I went back downstairs and fixed her a plate of eggs. She came down and sat at the island. I slid the
plate in front of her, and she looked at me with a surprised look on her face. She asked me if I made
everything myself, and I told her that I had. She seemed surprised at the fact that I can cook. I brought
my plate and sat down on the stool next to her. She looked over at me as she took a bite of her eggs,
and with a smirk on her face, she asked me if she had harmed me in any way last night. I wanted to
tell her that I had wished she wouldโve, but instead I decided to play with her a bit.
โNo, in fact, you put your arms around me, started rubbing my chest, and calling me Peyton. I was
quite turned on.โ
The look on her face was amusing. Her jaw dropped, and her eyes widened. She was so damn cute
that I couldnโt help but smile. She knew at that moment that I was joking, and she went to playfully
smack me on the arm. I grabbed her hands before she could hit me and looked at the scars on her
wrist. Our playful mood turned serious as I stared at them for a moment. I dropped her hands, got up
with my plate, and headed towards the sink.
โMy scars really bug you, donโt they?โ she asked in a serious tone.
โThey sadden me, thatโs all,โ I replied as I put the plate in the dishwasher.
โWhy, Connor? I didnโt even know you when this happened. Why would my scars sadden you so
much?โ she asked.
I kept my back turned to her as I stared out the window. โIt saddens me that someone could think so
little of their life to want to do such a thing.โ I know that was the wrong thing to say, and I probably
shouldnโt have said it.
โI told you why I did it, and it wasnโt because I thought so little of my life. I did it to lessen the pain
for my father, and how dare you, Connor Black,โ she started to cry.
She got up from the stool and walked out of the kitchen. I didnโt mean to upset her, but I had. I ran
after her, grabbed her, and pulled her into a warm embrace.
โIโm sorry, I didnโt mean it; I swear I didnโt. I just get sad when I see them because it reminds me
of what you went through,โ I whispered in her ear. I regretted every word that I had said. She looked
up at me as I gently wiped away a few tears that had fallen from her eyes.
โItโs ok; letโs just forget about it and head out,โ she said.
I put my forehead on hers. โIโm an insensitive bastard.โ
She lightly smiled as she whispered, โYouโre in luck as Iโm quite fond on insensitive bastards.โ
My first thought was to kiss her lips. I wanted to feel them against mine, but I had to hold myself
back. It was getting harder and harder each day to control myself with her, especially after last night.
So, I opted for her head instead. I kissed her gently on the head and smiled at her. When the moment
passed, we headed to the Range Rover to start our road trip to Michigan.
I threw our bags in the back as Ellery settled in comfortably. As I started driving, I looked over and
noticed that she was staring at me. She didnโt care that I noticed, because every time I glanced over,
she was still watching me.
โWhy are you staring at me?โ I grinned.
โI was just wondering about Connor Black, thatโs all.โ
I sighed and looked back at the road. She wasnโt going to give up until she found out more about
me. I know I need to open up to her, and I will; just not right now. She put her headphones on and
stared out the passenger window. I could tell she was irritated with my response. I tapped her on the
shoulder; she looked at me and took her earphones off.
โAre you going to ignore me the whole way there?โ I asked her.
โAre you going to tell me a little bit about Connor Black?โ she smiled in a cocky way.
My god this girl was starting to piss me off, but in a sexy way. I sighed and tried to think about
what I should tell her or better yet, where I should start. She turned her head and put in her
headphones again. I was not about to be ignored by her, especially for the next 10 hours because sheโs
too damn stubborn to respect my privacy. I reached over and yanked out one of her headphones.
โHey, what the hell, Connor?โ
โTake those things out you stubborn girl, and Iโll talk,โ I smiled.
She knew she won, and I bet she did it on purpose. There was no getting around not telling her
something about me or else she would make me suffer. I started with the story about my twin brother,
Collin and how he died when he was seven years old from a virus that attacked his heart. After I was
finished explaining the story about Collin, I told her about Cassidy and her son Camden. I explained
how Camden is autistic, and that heโs the reason my company and I are involved with the charity for
autism. She gave me a sympathetic look as she put her hand on my shoulder and started rubbing it. She
cared; I could see it in
