Nurses pour into the room, with Dr. Lockstad close behind. Her hair is pulled into a braidβdifferent from the last time I saw her.
βYou shouldnβt be resting here,β a male nurse says, extending a hand to help me off the bed.
βIβI know,β I say, trying to get my faculties back online.
βIβm sorry, youβll need to step outside, Ms. Blackwood,β Dr Lockstad says, sweeping her arm toward the door. Unlike before, thereβs an edge of panic that makes my stomach lurch.
βIs heβ? Heβs going to be okay, right?β I sputter, looking back at Wade and then to the monitors as I try to make sense out of whatβs going on.
Dr. Lockstad eyes the male nurse. βCan you get her out of here?β
Without a single word, he walks over to me and presses a firm hand to my back. He ushers me toward the door. βPlease go down to the waiting area. Weβll come get you as soon as we can.β His voice is far more even-keeled than the doctorβs, but still does nothing to quell the panic rising inside of me.
I shake my head, my voice reaching a far higher octave than anticipated. βNo, I wonβt leave him.β I dig my heels in, refusing to leave the room.
Without warning, a black cloud unfolds in the middle of the room. It starts small and expands outward until Wadeβs dad walks out.
At first, Iβm almost relieved to see him, until I realize what it could actually mean.
βNo, noβ¦β I say, shaking my head in warning to him.
βGoddamn it. Even when I know this is a supernatural case, I never expect stuff like this to actually happen in my hospital,β Dr. Lockstad says, pressing her fingertips to her chest and exhaling slowly.
βThis is Wadeβs dad,β I say, my voice rising to a higher octave.
βI donβt care who he is,β she spits back. βPleaseβthe two of you need to step into the hall. We need to work here.β
Wadeβs father turns his piercing stare to her. His silver gaze floats up and down her length, as if sussing out whether or not itβs worth fighting her or not. Instead, his gaze moves past her and rests on Wade. For a moment, his features soften.
βVery well,β he says. Without another word, he walks out into the hallway.
I stand in the middle of the room with my mouth hanging open. But after a moment, I follow him, afraid to be left alone in the room with all the commotion.
βYou canβt take him,β I say, jutting out my chin in defiance.
But deep down, even before he says a word, I know if heβs here to take Wade, thereβs nothing I can do to stop him.
People in the hallway stop to stare at us, but I canβt even bring myself to care.
βYou know as well as I do, itβs his time,β the Angel of Death says, his voice nothing more than a hint above a whisper.
βI donβt understand. Why canβt you do something? Stop thisββ I plead, pointing back to Wadeβs room. βItβs too early. Heβs too young.β
βYou know very well my powers are limited,β he says, a hint of sadness hidden in his tone. βAs much as Iβd like to change his course, I still have to bend to the direction things have been taken.β
βWhat about the mark? Whatβs going to happen to him if heββ the word gets stuck in my throat and I fight the urge to be sick.
Even after all the death Iβve seen, this is one I canβt accept.
He straightens his shoulders, but doesnβt say anything at first.
βYou lied to us about what it was,β I say, clenching my fists.
His lips are a thin line, but he nods. βIt was for your own protection. If you were to know what it truly was, I was afraid it would do more harm than good.β
A peculiar sense of relief washes over me. βSo, heβs not expelled?β
The Angel of Death eyes me silently for a moment. βNo.β
Solace mixes with anger. All this time, we thought he no longer had the legacy of powers. That he was mortal, but in just as much danger as I am. And while that might be true, heβs actually safe. He might die, yes. But heβll come back. He just wonβt be human. Heβll be forced to do his work asβ
βIβm pregnant. Did you know that?β I blurt out. βIf I can survive thisβour child will be without a father. You know what that did to Wade. How can you allow this to happen?β
My phone starts ringing in my pocket, but I donβt dare remove my glare from Wadeβs father to check it.
The Angel of Deathβs eyes flash with a mixture of hurt and anger and he steps forward, suddenly looming over me. βI have done nothing but try to protect the two of you. Much to the detriment of my own safetyβas well as his, I might add. If I interfere any more, the results would be far more catastrophic.β
βMore catastrophic? Is that meant to be funny?β
βChild, your pitiful human existence is a blip on the map of the universal flow. What do you think would happen if the Angel of Deathβs lineage were to be cursed the way your family has been?β
I take a step back, considering his words. βIβ¦I donβt know,β I admit.
βIt would be the start of annihilation,β he says, his nostrils flaring.
βWhy do you think I tried so hard to keep you two apart?β he says, his forehead a cluster of contempt. βI donβt want him to miss out on his family the way I did. But there were signsβfar before you and Wade ever met. The signs all pointed to two possibilities. Wadeβs early death or the end of the delicate balance of existence. I thought if I could just keep the two of you
