Kelsey got up from the floor as soon as they were gone, and hobbled over to the nearest window slit. She grasped the bar and shook the chains, but everything seemed secure.
โWeโre on the coast,โ she said. โAll I can see is water.โ
Aila nodded.
โThe walls are ten feet thick,โ Kelsey went on, โlike a fortress or something. Any idea where we could be?โ
โNo.โ
Kelsey glanced down at her. โYou better yet?โ
โI think so. This is my fault. I panicked when she grabbed my arm.โ
โDonโt be ridiculous; she could have killed you. I know youโre probably regretting your intervention back in Yoneath, but Iโm grateful that Iโm not alone. Between us, weโll think of a way to get out of here.โ
Aila lifted her eyes. โOh yeah? How?โ
โI donโt know. Theyโll get complacent if we play along for a bit. And they havenโt worked out how theyโre going to feed us, or let us go to the toilet. Theyโre bound to make a mistake eventually.โ
Aila shook her head, and resumed staring at the damp stone floor.
โCome on,โ said Kelsey; โdonโt get despondent. Didnโt you once tell me that youโd escaped from house arrest?โ
โYes.โ
โWell, how did you do it?โ
โI used my powers to impersonate lots of different people.โ
โOh. Hmm, well, that wonโt work this time.โ
โDo you think I hadnโt realised that?โ
โDonโt get snippy with me; Iโm just trying to help.โ The Holdfast woman patted down her pockets, then frowned. โNo cigarettes. Damn it. I wonder if the guards will get me some. If not, you might be in for a few days of grumpy-Kelsey, so allow me to apologise in advance.โ She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall of the cellar. โWhat do you thinkโs happening in Yoneath?โ
โI donโt know. If Corthie has any sense, he will have fled along with the others.โ
โBut that would mean the Ascendants will have the Sextant.โ
โI know. We failed, utterly.โ
โNot necessarily. Blackrose might have destroyed it first. And thereโs Belinda; who knows what sheโll do? I watched her kneel before Arete and Leksandr, but her heart isnโt with them.โ
โYou donโt get it,โ said Aila. โOur worlds might already be open to the Ascendants. Right now, they could be sending soldiers to the City, and greenhides to your world. Or maybe they could use the Sextant to destroy your world? Sitting here, wherever here is, weโd never know.โ
Kelsey shrugged. โIโm not giving up hope, no matter what you say.โ
โThen youโre living in a dream world. Itโs over.โ
โItโs not.โ
โLetโs see if youโre still saying that after a while being chained up.โ
Kelsey let out a low laugh. โDo you think Iโve never been chained up before? I was in shackles for months, for exactly the same reason that Iโm chained up now โ my blocking powers. People who want to hide from the gods have always wanted to get their hands on me. I survived that; Iโll survive this.โ
โYou donโt know that.โ
โActually, I do.โ
โWhy?โ said Aila, a smirk on her lips. โCan you see into the future?โ
Kelseyโs eyes widened. โI told my brother to keep that a secret.โ
Aila paused. โEh, what?โ
โDid Corthie tell you? I should have guessed he would. I hope you didnโt tell anyone else.โ
โWhat are you talking about, Kelsey? Did Corthie tell me what?โ
Kelsey crouched down by Aila, keeping her weight off her twisted ankle. โYou mean he didnโt tell you?โ
โIs this about Van? If so, then no; Corthie wouldnโt say anything about why he allowed you two to go off together. So, you can relax, sure in the knowledge that he sided with you over me.โ
โOh. Right. Well, I can see into the future. Corthie knows, and thatโs why he was happy for me to leave with Van.โ
Aila said nothing. She could recall Karalyn saying something similar in the Falls of Iron, and she realised that if Kelsey was speaking the truth, then she could understand why Corthie hadnโt told her.
โNo comment to make?โ said Kelsey.
โNaxor would have read it out of my mind.โ
โWhat?โ
โThatโs why he didnโt tell me. He knew that Naxor would discover it, and, well, my cousin has proved that he canโt be trusted. Are you just like Karalyn?โ
Kelsey glared at her. โI am nothing like Karalyn.โ
โExcept you can block powers and see the future.โ
โAye, apart from stuff like that. Also, Karalyn can decide if she wants to block someoneโs powers, whereas I have no choice in the matter; it just happens. The future thing, though? Aye, we can both do that, and I know Iโm not going to die here.โ
โWhat about me?โ
She shrugged. โI have no idea what happens to you.โ
โGood,โ said Aila; โI donโt think I want to know.โ
โBut you believe me, though?โ
โI guess so. After everything Iโve seen of the Holdfasts, it wouldnโt exactly surprise me.โ
Kelsey nodded. โYou wouldnโt have been my first choice as a fellow prisoner.โ
โDo you think youโre mine?โ
โNo, but Iโm the one Amalia wants. She tortured you so that I would give her the Quadrant back, and she might do it again, you know, to keep me in line. She seems to dislike you quite a lot.โ
โWeโve not had the best of relationships.โ
โTry not to antagonise
