cold, fetid air sloughed off the slopes despite the morning sun, rasping and wheezing through the narrow streets. People argued over how far the slurry of mud and gravel would reach before it was satisfied. Red and Jessie dragged Emma onto a small fishing boat that was quickly filling with nervous people in mismatched shoes and uncombed hair. Greg and Lily sat in the next boat. Greg had thrown an orange anorak over his pajamas. Lily squeezed a small rucksack in both arms.

The one-eyed man argued with someone behind her.

โ€œWe canโ€™t get that far, not in this. You know that as well as I do. We can circle the island for a few hours, maybe a day. Thatโ€™s about all.โ€

โ€œAnd then what? What do we do about the paddocks? Our farm? What if our house goes?โ€

Emma used Jessie as a brace and turned her body as far as it would go.

โ€œItโ€™s OK. Diego Garcia will come.โ€

โ€œThe Navy? How can you be sure? Do we even have a radio on this hulk?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll come.โ€ Emma sank back against Jessieโ€™s shoulder and the young woman jumped.

โ€œOh! Mrs. Cambourne, what about David? Wait here. Iโ€™ll go and get him. If heโ€™s not here, he must be upstairs at The Rock wondering where you are.โ€

Emma reached out and grabbed Jessieโ€™s arm as hard as she could. It was weak, but the grip stopped her in her tracks.

โ€œNo. You canโ€™t go back on shore.โ€

โ€œBut your husbandโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHeโ€™s gone.โ€

Jessieโ€™s eyes went wide.

โ€œWhat? When? How do youโ€ฆ are you sure?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure. Just stay put. Itโ€™s my job to keep you all safe, and I intend to do it. No one goes back to The Rock.โ€ Her hand dropped to her side, too weak to maintain its grip. Jessie was frozen in place.

The air still blew off the mountain, but the morning light warmed Emmaโ€™s face. The rot and decay gave way to the smell good dirt gives off when the sun hits it.

โ€œWe need someone in charge of rationing water.โ€ Emma looked around at the other small boats and the people in them. There was Darren, and Lisa, and Steve. There was Zoe, looking around in panic and biting her nails. She could see everyone she had met on the island. But someone was missing. No bony fingers pinched at the frayed edges of her mind. She was alone in her thoughts. But among the huddled, blanketed figures she did not feel alone.

Whoever she had been running from, she was done running now.

Only then did she allow herself to think of David and let her fragile control collapse. She cried unselfconsciously, like a child. She howled until she couldnโ€™t breathe, and when she couldnโ€™t breathe her ribs wrung out her empty lungs. Jessie looked nervously back and forth, and others tried to hide the fact that they were staring. Red leaned forward and reached for her good arm. He put his hand on hers.

โ€œIt will be alright, I think.โ€

Emma blinked and struggled to get her voice back.

โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€“ excerpt โ€“

Cassie took in the dim hotel room with its unmade bed. A duffel bag spilled a cornucopia of old-fashioned cameras and recording equipment onto the floor, where a circle of candles smoldered. The half that were still lit dripped onto the carpet. She blew them out just to be safe. There was no sound in the room, no one in the bathroom, nothing in the closet.

Just as she kneeled to look under the bed, a small drip landed in the middle of the circle of candles. On the chintzy carpet it sounded like someone tapping on a hardwood floor. She looked up and saw the drop ceiling with its movable foam tiles. Two or three of them had turned a deep brown. She could get to them easily if she dragged a desk from the corner of the room and stood on tip toes.
