βEnd of what?β
Even as the next words arrived, Sam struggled to believe them. Yet as she spoke, the grief of the fallen JβHai filled her heart.

M ICHAEL REFUSED TO SLOW DOWN for anyone. He walked as fast as the ever-changing terrain allowed. The DR29 provided extraordinary night vision, a tool his companions lacked. Five hours, twenty-eight minutes nonstop. He heard their complaints β especially from Aldo, who had not pushed himself like this in decades. Michael didnβt expect the old man to make it the distance; even if he did, Aldo would be physically defeated and perhaps a liability. He was relieved when the former fleet commander stumbled to the ground and cursed, holding his left quadricep.
βCudfrucker,β he said three times. βI should have known better.β
Maya raced to his side. βHow bad is it, Aldo?β
βIt just seized up. Damn extract. Makes you feel unbeatable when youβre wrong, but itβs no cure at my age.β
βBrontinium extract? Youβve been taking supplements?β
βSmall. Occasional. Watered down.β
βYou still had some after all this time? How?β
Aldo laughed through his pain. βIβm a greedy bastard, thatβs how. Certain descendancies have had unofficial access to reserves. Fortunately, Aldo has a few friends out there.β
Michael didnβt care about Chancellors hoarding brontinium. It was simply another item on his endless list: Why Chancellors are Assholes. This was taking too much time.
βBottom line, Aldo,β Michael said. βCan you keep up?β
βI could with a break.β
βHow long?β
βAn hour should do the trick.β
βNot a chance. Timeβs running out, and weβre not far away. I estimate we got two hours before dawn.β
βWait, what?β Maya said. βYou havenβt said a word in the past hour. How do you know weβre close?β
βDR29 sweep. Iβve picked up their settlement. Itβs eight and a quarter K. I think we might catch a break and find transport sooner.β
She pointed to Aldo, who was massaging his leg.
βTransport? Michael, thatβs what he needs. When were you planning to tell us?β
He shrugged and let loose the truth.
βI wasnβt unless you asked. Sorry, but Iβm doing my best to keep my brain from exploding. Iβm still trying to sort it all, and I do it best when Iβm walking. We need to go.β
βWeβre a team, Michael. Will one extra hour make a difference?β
βEnough to get Sam incinerated. This shit is bigger than anybody realizes. We canβt measure the future in days anymore. Itβs down to hours, maybe minutes.β
She softened her tone, falling into Maya the Counselor mode.
βThen now is the perfect chance to make us understand what is at stake, Michael. Five hours ago, you said this was βthe endβ and never explained yourself. Bring us into the light. Please.β
βFine. Iβll try. But only if we walk. Look, Aldo. Iβll carry you.β
Aldo raised a hand and commanded both of them to shut up.
βNo. Michael, this is your mission. Youβre best equipped to handle it. Iβll get in the way. If you know where the settlement is, drop the coordinates on my admin stack. Iβll catch up when I can.β
βDonβt need to,β Michael said. βFollow the river. Youβll come to a sharp drop in elevation. Youβll figure out the rest from there.β
Aldo nodded. βSimple enough. Maya, look after this fine young soldier. Make sure he doesnβt leap too far too fast.β
βHere,β she said, providing Aldo with supplies and the glow pod. βYouβre certain this is what you want?β
βI am.β He examined the sky full of stars and sighed with a measure of satisfaction. βI actually made it back here. Iβll be damned. Take care of yourselves. Weβll share notes in a day or three. Yes?β
Michael shook his hand. βThank you, Aldo. I wouldnβt be here if it werenβt for you.β He offered Cm. Cabrise a side-nod, which was reciprocated. βWe gotta go, Maya. Keep up.β
Michael reset the DR29 and his emotions then pushed forward, at first oblivious to whether Maya followed. The convex gradient latched onto activity two kilometers north of the settlement. A handful of people clustered around an unfamiliar device. Machines hovered nearby. Rifters. We have to get there.
If they ran, theyβd make up for lost time. But what of Maya? She was a warrior when she had to be, but an athlete? A body built to run for miles? He didnβt want to chance another delay. A couple hundred meters beyond Aldo, Michael heard footsteps close behind.
βItβs just as well,β he told Maya, maintaining a steady pace. βHe would have gotten himself killed where weβre going. If I hadnβt seen you in action, Iβd be wondering how to keep you safe, too.β
Maya caught up and walked abreast.
βI donβt disagree, Michael, but you need to tell me what weβre walking into. What did you learn earlier? You said that tower showed you the truth about everything. If you donβt start talking now, Iβm turning around, and youβll be on your own.β
βYeah, look. Iβm sorry. Itβs just β¦ Iβve been trying to make sense of it all, and Iβm about to lose my shit inside this helmet. OK, look. When the Jewel was with you, it talked about its purpose. You said it told you about the algorithm of life and predicted all paths would intersect here. Right?β
βIt did.β
βOK. And it said they were created a million years ago and have been traveling the universe ever since. Right?β
βYes.β
βAnything else? Like, say, why they left their home world?β
βNo.β
βThatβs what I thought. And if Iβm right, they ainβt been too keen on sharing that information with many folks. Maybe not even James. Especially him.β
βWhat do you mean, Michael?β
He put his thoughts in order and prepared to
