gaze up at Demitrius, and Oscar knew what was coming even before she let out another bloodcurdling scream. Pushing away from him, she scrambled backward in a weird crab walk, appearing more afraid of Demitrius than she had been of the mountain lion.

“Please. No. Stay away!”

Oscar understood that she was scared, but his temper rose at the treatment his lover was receiving after just saving the silly twit’s life. “Shut up,” he snapped her. “Demitrius is the kindest person I know, and he just put himself between you and a fucking cougar. Shame on you.”

“He’s a monster,” she argued with him, still trying to get away. “He’s a freak.”

“No,” Oscar answered quietly. It was his first glimpse into the sadness Keeton spoke of that lurked inside his lover. “You’re the monster—prejudiced, small minded, and unable to look past the outward appearance to see the goodness in his heart. People like you make me sad for our kind.”

Leaving her to her struggles, Oscar pushed up from the ground, walked over to his mate, and took Demitrius’s hand. “Forget it, love. She’s not worth it.”

Knowing the man Demitrius was, it didn’t surprise him when the guy refused to leave the woman without offering some kind of assistance. No matter that she’d screamed at him, called him names, and acted like a total idiot, he was still more concerned for her well-being than his own pride or feelings.

“Can I help you get somewhere? Or is there someone I can call for you?” Demitrius asked as he retrieved his cell phone from the front pocket of his jeans.

The girl finally stopped trying to run away and closed her trap, staring up at Demitrius in confusion, as though she expected him to attack her rather than offer any sort of help. “I…I…”

“Hey,” Oscar said, snapping his fingers in her direction. “Do you want help or not? And what the hell are you doing out here alone, anyway?”

“I was going to visit someone at that cabin across the pond.” She pointed to the center cabin near the opposite bank and blushed, giving Oscar the impression that her “someone” was most likely more than just a friend. Peeking up through her blonde lashes, she chewed on her bottom lip for a long time while she watched Demitrius. “I’m sorry for my behavior. It was rude and ungrateful. Thank you for saving me.”

She still appeared a bit apprehensive, but she had apologized and was attempting to rectify her previous behavior. Oscar wasn’t totally appeased, but he was feeling a bit better about the situation.

“Can we walk you around the pond?” Demitrius offered.

There was a long hesitation while she contemplated him again, but she eventually climbed to her feet and nodded. “That would be nice. I’m Cecilia, by the way.” Her eyebrows drew together, and she wrung her hands together nervously. “I’m sorry, but you are really, really big and kind of scary.”

“I get that a lot,” Demitrius answered with an easy smile. “I promise I’m not going to eat you, though.”

His casual dismissal of her statement pulled a cute giggle from the woman, and she took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. “Your partner was right. You are a sweetheart. I’m sorry again for acting like a total ass.”

Oscar liked the girl more the longer she talked. He could admit Demitrius’s appearance could be unsettling at first—even if he thought his mate was beyond delicious. If people would just take two minutes to get to know him, they’d find out that their fears were completely unwarranted, though.

“Let’s get you to your destination,” Demitrius said with a wink, though he kept a respectful distance.

So, they took off around the small body of water, talking and laughing as though the unfortunate incident hadn’t happened at all. Not that Oscar expected anything less. It was almost too easy to like Demitrius once people gave the guy a chance.

In that moment, Oscar decided that would be his new project. He hadn’t been the most sociable person, either, and he felt both he and Demitrius needed to interact more with the coven members. How were people supposed to get to know them if they never left the dorms?

It wouldn’t be a walk in the park, but hopefully, they could start changing everyone’s opinion, one conversation at a time.

Chapter Eleven

Desire coursed through him as he allowed his mate to lead him back along the dirt path that would take them to the dorms. Never in his life had anyone defended him so adamantly. More to the point, it was obvious that Oscar believed every word he’d said.

He knew how hard it was for the guy to speak his mind or stand against the popular opinion. His defense of Demitrius’s character was only more touching because of it. Pride filled Demitrius’s heart, but untamed—and less noble—arousal swelled his cock. Then again, it was hard to even think of Oscar without it making his dick throb.

This was different, though. The feeling engulfed, squeezed, and almost suffocated him. The dorms suddenly seemed miles away, and Demitrius wanted his mate naked and moaning five minutes ago.

“Demitrius!” Oscar’s gasp was cut off abruptly when Demitrius pushed his back against a nearby tree and plundered the depths of his mouth until they were both panting and moaning. “What was that for?”

“Can’t wait.” Demitrius’s brain shut down, instinct took over, and all he could think was, “Mine. Need. Fuck. Now.” Over and over the words chased each other around his brain until he was crazed with need.

Unbuckling his belt, he pulled the strip from its loops and fastened the leather around Oscar’s wrists. After another scorching kiss, he dropped to his knees, working feverishly to remove Oscar’s jeans. When his long, slender cock popped free of the denim confinement, Demitrius actually whimpered as he wrapped his fingers around the heated length.

Oscar didn’t speak a word, just pressed back against the tree trunk, spread his legs wider, and placed his bound hands on the top of Demitrius’s head. His cock flexed
