Michael brought the tension to a head.
βYo,β he said. βEverybody. Shut. The. Fuck. Up. Especially you, Aldo. Hey, Joosten, how long to the drop?β
Col. Joosten waited for permission from Valentin.
βFour minutes, fifty seconds.β
βThanks.β Michael pushed Aldo against the bulkhead. βThatβs about how long you got to live. If you donβt agree to this plan, theyβre gonna kill you because otherwise, youβre a security risk. If a scout ship drops in close to the planet, you could tell them where you are.β He tapped Aldoβs temple above the stream amp. βAnd if these dudes donβt waste you, the Jewels will because youβre a Chancellor, and they wonβt care if you didnβt have a hand in creating the Berserkers. Aldo, this is gonna be a fucking turkey shoot. I want you safe, and we need your help. Itβs a fair bargain. Best I can manage on the fly, anyway.β
Michael stepped back and waited for a response. He understood Aldoβs resentment. In the old manβs place, Michael might respond no differently. Aldo spoke up.
βCan you guarantee the Berserkers will be fried?β
βIβll do James myself. If we fight the hybrids, the Jewels will see what side we chose. Theyβll dust those motherfuckers. But these kids,β he pointed to the soldiers in still-seats, βdeserve a chance. Sam and I, weβre like them. I promise, if we win this, Salvation will never pose a threat to the Chancellory again.β He caught Valentinβs raised eyebrow but continued undaunted. βBetter yet, youβll stick it to the Admiralty. Youβll have the last damn word about Hiebimini. Sorry. Aeterna. New name, apparently.β
Aldo chuckled. βTheyβll have the last word at my execution.β
βNo. Itβll never go there. Aldo, Iβll have your back when itβs over if youβll have ours today.β
After a quiet moment, Aldo said, βTwo conditions. One, when I give an order, I expect their navigator to follow it. Two, after I leave this ship, I never see Valentin Bouchet again.β
Michael pivoted for Valentinβs response. The younger brother found the conditions amusing but consented with a caveat.
βI want you patched into Admiral Kane at all times,β he told Aldo. βLive feed. If you exceed your bounds, heβll shut you down.β
βAnd your navigator will probably shoot me. Fair enough.β
Michael backed off. βAnd, drumroll please. We have a deal! Pretty sure Iβm not gonna ask you to shake on this.β
Valentin turned his back and consulted with Joosten. They threw open holocubes and discussed logistics as Joosten brought the Scramjet in for a landing. Aldo whispered to Michael.
βThose children are very small.β
βYeah, covered that ground already. But theyβre devoted and trained, and this armor? Guard flash pegs wonβt make a dent.β
βMichael, standing with these terrorists means no way back.β
He shrugged. βI left Earth on a one-way street. It ends here.β
The Scramjet did not land, but the bulkhead pixelated. The ship was hovering at the edge of the river, above muddy soil.
βThe drop,β Valentin said. βWait for Cabriseβs ship then follow the guide. Youβre five hundred meters from the eastern edge of JaRa.β
Michael added a wrinkle. He pointed to the rifter he rode onboard earlier. βIf you donβt mind, I think she might come in handy. Smooth, quiet ride, if you get my speed.β
Valentin assented. Michael rode it out the cargo hold with Aldo holding on from behind. The Scramjet curled south then west to the cityβs industrial sector. Michael steered them into the tall reeds and found solid ground. They hopped off and waited. Michael retracted his helmet and took in the scenery.
βSorry you wonβt have a chance to see their city, Aldo. Valentin showed me the layout. Itβs fucking crazy. He says the Jewels grew it out of the planet. It was waiting when they arrived here. You believe that shit?β
βEh. Why not? Itβs no less improbable than anything else Iβve seen.β
Michael took out his pipe. βA serious question, Aldo. What would you think about staying here afterward?β
Aldo coughed at Michaelβs ensuing cloud of poltash smoke.
βThat is not a serious question.β
βSure, it is. You said your first love was exobiology. Can you think of a better planet to study? Youβll have first dibs.β
βI thought you said these Jewels would kill someone like me?β
βA technicality. We can sort out the details, Iβm sure.β
Aldo leaned against the rifter and rubbed his quad. Michael enjoyed what he assumed to be his last smoke before battle. However, he choked on a puff when he heard the reeds rustling in an unnatural way. He tapped off his pipe, grabbed a blast rifle and told Aldo to get down. He swung about, looking for a target. The rustling seemed to come from every direction, though the breeze was nonexistent.
βThe hell?β
One target approached. Man or woman, Michael couldnβt tell. A gray cloak shadowed the visitor. Michael took an aggressive stand and aimed.
βHalt right there, or I put you down.β
The stranger stopped, appeared to look in either direction, which Michael thought was a prelude to the asshole opening fire. Instead, he heard something mind-boggling.
βHello, Michael. Iβm pleased you came so far. Youβre the last one.β
βWait, what? Drop the hood and show me your hands.β
The bedraggled features and knotted gray hair made Aldo Cabrise seem young and sprightly.
βI thought of waiting for you at the edge of the city,β the stranger said. βBut they insisted I would be of more use here.β He turned to Aldo. βThey were right. Theyβre always right.β He dropped his arms and continued forward.
βDo you know this man?β Aldo asked Michael.
βNot as well as you, Admiral Aldo Cabrise.β
Aldo took two steps closer, eyeing the stranger with incredulity. The man in gray pivoted to Michael.
βHeβll figure it
