As the tea kettle shrieks, I turn the heat off then pour the boiling water over the leaves in my mug. It’s a blend that Essie made for me, one that’s supposed to help give me clarity while also calming me. Once my mug is prepared just the way I like, I step out onto my back deck to watch the sun rise. It’s a fallacy that vampires can’t handle sunlight, but since no one outside the supernatural realm knows we exist, I don’t worry. Instead, leaning against the railing, I hear the birds chirping their morning song as a hint of the sun peeks over the trees.

So much has changed in my life in such a short time that I find myself longing for simpler days sometimes. A few months ago, I asked for and got my own cabin. The vampires that were under Geralynn’s power are now integrated into our community, so it made sense to move into my own place. I’ve never really been alone; my early years weren’t pleasant, but I had a purpose then; keep Maverick safe from afar.

Now he’s our alpha, a badass in his own rights, and a Rogue Enforcer. Well, him and his mate, as well as several others including my best friend, Esmerelda. I shake my head, smiling. Maverick has come a long way from the curmudgeon he was before Connelly came into his life, that’s for sure. He’s still a bit of a loner, of course, but he’s surrounded by friends and family.

Family.

That’s something I long for, but I don’t see it happening for me. I know Essie has said there’s someone out there for me, but I don’t believe her. I feel my canines elongate as her mate’s brother comes to mind. Baldwin. He showed up when the rest of them were off rescuing Leigh and Ice and sparks flew between us. I think it’s because he’s annoying and insufferable, he claims it’s because I’m his mate.

After he said that, I’ve been studiously ignoring him. What do I know about being someone’s mate? Not only that, but he’s a polar bear, I’m a vampire. Of course, around here, that doesn’t seem to matter, so maybe there’s some truth to what he’s been trying to tell me.

“That stubborn vamp is going to be the death of me,” I growl out, frustrated because once again, she’s rebuffed me. I know she’s my true mate; she just refuses to see it too. I see how happy my brother is with his mate and want the same thing for myself. Is that so wrong? I don’t think so. I just got back from training with Colton. The men here could’ve trained me to become a Rogue Enforcer but after months of being ignored by Charisma, I needed to get my head on straight.

Two months I’ve been gone. Eight weeks of falling asleep with her image in my head, then waking up hot and bothered due to the erotic dreams she’s inspired. Yet when I went over yesterday to see if anything had changed, she practically pushed me off her porch then slammed the door in my face.

Something is keeping her from admitting our connection. I just need to figure out what that is...

I am a transplanted Yankee, moving from upstate New York when I was a teenager. I’m a mom of four and grandma of nine who has found a love of traveling that I never knew existed! I live with the brat-cat pack (all rescues) ‘deep in the heart of Texas’, as I plot and plan who will get to “talk” next!
