friend. It will not take long.”

The two lycans got in Kain’s car and began their journey to the Woods Edge.

When they arrived, Zane stood from where he’d rested against the side of his Firebird and opened the door. Kain watched as the vampire leaned in, but the tinted windows hid what went on beyond the door.

Kain got out of his car accompanied by Lune. The two lycans approached Zane in time to see not a vampire but a lycan get out of the back seat.

Beside him, Kain heard Lune gasp. The young lycan kept his eyes towards the ground as he walked up to his fellow lycans.

“This is Joel. Magnus gave him to me earlier this evening.” Zane nudged Joel forward. “I believe you’ve helped one like him before.”

Kain watched Joel’s submissive behavior with pain in his heart. The familiar scars around Joel’s wrists, mouth, neck, and shoulders brought about a sense of nausea. “How long?”

“That I don’t know. He won’t talk to me. He fought us when we tried to save him. I believe it’s been at least since adolescence.”

Kain sighed, “I see.”

He approached Joel and gently guided the lycan’s eyes up. He couldn’t have been older than twenty. “Turned from the looks of it.”

Zane nodded. “I believe so.”

Joel trembled beneath Kain’s touch. Kain motioned to Lune to come and help Joel while Kain spoke with Zane. Lune did as he was told, his eyes wide with shock.

With prompting and some struggling, Lune managed to get Joel into Kain’s car.

“How bad is it, Zane?” Kain asked, angry.

“Bad,” Zane replied. “That isn’t all I’m here for, though I thank you for taking him. Desdemona extends a private invitation to talk with you.”

Kain tried hard not to focus on Joel’s condition. It angered him to learn his kind suffered so badly in the modern day. He shifted his attention to the strange invitation. “What does she want?”

Zane shrugged. “I don’t know the details. Only that she wants to meet. Should I tell her you’re coming or no?”

Kain affirmed the meeting. Learning more about Anthony and having as many allies as possible, especially in the wake of losing Galeck, was all the lycans had against the Don’s power in the human world. He no longer suffered from the vampire’s natural aversion to the sun. He could call upon human hitmen at any given moment.

With another thank you, Zane got back in his car and departed.

Chapter Sixteen

Exhausted and mentally drained after getting Joel comfortable enough to come into the pack’s house, Kain trudged up the stairs to his den to find Tala naked on the bed and looking at her phone. All around the room, flickering candles gave off the smell of lavender, vanilla and a hint of cardamom.

He undressed down to his boxer-briefs and laid across the bed on his stomach. Tala’s hands rubbing his back helped ease him into a relaxed state. Kain jerked when she smacked his butt and giggled.

“Where’d you go?” she asked as she resumed rubbing his back.

Kain stretched out beneath her hands. He told her about Zane and Joel, leaving out the details to avoid worrying her. The feeling of her fingers tracing the scars on his back felt good despite their origins. It reminded him of what he’d seen in Anthony and how quiet Barghast had been. It took some effort to shove those thoughts away.

Tala crawled on top of her lover, settling into the shape of his body. “I know you aren’t telling me everything. It’s okay. When I didn’t find you next to me, I wanted to welcome you home with something relaxing.” She reached beneath Kain’s throat, caressing it and kissing his ear and jaw.

Kain relaxed, letting her do what she wanted. The sexual scent of her combined with the movement of her body against his made Kain begin to harden. No one he’d met knew where his pleasure points were, but Tala managed to hit almost all of them every time she touched him.

“Tala.” He whispered.

“Shh. When was the last time you let someone pleasure you?” Tala ran her feet over Kain’s calves to his feet. One of her hands held his throat, teasing his Adam’s apple while the other ran over his shoulder and side.

She wished to pleasure him for as long as she could. They’d been torn apart so many times she wanted to take this time to relish him. To enjoy every part of his gorgeous body.

Tala moved the hand caressing his throat to play with his lips, parting them to pet his fangs and tongue.

Tala whispered into Kain’s ear. “That’s it, baby.”

Unable to take anymore, Kain bucked Tala off him, bringing about a squeak from his mate. He got up and took his underwear off. If his little teasing lover wanted to get erotic, he’d be damned if he left her unsatisfied.

Tala lay on her back with a stunned look on her face as she stared at her lover at the end of the bed. Taking hold of her ankles, Kain pulled Tala until her butt sat against his thighs. “I have something I have longed to do to you,” Kain spoke in a low, sensual, almost demanding voice. His eyes full of a darkened passion. “Would it be alright?”

Excitement ran hard into curiosity in Tala’s mind at the idea of him exploring her. The thought combined with the hungry look in his eyes sent her into a state of untamed arousal.

She nodded, brushing a lock of her hair behind her ear. Her heart racing.

Smiling and elated at her agreement, Kain glanced over the full length of her slender body. The subtle curves of her hips as she moved her legs in anticipation drew shivers up his spine. Each muscle in her abdomen rippled, glistening with sweat.

A blush lightened Tala’s face in the dim candlelight. It surprised Kain when she covered her breasts and closed her legs despite the many times they’d had sex. He assumed it had to do with
