She set the phone down and came running.
โYouโll never guess what!โ
โWhat?โ
โThat was forensics, an update report on Belindaโs house.โ
โAnd?โ
โThey have a fingerprint match from Belโs bedroom.โ
โYeah, Iโll bet they have, and it will be Williams, Speight, or Donaldson.โ
โNo Guv, thatโs the crazy thing, itโs Michael Flanaganโs print!โ
There was a momentโs stunned silence as communal brains in-took fresh information.
Karen breathed out heavy.
Gibbons said, โOh no, I couldnโt bear it, surely Hector hasnโt been right all along.โ
Walter pursed his lips as if about to whistle, though no sound came. Then he said, โThat is interesting, Jenny, mind you, he could have left the print there anytime. Get on to the tag people again; double double double check to see if his tag could have been faulty. If he was there in Berryland Avenue at the time of the murder the tag must have been interfered with.โ
โTriple check even,โ muttered Gibbons.
โOn it, Guv,โ said Jenny.
โI wonder why Corla didnโt pick him out,โ said Walter, thinking aloud.
โYou saw her, Guv, you saw how close she was to doing so.โ
โMmm, yes, but she didnโt though, did she?โ
โWhat now?โ asked Karen.
Walter glanced at the clock. Nearly half past six. Michael Flanagan would have to be home within the next half hour.
โYou and I are going to pay a visit to Mr Flanaganโs neat little house in Christleton, where we are going to arrest him in connection with the murder of Belinda Cooper, and maybe Eleanor Wright as well.โ
โGet in, Guv!โ said Gibbons. โA result!โ
โNot yet, Gibbons, not yet.โ
Hector looked incredibly smug.
โDo you want us to wait on?โ asked Gibbons.
Walter bobbed his head and said, โPlease, just until we get back, you can stay on as long as you like after that.โ
โKaren!โ
โI know, Guv, a car and an unmarked one at that.โ
โYou got it, and Jenny, can you make sure we have the full forensic report as soon as poss, so we can have a quick scan through it.โ
โOn it, Guv.โ
Thirty-Four
Outside, it was already full dark and getting noticeably colder. The streets were still busy. On the short trip to Christleton, Walter said, โWhat were you going to say earlier?โ โOh, itโs not important, Guv, another time, maybe,โ and that fitted in well, for they were already pulling in close to Flanaganโs house. Karen doused the lights and said, โHeโs in.โ
โSo I see,โ or at least the lights were on downstairs, though the curtains were drawn. โMake sure we seize his computer.โ
โFor sure,โ she said, looking forward to getting inside it and checking it out.
Walter felt deep into his raincoat pocket. The cold steel cuffs were there, ready and waiting for business, and Walter intended on using them. They went to the door and Karen rang the bell. A moment later a large shadowy figure appeared behind the glass. Flanagan opened the door and hiccupped and stared out.
โNot you again, what do you want now?โ
He stank of beer.
โMichael Flanagan, I am arresting you in connection with the murders of Belinda Cooper and Eleanor Wright,โ and before the guy could say anything at all, Walter reached forward and slipped the cuffs round Flanaganโs left wrist, and cuffed it, grabbed his right, and clipped it closed. Karen read him his rights.
โYouโve just had me on an ID parade, for fuckโs sake! She didnโt pick me out. Iโm innocent! What more do you want?โ
โNew information has just come to light.โ
โWhat kind of new information? Youโre trying to fit me up.โ
โAll will be revealed back at the station. Karen, collect the computer. We are seizing that as evidence.โ
โYou canโt do that!โ
โWe can.โ
Karen collected the computer from the lounge, as Flanagan slipped on some shoes. She glanced at him and said, โThere are no pay and display girls skulking about upstairs, are there?โ
โDonโt be absurd!โ
โAnything else you need, medication or anything at all?โ asked Walter.
โIโm not on bloody medication! Itโs you lot who should be on the meds.โ
โWhere are your keys?โ asked Walter.
โOn the ring, there,โ said Flanagan, nodding to some hooks beside the door. โItโs the fat bronze one.โ
Karen took it down and began turning everything off, TV, lights, cooker, where some kind of heavy and meaty dinner was on the go.
โIf you take me out of the house now Iโm going to break my bloody tag-time.โ
โYou donโt need to worry about that, weโll let them know you are with us.โ
โYouโd better! I donโt want to do extra time because of you, and I want to see a solicitor.โ
โAll that can be arranged at the station. Do you want a jacket?โ
โDo I fuck!โ
โLanguage, Michael,โ said Walter. โNo need for it.โ
Walter dragged Flanagan outside and put him in the back of the car. Karen carefully closed and locked the house up and joined them.
โWhat about my key?โ
โAll in good time. Letโs get back to the nick.โ
IN THE POLICE STATION Karen turned on the recorder and said, โInterview with Michael Flanagan starting at 7.26pm,โ and she added the date, โI am Sergeant Karen Greenwood, also present is Inspector Walter Darriteau.โ
โIโm starving, I want something to eat, I missed my dinner.โ
โWeโll get something organised for you,โ said Walter.
โAnd I want to see a solicitor.โ
โDo you have a solicitor?โ
โNo, I shouldnโt need one, itโs only because of you....โ
โDo you want me to get the Duty Solicitor?โ said Walter.
Flanagan nodded and said, โI do, and I am not saying anything at all until he, or she, is right here beside me.โ
โCould be a long night,โ said Karen.
โSuits me, sister, I couldnโt go out anyway, so itโs your social life thatโs suffering, not mine.โ
He had a point there, and he knew it, as Karen momentarily thought of David Baker, and wondered where he was, and what he was doing, and what he was thinking.
โHow well did you know Belinda Cooper?โ asked Walter.
โOh no, you are not getting me on that, sliding questions in when you think I havenโt noticed.โ
โHow well?โ asked Karen.
โSolicitor? Chop chop!โ
Walter went to the door and peered out. Gibbons was at his desk, staring at his phone.
โSee if you
