we’ll never be apart

May you stay in the arms of the angels

It’s “Lullaby For A Soldier”. One of the soldiers sang it in camp at night by the fire.

She stops and the dust settles. The sun is shining so bright that it isn’t until she’s standing over me, looking down, that I see her. Molly.

“Molls?” I whisper, reaching my hand to her. She steps back, staring at my fingers. There’s blood coating them.

“Get up, Daddy,” she whispers. “Get up.” She suddenly looks terrified. “Daddy, please,” she begs and tears start to fall down her rosy cheeks.

“I love you,” I say, forcing a smile. I blink and when I open my eyes again, she’s gone. I cry out. I know what they do here to children, so I shout her name over and over. Someone has to hear me.

Chapter Eighteen

RIGGS

I swear, since Anna had Willow, she’s punishing me. Willow screams against my chest. “Someone find my fuckin’ wife!” I yell over the wailing.

“Left holding the baby again, Pres?” asks Chains with a grin.

“Shouldn’t you be looking after my sister?” I growl and he loses the grin.

Anna comes rushing down the stairs. “Everything okay?” she asks. I take in her flustered appearance.

“Where have you been?” I snap.

She takes Willow, who immediately stops screaming. “Having some peace,” she mutters.

“You look flustered,” I point out and she rolls her eyes. “Where have you been?” I repeat.

“I was upstairs. You’ve just seen me come down,” she snaps, moving back in that direction.

“Alone?” I growl.

“Who else would I be with?” she yells.

“Why do you look flustered? Why are your fuckin’ cheeks red?” I shout, following her.

It ain’t no secret we’ve had a rough few months. Her springing Willow on me was the start of it. Now, she barely looks in my direction. “I haven’t seen that look on your face since I put Willow in your belly,” I snap.

“Maybe because you don’t come close enough,” she retorts. She’s right. At first, it was because I felt bitter that she lied. Now, it’s become a bad habit. I go to bed late and wake up early. I’m tired all the goddamn time. This club drains every ounce of life outta me. But right now, I feel like it’s all I’ve got. That and Ziggy. “And now you have the cheek to accuse me of looking elsewhere,” she adds, stopping at the bedroom door. “If I did, would you give a shit?”

“Of course I would!” I snap. “You belong to me!”

“What’s the point in laying claim when you have nothing to do with me?” she hisses.

“Open the door, Anna,” I say.

She laughs. “You think I have someone in our bed waiting for me?”

I push my face closer. “I don’t know anymore, Anna. Your lies wrap around us like vines,” I growl.

“One day, you’ll wake up and I’ll be gone. A good man will snatch me from under your nose and treat me like I deserve. It doesn’t matter what I do, we always end up back here. I leave, you beg me back, things change for a few weeks, and then we come back to this. I don’t know how much longer I can do it for, Finn.” Her eyes flicker with sadness for the briefest second and then she pushes the door open and lets me go inside.

On the bed is a book, one of those trashy romance novels Eva keeps lending her, and a vibrator. “I’m cheating on you with a sex toy,” she mutters. “So sad, it’s pathetic.”

Out of habit, I check the bathroom, but of course it’s empty. Why do I do this to us? I keep my back to her, trying to find the words to make it right because despite it all, I love her. I’ll never let her go because I need her like I need air in my lungs. I turn to explain, but she’s already gone. “Fuck,” I whisper to myself. My phone buzzes. It’s Vinn.

“I’m in the carpark of the Hilton. Your boy is on the concrete with a bullet in his shoulder. He’s lucky that the ambulance arrived before me or I would have finished him.”

“What are you talking about?” I snap, too tired to work out his riddles.

“Blu. He’s out cold, the pussy.”

“Blu’s been shot?” I make my way downstairs, taking two at a time. I whistle to Cree and he joins me in the office. I put the call on loudspeaker. “Blu’s been shot,” I tell Cree.

“The real question is where the fuck is my sister,” says Vinn. There’s some rustling. “Move,” says Vinn. We hear what sounds like a paramedic insisting that Vinn stay back. “He’ll never wake up with you whispering in his ear,” snaps Vinn to the paramedic. “I need to know what happened.” There’s a loud growl. “That’s better. A finger straight in the bullet hole is enough to wake the dead. Afternoon, lover, where the fuck is my sister?”

“Christ,” mutters Cree. “Did he just stick his finger in Blu’s bullet wound? He’s a nutter.”

“He’s off for a ride in the ambulance,” Vinn tells us. “Give him all the attention of the sirens and flashing lights, boys. Get him there fast before I change my mind and finish the useless shit off,” says Vinn to the paramedics. “I got his blood on my finger and the idiot passed straight back out. Get to the hospital. As soon as you’ve spoken to him, call me. In the meantime, I’ll be searching London.” Vinn disconnects the call and I stare at Cree.

“Get Blade to sit at the hospital. We’d better find Vinn before he causes some damage,” I say.

BLU

“Fuck yeah.” It’s Blade’s voice I can hear somewhere in the room. He’s panting hard. “Harder,” he pants.

“Christ, you’d better not be wanking over me,” I mutter, opening one eye and spotting him in the far corner of the room with a nurse on her knees sucking his cock.

“Fuck, Blu. You could have stayed quiet for another minute. I was almost
