βAnd you are?β
βHis girlfriend,β I say, a little too loudly.
βIβm sorryββ
βSo help me, if you tell me I canβt be with him because Iβm not married to him, Iβll punch your goddamn nose,β I yell at her, practically climbing over the counter that separates us.
Mom reaches out, tugging me back. βAutumn, let the woman do her job.β Her words are powerful, pulling me back from the edge of total insanity. I turn to look at her and she tips her chin and says, βBreathe.β
The adrenaline coursing through my veins begins to wane and Iβm suddenly dizzy with exhaustion.
βNo one is allowed in while they assess the patient. Relatives or not,β the woman says, settling back into her seat, relief clear across her face. βIf you can just take a seat while they try to figure out whatβs wrong, thatβs the best thing you can do for your boyfriend right now.β
My shoulders slump as Mom grabs hold of them, turning me to face the seating area. βThank you, dear. We appreciate it,β she says to the lady behind the counter.
Mom guides me to the small alcove with uncomfortable-looking seats. The space is decorated with soft pastel colors and fake plantsβclearly trying to bring as much calm to the waiting process as possible, but it falls flat.
βSit down, Autumn,β Mom says, pointing to a seat near the window.
I shake my head, walking out of her grasp as she takes her own seat. Instead, I pace in front of her, unable to shake the anxiety rolling through me.
βNo, I need to call Dominic,β I say, turning from her and pulling out my phone again.
Momβs eyes widen, but her mouth snaps shut as I place the phone to my ear.
Again, the phone rings a couple of times before Dominic answers. βLet me guess, Autumnβs in trouble again.β He chuckles softly under his breath for a moment.
My throat goes dry as I try to form the words to relay the importance in this mission. I know I suck already. I donβt need to be reminded that I only call when I need help.
Dominic waits for me to respond, not even offering to search the future to see why Iβm calling.
βDominic, something has happened to Wade. Diana canβt help me,β I finally say.
βSo you thought youβd call me,β he says. βI love being a last resort. It makes me feel super special.β
I roll my eyes, walking away from Mom and looking out the window on the opposite end of the waiting room. βWade could be dying and thereβs something supernatural going on with him. Diana thinks youβll be the best one to help with this. Thatβs why Iβm calling you. I hate that it seems like I only call when I need somethingββ
βBecause itβs true?β Dominic interjects.
βEven if itβs true, it doesnβt make this any less important. Wadeβs markβthe one his father gave himβis infected or something. Weβre at the hospital now. Heβs in the ER and Iβ¦β I break off, fighting the tears and the quiver in my voice.
Dominic sighs. After a long pause, he says, βOkay, Iβll help you figure out whatβs going on with loverboy. But youβll have to do me a favor first.β
Chapter 12
Life, Death, & Metamorphosis
My mouth drops open in utter incredulousness. βYou have got to be kidding me?β
I tell Dominic my boyfriend is in the actual emergency room, possibly dying for all I know, and the only thing he can think about is what he can get out of it? Unreal.
βNope, thatβs the deal or no dice,β he says, his voice like cold steel. βIβm sick of being the gopher and last resort in your little world. I have needs, too, and you can help with those needs.β
My stomach rolls at the way he says the words and my mind automatically goes to a worst-case scenario. βWhat are you talking about? What needs?β I hiss, clutching the phone close and praying my mom doesnβt have supersonic hearing or something.
βI know youβre not big on the whole Windhaven Academy thing anymore, but Iβm trying to level up. The new semester starts in a couple of weeks and I want to go into it as powerful as possible,β he states matter-of-factly.
I shake my head, unable to process a thing heβs asking about. Iβm talking life and death and heβs talking leveling up his abilities. Why am I even surprised?
βYou are the most ridiculous, self-centeredββ I spit.
βCut the crap, Autumn. Youβre the only one who can help me with this,β he says, cutting off my tirade. βItβs fortuitous timing you should come to me right now.β
βWhat in the hell do you need?β I snap, unable to hide the venom in my words.
For a long, silent moment, I hold my breath, waiting for him to explain himself.
βI need you to bring me back,β he finally says, his words barely louder than a whisper.
βWhat?β I say, narrowing my eyes and glaring at the fake hibiscus plant in the corner.
βLook, hereβs the thing. I need to level up my psychic powers. As great as they seem to everyone else, theyβre nothing more than parlor tricks, really. But in order to trigger a metamorphosis like thisβ¦ I need to face death,β he says calmly.
βLevel up? Metamorphosis? What kind of bullshit is this? Youβre not a damn butterfly, Dominic. You better not be pulling my chain. This is not the time for that if you areβ¦β I warn.
βIf I can trigger the metamorphosis, it means my abilities extend further, into the realms of the ancients. Itβll help not just me, but you, too, by the sounds of it,β he says. βItβs not really all that complicated to understand.β
I gape at the wall, walking away from where I was standing to pace again. βThatβs the most ridiculous reason to die. You realize thatβs what this is, right? Havenβt you seen Flatliners?β
βI know what it sounds like,β he retorts. βBut itβs not a game.β
I roll my eyes. βPretty sure it wasnβt a
