grazes it withhis teeth and I immediately feel the sensation. I want to ask himwhether he even realizes that he’s no longer a Selell. He’s a man.Na’ta was right; this universe has changed him.

“You’re brown, and sweet, like maple.” Histongue slides down my sternum, past my belly and onto my clitoris, where he latches on and I believe it’s his tongue that’s circlingaround it, over and over again, making me squirm because thesensation is overpowering.

I clutch the sheets and then his shoulders. He grabs my hips to keep them still, refusing to relent. After Ilet out a cry, he doesn’t stop. I whisper his name and he doesn’tstop. I moan, grunt, and sing out again, and still, he doesn’tstop.

“Chex, please,” I cry out, begging as myfemale dome absorbs the explosion.

Before the sensation ends, he quickly putshimself inside of me again—thrusting and groaning unrestrained. Heknows exactly what he’s doing to me, playing my body like it’s theharp, he is the musician and the notes are pure perfection.

“I don’t want to stop,” he says in my ear ashe rests heavily on top of me. “I don’t want you to ever do thiswith Lario Exgesis. Will you promise me that?”

“I promise,” I say without pondering. There’s no way I will ever engage in such an intimate act with anybeing other than Chex. I have made my vow, and it is so.

He stops to gaze at my face. I automaticallystart to memorize the curves around his mouth, the supple pink inhis lips and his straight nose, strong jaw lines, and highforehead. What a remarkable creature he is. Is this what a manlooks like? Are such features his allure? They’re so different frommine. His are powerful, indestructible. Mine are feminine andtender.

“Shit, I believe you,” he finally sighsafter completing his study of me. “I never believed anybody in mylife, and I believe you Ad’ru.”

We’re kissing again. I love kissing him. We’re rolling around on top of the bed. Our legs are weaving aroundeach other. My fingers are on his back, in his hair, grasping himaround the waist, his shoulders. The skin of our faces mesh. And Iam being energized by the desperate sounds that we both make.

“You have long hair,” he pants as he shiftsa portion of the strands that have fallen between our mouths out ofthe way. “You all do.”

“Yes,” I say between more kisses.

“It’s sexy.”

“It makes you want me?” I wonder.

“No… You make me want you.” His lipsand tongue smash deeper into mine. “Shit. I can’t stop.”

“You do know that you’re human, right?” Iwhisper as he gnaws on my neck.

And now, he stops.

Chex stands nude at the window, gazing outat the full bright moon that’s nearly perpendicular to the openedwall. His bare back faces me and I can’t help but admire the linesof his masculine physique. He is sullen. I keep my distance becauseit’s clear that he finds venturing inside of himself to be alone, comforting.

Memories of him making love to me still makeme quiver. Even I must take stock of myself as I sit against theheadboard with my arms wrapped around my legs and the side of myface resting on my knees. Watching him muddies my thoughts. He is aglorious creature. It was his bravery and loyalty that first causedmy affection for him. I turn my head in the opposite direction tostare at the opening to the room. I vaguely wonder whereMagnificent Star has taken Na’ta. What could she possibly have toshow her here in Dag that couldn’t wait until Chex recovered?

“Hey,” Chex calls, and he comes over to turnmy face back toward him. “What are you thinking?”

He’s staring into my eyes, patientlyexpecting an answer.

“I’m confused,” I whisper.

“About what? Me?”

“I’ve never felt what I feel for you. If I’mbonded to Lario Exgesis, then I don’t understand why I feel likeI’m bonded to you.”

He takes me by the hand and guides me to myfeet. Once I’m standing he wraps me in his arms and holds me closeto him. I feel is man part rise against me.

“If you keep this up, I’m just going to liveinside of you,” he says chuckling.

“So it’s because of me that you growfirm.”

He tosses his head back to release a heartylaugh. I watch him with delight. I remember when I first laid eyesupon him. He was such a miserable creature, emanating evil. And theblood on his hands… Now that I look at him, I can see that he isstill that Selell. The one with his weapons and hands of death, only I know him now, or at least I know his heart.

“What about being human again, as you are?Are you okay with that?”

He takes a long, contemplative pause.“Something is happening to me, but I’m not human. Not all the way,”he finally says. He snarls. “And I hate humans. I’ve known them fortoo many goddamn years. I don’t feel like those monsters, and theyare monsters, Ad’ru, they just are,” he pauses, searching forobjection in my expression.

No need to object twice, I’ve alreadyexplained to him how I feel about referring to creatures asmonsters, and he understood me perfectly well. Telling him once isenough.

“But I am starving,” he continues, “I’mthirsty, but not for blood, for water. Cold water. But I’m starvingfor more of you. And hell, the craving I have for you makes me feelmore like a vampire than the thirst for water makes me feelhuman.”

“How did you use to quench your thirst forblood,” I ask him out of sheer curiosity.

“I had mules,” he quickly answers. I cantell he doesn’t want to discuss it, but I do.

“Mules?”

“Humans who fed me their blood. I’d paythem. And there were some I didn’t have to pay.”

“Why not?”

He hesitates. I can see him deliberatingwhether or not he should answer my question. “They were chicks,” hefinally says. “Girls. They liked me.”

“Oh.” Goodness, I feel a pinch of jealousy.I can picture him standing here naked with another female and Ihate the vision.

Suddenly, I’m stepping backwards and he’smoving forward, guiding me to the bed. Once the back of my thighshit the edge of the mattress, he lifts me off my feet, cradling mein his arms. “But
