to the straps of my backpack that sit on my shoulders and walk the short distance to the café in between my hotel and Ally’s apartment.

As soon as I take a seat, the woman behind the counter smiles and waves before asking if I want my usual. Coming here each day has helped me understand Spanish a little better, but my handy dictionary does the rest for me.

I open my laptop and tap the space key a few times to wake it up. Once the screen lights up, I begin reading emails and working through my tasks for the day. I thank the server when she drops off my black coffee and focus back on my computer.

Time flies as I work on a gaming application and drink another coffee.

“Hello?” I answer my phone when it vibrates on the table.

“Camden, hi, it’s Jim. Our app is acting up, and I need you to take a look.” I lean my forehead on my free hand and close my eyes.

“I’m out of the country,” I sigh because I know that it won’t matter to him.

Jim has been one of my long-standing clients, and I’ve been his computer engineer since he started up his company, and he hired me to create his business application. He runs an automotive company where he wholesales car parts, and his application allows clients to make orders through it and schedule appointments—sales at the tip of your fingers.

“What’s going on with it?” I start tapping keys as he explains how the orders aren’t going through, some clients are getting billed twice, and inventory is showing up that’s been discontinued for some time.

“Crap,” I mumble. “I’ll see what I can do from my end.”

“I’d prefer it if you can come to the office and we look at it together. You can also see if there’s something else with our system that’s making trouble.”

I breathe heavily and shake my head. Jim’s been great to work with, but he’s definitely the hands-on kind of guy, and he needs to be present to see what’s going on. In other words, he’s a visual learner that needs to be shown step by step, even if he isn’t the one directly working with the app.

“Let me see what I can do. I’m currently abroad, but I’ll see if I can book a short trip there and back.” My brain starts to spin different ideas, but if he needs me there, I know I have no choice but to fly to Richmond for a few days and work this out.

“Let me know,” he says before hanging up.

I scrub a hand down my face as my cheeks puff with my deep breath. I’ll hate to leave Allyson right now when things are going well between us, and she has the pending prenatal tests, but if I’m quick enough, I can go and come back in time.

Before I can get back to work, a text message pops up on my phone. When I see Easton’s name on the screen, my heart stops. We haven’t spoken since Saturday when we told him the news. I have no idea what he’s going to say, but one thing I do know about Easton is that the longer he stews, the worse it is.

Swiping my phone unlocked, I read his message.

Easton: Hey, I’m not sure what exactly is going on between you and Ally but we should talk

Camden: I agree. I’m finishing up some work and will head back to my hotel room. I can call you

Easton: When will you be back in Richmond? I rather talk in person

Fuck. I scratch my jaw as I think about this. What does he have to say to me that he can’t say over the phone?

Camden: I may have to fly back for a few days, so I’ll let you know

Easton: Sounds good. I’ll try to meet you there

I finish up some more work before packing up and heading back to my hotel room. After Easton’s messages, my concentration has been shot. For all I know, he wants to talk in person so he can punch me for knocking up his sister.

Once I’m back in my room, I call the airline and find out if there’s a flight in the coming days. My best bet is to buy a round trip flight and leave my other ticket open since I plan to come back.

I’m going to hate telling Ally that I have to leave, but it’s the reality of our situation. She lives here, and I live in the US. Regardless of what we’re building between us, unless one of us changes our lifestyle, we’ll always be faced with these predicaments.

I place a twenty-four-hour hold, so I don’t lose the flight. After I talk to Ally tonight, I’ll finalize my reservation. It’s important that I’m here for her prenatal test, so I want to confirm the date to make sure I will be back by then, and I’m not confident the date I remember is the correct one.

Then, I take advantage of the hotel’s gym and head down for a workout. Nothing is better to release stress than push-ups and some miles on the treadmill.

“Hey,” Allyson smiles as she walks up to her building.

I push myself off the wall by the door and walk toward her, grabbing the back of her neck and kissing her. We may not have labeled our relationship, but in my eyes, we’re together. The other night changed things for me in more ways than I could’ve imagined.

The feelings I’m having toward her are more than lust-induced. Allyson is more than a woman I met at a bar.

“How was your day?” I ask, still holding the back of her neck and touching my forehead to hers, breathing her in.

“It was good. Same ole, same ole.” I chuckle and grab her keys from her hand, turning the lock and holding the door open.

“Let’s get upstairs.”

As we ride up the elevator, Allyson
