Easton nods as he narrows his eyes before finishing off the rest of his scotch. I almost think he’s going to get up and walk away, so it surprises me when he reaches his hand out.
My eyebrows lift as I stare at him, and then I shake his hand.
“It’ll take me a while to get used to this, and if you ever hurt Allyson, I’ll be the last person you see before you take your last breath.” His hand grips mine, and I swallow down my complaint.
“We’ve got miles of land in Everton, where no one will find your body.” Then, he has the balls to smirk. Motherfucker.
“Good to know my best friend wants me dead,” I deadpan, finishing off my own drink.
“If you hurt her,” he lifts a finger as if correcting me.
“Honestly, Easton, where does this leave us?” I feel like a girl asking, but I don’t want this to cause a strain on our friendship.
“I’m not sure. I want to believe you’ll do right by her, but I’ve witnessed your relationships for too long to question if you’re capable of settling down.”
That’s a low blow, but I can’t argue it. “So fifteen years of friendship down the drain?” I shake my head in disbelief.
“No, but she’s my blood.”
“And all those years of saying I was your brother was bullshit? If the tables were turned, I’d give you the benefit of the doubt despite your past choices. I trust you enough to believe you when you tell me you’re sure about something. I guess you don’t trust me when it comes to Allyson.” I stand and drop two twenties on the bar.
“You may be that child’s uncle, but I’m the father.” With that, I walk out of the bar, frustrated as hell.
It isn’t fair to think I don’t have what it takes to be a good father and a partner, especially after putting my vulnerability on display the way I did. Allyson, she’s different. Not in a cliché way, but she’s different for me. She brings something out in me that no one ever has.
Screw this. I make a few calls and head back to my apartment. I’m going to see my girl. Hell, I’m going to go make her my girl.

I jumped on a late-night flight yesterday and headed straight for Ally’s apartment when I landed at the airport. I called my clients after my conversation with Easton and told them I had to travel. If they want to replace me, then I’ll give them the names of a couple people I trust to do as good a job as I do. Thankfully, they were all understanding, Jim included. I do most of their work remotely anyway.
A few seconds after I buzz Allyson’s apartment, the front door opens. I make my way to the elevator, my eyebrows bunching in confusion. She didn’t even ask who it was; she simply let me in.
I knock on Ally’s door, excited and anxious to see her. My conversation with Easton left a sour taste in my mouth, and I’m determined to prove I’m worthy of Allyson. I won’t lose both my best friend and the girl.
The door opens, and Allyson’s eyes widen as her mouth drops open.
“Do you just let anyone up here without asking?” I cross my arms over my chest and smirk.
“What are you doing here? I thought it was my lunch order.” Her hand comes up to cover her mouth, and her eyes soften as she looks at me.
I’m the one that can’t tear my eyes away from her. She could’ve sent me a million pictures, but nothing would’ve prepared me for the emotions I’d feel when I actually saw her. She has the perfect round bump and there’s no denying she’s pregnant.
I drop to my knees and lift her shirt, dropping a kiss on her stomach. When I look up at her, I notice a few stray tears. I kiss her stomach one more time before standing and wiping her tears again.
“I missed you. You look stunning.” I grab the back of her neck and slam my mouth against hers in an urgent kiss. Our tongues swipe together, and I kick the door closed. My hands run down her swollen stomach, lifting her shirt and sneaking my hand under it.
“You’re freezing.” She shivers, wrapping her arms around my body. Pride swims inside of me at the way she holds me, the way she looks at me.
“You look… So damn beautiful. Pictures don’t do you justice, Kiwi.” I kiss up her neck to her jaw. When I hear her moans, I smile against her skin. Her flowery scent hits me with a feeling of home, and I desperately need to hold on to that.
“Need you now,” I say between peppering kisses across her collar bone.
She takes off her shirt without a second thought, and I lean back, staring at her. “I can’t believe I missed seeing this grow.” I rub her belly and drop a kiss on the swell of her breasts. Nothing is sexier than her in simple cotton underwear that remains true to herself.
“I’m so fucking hard for you.”
I hiss when she palms my erection over my joggers.
“Hard as Steele,” she smiles, using the pun I told her months ago.
“All for you, baby.”
“Fuck,” she moans, her hand sneaking into my pants. “Room, now.” Her throaty, desperate words make my cock even harder. I grip her ass and lift her, her legs coming around my waist.
Seeing her glow, needing me as much as I need her, it makes me a wild man. I become primal, instinct taking over as I lay her on the bed and kiss up her throat until my lips find hers. Ally’s hands go to the back of my head, tugging my hair, and arching her body up to mine. She strokes her tongue along mine, her kiss becoming wild and lighting
