“We have done everything we could for him. Now, it depends on how strong he fights back,” the doctor informed Sanjay, “We are hopeful that he could recover from this since he is young and in good shape. That gives him a fighting chance. However, his systems might start shutting down if his condition doesn’t improve.”
“What does that mean?”
“It might prove fatal, or it might result in a vegetative state. As I said, the next few hours are critical. We are hoping for the best.”
Sanjay took a deep breath and decided to call Tanya. After he informed her about the situation, she told him she was on her way. Wayne had no family left, and there weren’t any emergency contacts mentioned in his file, except for his office number. Sanjay sighed. How sad to not have anyone there for you when you are literally fighting for your life. He grabbed a cup of coffee as he waited for more updates and for Tanya to arrive. After what seemed like an eternity, he heard the sound of hurried footsteps getting closer.
“How is he?” Tanya asked as she sat next to him.
“I have no idea. The same condition I am guessing. No one has told me anything new since then. They are still monitoring his condition.”
Tanya sighed and leaned back, “I don’t understand what the hell is going on. He knew something, didn’t he?”
“I think so.”
She shook her head, “People at work have been panicking. HR has even received some resignations this week. People are claiming the place has been cursed. I don’t blame them, though. Too many disasters have been happening. Two lives lost, one wrongfully accused, and now one fighting for his life,” Tanya looked at Sanjay, “This is not a coincidence. Did you guys find the guy who did this?”
Sanjay cleared his throat and sat up, “Actually we did.”
“What?!! How come you never told me?!”
“It happened like a day ago. The guy is good though. He isn’t speaking at all.”
“What do you mean? Why don’t you just beat the shit out of him?”
Sanjay chuckled, “This isn’t a movie, Tanya.”
“You probably can do something.”
“Of course! The problem is that he had admitted that he did it, but he is not telling us why!”
“Ugh!!”
“That’s the problem. He has already confessed, see. All we can do is put him in jail. We might get him to talk, but I can tell he is going to prolong it as much as he can. There will be a case, but that will only be for how long he would be imprisoned and fined.”
“Can’t you pressure him into telling you why and who was behind it?”
“He has lawyered up. The lawyer claims his client has already confessed, so there is no reason for questioning. Plus, the judge would probably not be interested in why because there are some crazy people out there who do these things just because. The guy has pretty much said that he did it because he felt like doing it. What are you going to say to that?”
“What the hell!”
“Exactly. This happens. Everyone is more concerned about closing the case and moving on to the next. We know that this has something to do with what is going on, but we can’t prove it. This incident will be ruled as a onetime offence and that’s it. These people are good. They are being very careful about not leaving any proof behind. There was nothing found on Wayne that could point towards the case, the security footage shows that the masked guy just came out of the blue and started hitting Wayne; he didn’t take anything at all. He just wanted to hurt him.”
Before Tanya could say anything, the doctor hurriedly came to them.
“Please tell us some good news doc,” Tanya jumped up.
“You are here for Mr. Wayne?”
“Yes. He is my boss.”
“You are not family, though?”
“He has no family. It’s just work for him. I work right under him; you can tell me. Is he okay?”
The doctor hesitated and looked at Sanjay, who nodded, “Don’t worry about it.”
“Well, there is good news. His vitals are improving, and he is steadily improving. However, he is still unconscious, which is rather normal. He was in a coma, after all. The body slowly recovers from it. We hope he will gradually start responding and waking up.”
“Thank God!”
“You must remember that patients who come out of the coma require a lot of care. He will be confused at first. Agitated. He might not make sense of what is happening. He might ramble about things that might not even be true. He might swear and yell… Often, we’ve had to restrain such patients to prevent them from hurting themselves or others. I just want you to be prepared.”
Sanjay nodded and Tanya looked freaked.
“Of course, gradually his condition will improve. Fortunately, the brain injury didn’t cause too much damage, which means with some rehabilitation, Mr. Wayne will be able to recover and go back to his normal routine.”
“Thank God! That’s a relief.”
“When do you think he will regain consciousness?”
“It depends. It could be today, or maybe tomorrow. He might go in and out of consciousness, and he might not be able to talk initially, but…”
The doctor was interrupted when a nurse came racing up to him, “He is awake…” she announced, out of breath.
“What?!” the doctor turned to her.
“But his blood pressure is escalating. He keeps trying to get away, saying he has to save someone,” she looked at Sanjay and Tanya, confused.
“He is frantic, of course,” the doctor turned to the two, “This is normal. We have to restrain him
