. โFine. Fine. Iโm on my way. Meet me at the manor in two hours.โ
โNoโno. You need to meet me at my house first,โ he says, sighing. Thereโs something strange hidden in his tone, but before I can tell him where to shove it, he mutters, โI donโt have a car right now.โ
My face pinches tight and I fight the urge to say thatโs karma for carving up my bumper before we ever met. Instead, I say through gritted teeth, โAnd why is that?โ
Silence meets me for a moment. Just when I think Iโm going to tell him where to shove it, he says, โIt got repossessed, if you must know. Not everyone is as well-off as the mighty Blackwoods.โ
My mouth pops open and a pang of guilt stabs me in the side. As much as he can rub me the wrong way, Dominic has clearly been going through his own shitโand I had no idea. Iโm such a shit friend.
โSorry, Dom. I didnโt know,โ I say.
โWhatever. We got our own lives. Can you come get me or not?โ
โAll right, your place it is. Be ready.โ
โI was born ready,โ he retorts.
โYeah, and on that noteโฆโ I hang up the phone, rolling my eyes.
Inhaling slowly through my nose, I take a beat to consider my options one last time. Because, letโs face it, is this really the best use of my time? What if shit goes sideways and I canโt bring Dominic back? What if he comes backโฆwrong? Itโs not like things were super-stellar with Cat when I brought her back. Part of her soul split off and became a Fetch, for godsake.
But on the other side, I donโt know how Iโll find the information I need to help Wade if I donโt. This is clearly magical or supernatural in nature. And if Diana canโt help me, Dominic really is my next-best option.
Plus, if I leave now, thereโs a chance I can get all the information I need in just a few hours. Itโs likely Wade will be in there for a while anyway and time is of the essence. I canโt just sit here in this hospital waiting for someone to help him orโฆ
Shuddering away the thought, I rush over to my mom.
The place between her eyebrows scrunches as I approach. โWhere are you going?โ
โThe manor. I have someone who can help me. Well, help Wadeโฆ But I need to be there in person,โ I say, trying to keep my tone light.
โNowโs not a good time, Autumn. You really shouldnโt drive when youโre so upset. Itโs not safe,โ she says, her tone as cold as ice.
At least she hasnโt used her โmom voiceโ yet.
โI know. Itโs not ideal. Trust me, if there was any other way, Iโd be doing it,โ I say.
She stands up, shaking her head. โNo, I should drive. You really shouldnโt be alone right now.โ
My eyes widen at the prospect and I shake my head. โNo, Mom. Itโs fineโIโm fine. I need to take care of this on my own.โ
โWhat about the Moirai? If they come for you while youโre separatedโโ
โMom, this is Wade. Itโs a risk I have to take.โ
Her eyes narrow. โYouโre pregnant, Autumn. Itโs not just your life youโre putting in jeopardy.โ
Again, I flinch at her words. Sheโs totally right, but Iโm backed into a damn corner and I have to take control of something.
โI wonโt be alone for long. When I get to Windhaven, Iโm picking up Dominic. Heโs going to help me figure out whatโs happening to Wade,โ I say, trying to sound reasonable.
โDominic Crane?โ she says, surprise flashing through her features.
I nod.
โHe never could stay away from you,โ she mutters, shaking her head. She watches me closely, but surprisingly, tips her head. โGo. Iโll stay and keep you posted if anything new happens.โ
โAre you sure you want to stay? It might be a while and you donโt have a car here,โ I say.
โI know just about every person in this town. If I need to, I can hitch a ride home. Now, go. But please, for the love of all thatโs holyโbe careful.โ She reaches into her pocket, relinquishing the keys to Blue.
โThanks, Mom,โ I whisper, bending forward and kissing her on the cheek, taking the keys from her.
She wraps her arms around me, clutching me tightly for
