βThank you, Magnus.β
He pointed his fork at her plate. βYou need to eat. It doesnβt taste like much, but it is nutrition. You need a clear mind.β
She followed his advice, vowing sheβd never eat from a kiosk again if they escaped Salvation.
βJust so you understand,β he told her, βleaving here and saving that boy will never change what you did. Yes, if you give them enough secrets, the hardliners might try to rehabilitate your history. But youβll never be forgiven.β
She set down her fork. βI donβt want to be. I saw it happen, Magnus. A nuclear blast cutting through SkyTower end to end. Itβs always there. Itβs the last thing Iβll see before I die. But if I can do one good th β¦β
βExcuse me.β
She never saw him coming. Harrison Malwood stood at their table, hands behind his back, wearing a scowl of annoyance β as if he were the one being interrupted.
βDr. Tomelin. Mr. Levinson. Might I join you?β
βNot now,β Magnus said.
Ophelia added, βIβm sorry, Mr. Malwood. This isnβt a good β¦β
βThank you,β Harrison said, taking a seat. βI was surprised to see you both here. In public, I mean. Given your past.β
She turned cold, her eyes frozen on Magnus, who paled.
βI apologize,β Harrison continued. βThat wasnβt fair of me. It was a trick I learned years ago. How to confuse and disarm.β
βOr perhaps how to be a cudfrucker,β Magnus said. βYou werenβt invited to sit, Malwood.β
βNo, I wasnβt. But itβs a moot point. I hope youβre not surprised I know about your past. You do know my role for Brother James?β
Ophelia nodded. βYou run intelligence for him.β
βYes. Itβs an unofficial title. I try not to be obvious. I donβt want the crew to think Iβm spying on them.β
βThen youβve succeeded,β she said. βI always wondered why they kept you close, but they never gave me a straight story.β
βItβs been an adventure, I will tell you. Coming and going. Iβve traveled more light-years in the past five months than my entire life.β He turned to Magnus. βI run full background checks on anyone who might serve Salvationβs needs. If not for my report, they never would have taken you from Catalan, Mr. Levinson.β
βAre you looking for thanks?β
βNo. But I have been waiting. You two have been a curiosity project. Of course, I already knew your history,β he told Ophelia. βWhen I researched you,β he turned to Magnus, βI discovered a curious overlap seventeen years ago. The rest wasnβt difficult to find. Iβm surprised you took three months to touch base with each other.β
Ophelia held her anger in check. She knew this moment had to be far from coincidental.
βOur lives donβt concern you, Harrison. Whatβs your game?β
Harrison grabbed Opheliaβs beverage and sipped. He winced.
βNo games. Iβm aware youβre planning treason.β
She felt disoriented, as if balancing on unsteady wings.
Keep yourself in one piece. He doesnβt know anything.
βTreason?β She rolled her eyes. βMe? I helped Brother James survive SkyTower and I indoctrinated most of Valentinβs immortals.β
βWhich makes you the ideal traitor. And now you have your ex-lover to assist you. Yes?β
Magnus silenced her. βNo. Enough. We have done nothing but support Salvationβs goals. Iβve said maybe ten words to you in my life, so I donβt know your game. But you need to leave, Mr. Malwood.β
Harrison looked askance. βVoice down, please. If you draw attention, Iβll have to create a scene.β
βNo, you wonβt,β Ophelia said. βIf this was anything other than a bluff, Valentinβs soldiers would have arrested us.β
He sighed. βYou misunderstand, Ophelia. Iβm not here to arrest you. Iβm here to help.β
βWith what?β
βYou wonβt confess. I understand. But consider this, both of you. Most of my time in the fleet involves endless data study. I search holowindows for anything thatβs not there. Yes? Brother James demands nothing escape his eye.
βI study every log in this fleet. Every communication. Every entry and exit. Every pattern. I see things where there is nothing. Another trick I learned long ago. In this case, nothing led me to Nathaniel Cay, who is living onboard Haven. Heβs very conflicted.β Then to Magnus: βEspecially under interrogation.β
Magnus rapped the table. βIβve had enough. Iβm leaving. Ophelia, Iβll speak to you later? Yes?β
βYouβre not going anywhere, Mr. Levinson. I havenβt told you how Iβm going to help you escape this fleet and become heroes to the Chancellory.β
She saw it in his surviving eye. The man sheβd never been able to read came through this time. Heβs sincere. I think.
βWhy are you telling us this?β She asked.
βMany reasons. The first being that our interests align. You see, Iβll be coming with you. I donβt think any of us will be safe here much longer. Yes?β
βWhy? What do you know?β
βMore than either of you can imagine. They allowed me into their executive session today. I see the entire picture now.β
βWhich is?β Magnus asked.
βIn short, theyβre going to win. Their plan is more comprehensive than I imagined. I suspect, in the coming days, we will see unprecedented galactic fireworks. And then β¦ well, the farther we are away from Salvation, the better.β
Ophelia bit her tongue. If he really was on to something, he wouldnβt share details in public.
βYou sidle up here, mouth off insane accusations, and expect us to trust you, Harrison?β
βNo, please. Donβt put yourself out. I havenβt earned your trust. But if this helps, Iβll tell you something even Brother James doesnβt know. I wasnβt a rogue peacekeeper, as I told James. Yes, I did have a tour of duty, but I spent most of my career in Special Services. Learned all my tricks there. True, I did go native after they botched my recursion therapy.β
