βButβ¦?β I ask, hanging onto every word she says despite myself.
βBut,β she says, tearing off another chunk of the cookie, βof the three of us, Aisa is the only one whoβs locked into her orders. Why do you think sheβs called the Unforgiving One? I mean, come on?β
βBut youβre different?β I ask.
βClotho and I, wellβ¦weβve both grown restless in the predictability of our roles. We have a tendency to root for the underdogs every now and again,β she says, winking at me. βOnce in a while, thereβs a particular family who captures our attention. Yours happens to be one of them.β
βIβm not followingβ¦β I say, trying to read the nuances in between what sheβs saying, but Iβm afraid if I do, Iβll read her wrong and screw everything up.
βLook, I know what youβre going to try to doβ¦and I have to admit, Iβm impressed,β she says, walking around the end of the bed toward me.
βI donβt know what youβre talking about,β I say, clamping my mouth shut.
Her face goes deadpan and she blinks back at me slowly. βDonβt patronize me, dear. Iβm the epitome of destiny. Who do you think finds these loopholes in the tapestry of life?β
I inhale sharply. βYouβre talking about me evolving.β
A smile breaks out across her face. βIs that what weβre calling it?β
I press my lips tight, waiting for her to continue.
βSo, hereβs the thing,β she says, pressing her palms together. βClotho and Iβ¦ Well, we approve.β
My heart practically stops. Dropping Wadeβs hand, I walk around his bedside, pulling her away from where he rests. βYou approve? Of me becoming a sin-eater?β
Saying the word out loud still feels strange.
βYes,β she says matter-of-factly.
My fingertips fly upward, and I press them hard against my forehead. The idea of evolving into a sin-eater was meant to be a surprise to the Moirai, not the other way around.
βThereβs just one thing,β she says, her golden gaze glued to me.
βOf course there is,β I mutter, almost scared to find out.
βIf youβre to do this, you canβt wait. The threads have been measured for each of you already and theyβre beginning to fray. Your friendβs father knew that.β She eyes me knowingly. βOnce Aisa has her orders, there will be no stopping her.β
βWhat about my child? If I do this,β I sputter, remembering what Abigail had said.
βThat is a dilemma, Iβm not going to lie,β she says. βBecoming a sin-eater means accepting the past regressions of those you take on. It affects you, body and soul, until you are brought to the gates of judgement. When your body is a shared entityβ¦β
βI wonβt do that to my child,β I sputter, shaking my head and backing away.
βThere is a wayβ¦β Lachesis says, shooting me a sideways glance. Her eyes flicker with a glow all their own.
βWhat is it?β I ask breathlessly.
She leans in closer. βSin-eaters typically deal in the land of the living. Everyone has sins they need to atone for. When sin-eaters take on the sins of others, they do it so they do not suffer into the afterlife. So their lineage does not suffer and curses arenβt born.β Lachesis holds my gaze for a moment, letting her words sink in.
βAre you saying what I think youβre saying?β I ask.
βIf you go back far enough, say, taking on the sins of Warren and Abigail, what do you think might happen?β she says, taking a step back to give me space to consider.
I tug my eyebrows in, confused. βThat would break the family curse. Abigail would be free to cross over.β
βAh, well, yes. But itβs more significant than that,β she says raising a finger. βOrdinarily, you wouldnβt be able to consume the sins of a lost relative. Once theyβve left for the afterlife, your chance is lost. However, when a remnant exists...β Lachesis pauses, cocking her head slightly, βsuch as Abigail. Should you consume the sins keeping her in this realm, the act erases those sins completely. As in, it wipes them from existence.β
βOkay?β I say, not quite following her train of logic.
She shrugs. βGranted, they would still be etched into your soulβand thatβs something youβll have to be judged for at the time of your death. But it would spare your child.β
βSo, let me get this straightβ¦ All I have to do is start my sin-eating with Abigail?β
βYes.β She nods.
βWhatβs the catch?β I say, shaking my head. βThat seems way too convenient. Am I sent to hell or something?β
Lachesis scrunches her face. βWell, where you would be sent to after judgement is hard to say. I cannot be certain. Iβm not the one at the scales. However, what I do know is thisβ¦ Should you accept the sins of Abigailβthe act erases everything. The curse, your familyβs history with the curseβ¦β She clasps her hands together, intertwining her fingers. Slowly, she raises both index fingers and presses them against her lips. She watches me closely, but continues. βThis also means you, poor Wade here, and your child would be free of the curse. Debts paid in full, and all that.β
βWell, thatβs all I need to know, then. Where do I sign up?β I say, breathing a sigh of relief. If thereβs a way to save them allβwhat more do I need? Of course, Iβll take it.
Her face darkens and she eyes me from under her brows. βAn act such as this alters time, Autumn. Accepting the sins upon yourself erases them from history. Iβm not sure youβre understanding the gravity of this. It could be that your family makes different decisions. Your life may take a different path. Maybe at the end of things, you never meet Wade, never fall in loveβ¦β She bites her lip. βNever have a child together.β
βWhat?β I blurt, my voice trembling. Sheβs right, I wasnβt understanding the gravity at all. Not even a little bit.
βThis is the only way,β Lachesis says, placing a hand on
