βCrack on,β she said, and they got up and returned to work.
Before they returned to the interview room, Walter said, βStrange we never found anything about the fifth man.β
βAh,β said Karen.
βWhat do you mean βahβ?β
Karen bit her lip and said, βI have IDβd the fifth man.β
βHave you now? And when did you do that?β
βYesterday, I think it was, but with everything else going on, and then the discovery of Flanaganβs fingerprint, it didnβt seem so important, or relevant,β which was not quite the truth, and they both knew that.
βWould you like to acquaint me with this new intel?β
But before she could answer, he called Gibbons over.
βGo and tell the Duty Sol there will be no more questioning of Michael Flanagan today until later this afternoon, say itβs due to fresh information that has just come to hand. She can stand down; weβll keep her informed, and get Flanagan back to the cells.β
Gibbons pulled an impressed face and said, βSure Guv,β and beetled off to give the impressive Ms Drake the news.
Walter turned back to Karen. His face said everything: Tell all.
She didnβt need prompting.
βHis nameβs David Baker, heβs thirty-six, and works for a grain merchant. Never been in any kind of trouble.β
βDoes he fit the description of the man Corla described?β
βHe does.β
βWhat vaguely, exactly, what?β
βPretty much on the nail.β
βAnd you didnβt think to tell me?β
βItβs a little bit more complicated than that, Guv.β
βOh, in what way?β
βHeβs err, kind of, my bloke.β
βWhat! Your boyfriend?β
Karen nodded.
βGeez! And does βyour blokeβ, as you describe him, have a rock solid alibi for both killings?β
Karen shook her head, and said, βNot that heβs telling me.β
βHave you discussed the case with him?β
βNo, not at all.β
βForgive me, Karen, but I find that hard to believe.β
βI know it looks odd, Guv, but itβs the truth.β
βMrs West will have to be told. It doesnβt look good, does it?β
βI know that, Guv, but once the fingerprint thing came up it really didnβt seem so important.β
βYou know the score KG, ALL intel is important, because it builds up the bigger picture.β
Gibbons came back and shared a look with Walter who said, βHow was she?β
βMiffed! She said that both she and her client were being unnecessarily messed around.β
Walter pulled a face.
βThatβs the least of my worries.β
He turned back to Karen and said, βIβll need to interview this Mr Baker. Where can I find him?β
Karen gave him the phone numbers and an address.
βYouβll not be able to attend, you know that?β
βSure, Guv.β
βIn fact you may need to be taken off the case. Iβll check that out with Mrs West.β
βI thought that might happen.β
βYou thought that would be the case, didnβt you?β
βIt occurred to me, Guv, of course it did, I just wanted to get to the bottom of it first, I was bending the rules a little, Iβll admit, just as you did with the....β
βOh no! Donβt you dare compare my off the wall ID parade plan with your withholding information, it wonβt wash!β
βSorry, Guv, but surely itβs all irrelevant now that we have concrete proof on Flanagan?β
βThere are numerous holes in that argument, donβt you think? Why didnβt Corla ID him, for one, how did he break his tag time, for two, you still havenβt found any evidence he is tag tampering, and how and where did he meet Belinda Cooper, for three? And thatβs just for starters. Hardly watertight, is it?β
βHe was in her bedroom.β
βMaybe, but nothing else fits.β
Gibbons phone rang.
They heard him say, βJust a second, Mrs Revelation.β
How she must have been miffed by everyone calling her βMrsβ.
βYes, heβs here, just a sec, Iβll put him on.β
Gibbons grimaced and gawped at Walter.
βItβs Corla and she sounds....β
βSounds what?β
βShe sounds kind of frightened, Guv.β
Walter grabbed the phone and said, βCorla, whatβs up?β
βIβve seen him!β
βYouβve seen who?β
βThe murderer, of course, or at least the man who came out of Belindaβs house. Iβve seen him twice.β
βWhere? When?β
βFirst thing this morning when I went for the papers, I always go out early if I can, stretch the legs, that kind of thing. He was across the road, but ducked out of sight when I looked at him.β
βAnd the second time?β
βA few seconds ago, crossing the square.β
βWhich square?β
βThe one outside Portobello Towers.β
βWhat are you doing there?β
βI was so unsettled when I saw him earlier that I had to get away from the house, so I decided to come and stay here with my nieces. They live in number 35. Safety in numbers, and all that.β
βYou mean Janice and Chantelle are your nieces?β
βYes, how do you know them? They havenβt been naughty, have they?β
βNo, nothing like that, they were helping me with something else.β
βThatβs a relief. Please come over, Walter. Iβm so frightened. Iβm certain heβs coming here to kill me. Iβm the only witness, you see, without me heβll get away scot-free. Itβs me he wants.β
βSure. Weβll come straight away.β
βPlease hurry, and bring plenty of puff.β
βPuff?β
βYeah, the damned lifts are off again.β
βBugger! Stay in the flat, lock the doors, and donβt go out. Weβre on our way.β
βThanks Walter. Youβre a love.β
He set the phone down.
Karen, Jenny, Gibbons and Nick had all gravitated to his desk.
βWhereβs Hector?β
βHeβs gone to see Pat the snout. Had some intel for us, apparently,β said Gibbons.
βOkay, Nick you stay here and man the phones. When Hector checks in, tell him to get down to Portobello Towers, PDQ, number 35. Jenny and Gibbons, get yourself a car and get over there and wait for us outside.β
Gibbons nodded. Jenny said, βGot it.β
Karen slipped on her jacket and headed for the lift to grab a car.
βNick,β said Walter. βYou bring Mrs West up to speed. Tell her Corla Revelation says she has just seen the prime suspect outside her nieceβs flat. She says heβs there to kill her.β
βSure, Guv. But if the suspect is there, whatβs Flanagan doing in the cells?β
βGood question! Let him stew for a few hours. Weβll keep you posted.β
βAnd what about the Duty Sol?β
βHumour her, Iβm sure youβre capable of that.β
Nicky grinned, βHappy to.β
Two minutes later
