Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (electric book reader TXT) ๐
Description
Don Quixote is a novel that doesnโt need much introduction. Not only is it widely considered the greatest Spanish literary work of all time, one of the greatest literary works in history, and a cornerstone of the Western literary canon, itโs also considered one of the firstโif not the firstโmodern novels.
This Standard Ebooks edition is believed to be the first ebook edition of Don Quixote to feature a full transcription of translator John Ormsbyโs nearly 1,000 footnotes. Ormsby as an annotator deftly explains obscure passages, gives background on the life and times of 1600s Spain, references decisions from other contemporary translators, and doesnโt hold back from sharing his views on the geniusโand flawsโof Cervantesโ greatest work.
The story is of the eponymous Don Quixote, a country noble who, in his old age, reads too many chivalric romances and goes mad. After convincing his grubby servant, Sancho Panza, to join him as his squire, he embarks on an absurd and comic quest to do good and right wrongs.
Today Don Quixoteโs two volumes are published as a single work, but their publication came ten years apart. Cervantes saw great success with the publication of his first volume, and appeared to have little desire to write a second volume until a different author wrote a spurious, inferior sequel. This kicked Cervantes into gear and he wrote volume two, a more serious and philosophical volume than the largely comic first volume.
Despite being written in 1605 and translated in 1885, Don Quixote contains a surprising amount of slapstick laughsโeven for the modern readerโand narrative devices still seen in todayโs fiction, including meta-narratives, frame narratives, and metafiction. Many scenes (like Quixoteโs attack on the windmills) and characters (like Sancho Panza and Lothario) are so famous that theyโre ingrained in our collective culture.

Just at this moment there came in at the gate of the inn a man entirely clad in chamois leather, hose, breeches, and doublet, who said in a loud voice, โSeรฑor host, have you room? Hereโs the divining ape and the show of the Release of Melisendra just coming.โ
โOds body!โ said the landlord, โwhy, itโs Master Pedro! Weโre in for a grand night!โ I forgot to mention that the said Master Pedro had his left eye and nearly half his cheek covered with a patch of green taffety, showing that something ailed all that side. โYour worship is welcome, Master Pedro,โ continued the landlord; โbut where are the ape and the show, for I donโt see them?โ
โThey are close at hand,โ said he in the chamois leather, โbut I came on first to know if there was any room.โ
โIโd make the Duke of Alva himself clear out to make room for Master Pedro,โ said the landlord; โbring in the ape and the show; thereโs company in the inn tonight that will pay to see that and the cleverness of the ape.โ
โSo be it by all means,โ said the man with the patch; โIโll lower the price, and be well satisfied if I only pay my expenses; and now Iโll go back and hurry on the cart with the ape and the show;โ and with this he went out of the inn.
Don Quixote at once asked the landlord what this Master Pedro was, and what was the show and what was the ape he had with him; which the landlord replied, โThis is a famous puppet-showman, who for some time past has been going about this Mancha de Aragรณn,661 exhibiting a show of the release of Melisendra by the famous Don Gaiferos, one of the best and best-represented stories that have been seen in this part of the kingdom for many a year; he has also with him an ape with the most extraordinary gift ever seen
