Laughter rumbles through my chest. “I might be emotionally injured by your insults if I actually gave a fuck, but I don’t, not about you, anyway.” Grabbing a towel from the cabinet, I throw it at his chest. “I’m here for Selene. I care about her, and she cares about me. She’s my family now.”
“All I need to do is seduce her, fuck her once, then you can have her back to share her with three other men. I, on the other hand, don’t want a woman I have to share. I already had the perfect one until the Accolades tore her away from me.”
“I’m fine with you only fucking her once, then I don’t ever have to see your ugly mug again. But what I won’t put up with is you playing games with her or taking time I want to spend with her. Get your shit together, Phoenix. I won’t let you near her until you do.”
Phoenix is in my face in an instant, fangs bared, red flashing in his eyes.
“Think you can stop me, guardian?”
My wings fan out, flames filling my palms.
“I’ve already bonded with her more than once. My magic is far greater. Maybe you can experience what it feels like if you get the stick out of your royal ass.”
“Get the fuck out of my house.”
“Remember what I said, vampire. I don’t give the same warning twice.”
Touching the charm on my neck, I cast the spell, then walk through the portal to Mordeeves Island.
Selene is where I expected her to be, in Griffin’s bed sleeping. Leaning over her, I caress her arm, and the branded feathers on her skin brighten. I’ll never get tired of seeing her magic recognize mine.
With difficulty, I leave her side for another matter I need to handle. Cyrus and Griffin are in the living room, already discussing the night’s events. Griffin gives me a welcoming nod, then slides a third liquor glass across the coffee table to me.
“She’s moving in here for a while. The invite extends to both of you.”
“That right?”
Grabbing the glass, I down it, then leave it on the coffee table and drop onto the couch with a seat between me and Griffin. I look over at Cyrus, who’s wearing gray sweatpants and a t-shirt instead of his usual professor getup.
“I’m guessing your shit is already in a room?”
“Not yet, but it will be. I’ll portal to work.”
“So, this is happening? We’re all moving in together?”
Cyrus shrugs. “You don’t have to if you don’t like it.”
“You wish, wizard boy. I’ll have my shit here tonight.”
“Now that it’s settled,”—Griffin sets his empty glass on the coffee table— “we have other things to discuss.”
Extending my legs, I rest my boots on the table as Griffin refills our glasses.
“It was a massacre. Probably fifteen vampires dead.”
“How did the Accolades know Phoenix was having the party?” Griffin pushes my glass toward me, then walks over to Cyrus to refill his glass.
“Either they had someone at the art studio, listening in on the conversation, or one of the vampires gave up the location.”
Lifting the glass, I swallow down all the whiskey while Griffin and Cyrus sip theirs. “My guess is they tortured a vampire for the information, and they gave in.”
“I agree,” Griffin nods before taking another drink.
“The Accolades are making aggressive moves, so we need to as well.”
Cyrus’s brows tighten as he adjusts his glasses. “What are you saying?”
“We give her three weeks to practice more of her magic, then take her to meet Killian. Phoenix is in a bad place. He’ll need to wait to bond with her.”
Griffin places an arm across the back of the couch as he positions himself to face me better. “Did he agree to that?”
“No, but we don’t need his agreement. He lost Vivian tonight and doesn’t care about bonding with Selene.”
Cyrus snickers. “Sounds like someone else not long ago.”
“We’re different, dipshit. One look at her on the beach and I wanted her. I was eager to get my wings back, but I sure as hell didn’t mind having to fuck her as much as I needed to.” I drop my legs and sit forward. “Right now, Phoenix is a danger to her. He doesn’t care enough about her not to hurt her. I saw that tonight.”
Muscles tensing, Cyrus leans forward. “What happened?”
“Overcome with bloodlust, he was ready to drain her dry if I hadn’t stepped in. Until he gives a damn about her, he can’t be alone with her. She’ll be too tempting. He’ll want a taste of that rush again.”
“As much as I hate having to say this,”—Cyrus rubs a hand through his hair— “we need them to be able to bond.”
Griffin finishes his glass and rests it on his knee. “We’ll be better off having Killian help us, and he won’t mind jumping ahead of Phoenix.”
Twisting the ring on my finger, I chuckle at my own thoughts. “Think she’ll be ready?”
Cyrus’s brows pinch together. “For what?”
“To fuck a wolf.”
