Emmeline picked up the basket and held it in front of her. โI should be going.โ
โWould you care for a piece of bread before you leave?โ
Before she could reply, Mrs. Winters walked in, her eyes flashing with relief when they landed on Emmeline. โThere you are,โ she said with labored breath. โYour husband has arrived and has requested to speak to you in the drawing room.โ
โMy husband?โ Emmeline repeated back in surprise.
The housekeeper bobbed her head. โYes, milady.โ
Forcing a smile to her lips, she hoped it didnโt appear too strained. โHow fortunate for me,โ she said. โI shall go greet him.โ
Emmeline exited the kitchen and walked up the servantโs stairs. Once she arrived on the main level, she hurried towards the mirror that hung in the entry hall. She smoothed back her blonde hair and tried to appear presentable.
Gathering her courage, she stepped into the drawing room. Her breath hitched at the mere sight of Oliver. He was standing by the window, looking out over the expansive lawn. He was dressed in a grey riding jacket, dark trousers, and black Hessian boots.
โGood morning, Husband,โ she greeted, hoping her words sounded cordial enough.
Oliver turned to face her, and a smile played on his lips. โSo, this is Lockhart Manor.โ
โIt is.โ
โFrom what I have seen, it is lovely,โ he commented.
โI agree,โ she said. โWould you care for me to give you a tour?โ
โI would greatly enjoy that but, first, I wanted to speak to you about something.โ
Emmeline cocked her head. โWhat would you care to discuss?โ
Oliver took a step closer to her and stopped. He looked entirely unsure of himself, which was in stark contrast to his usual demeanor. โI would like to apologize for not being there when you departed from Hawthorne House.โ
โYou donโt have to explain yourself, not to me.โ
โBut I want to.โ
Emmeline gave him an expectant look. โProceed, then.โ
โI must admit that I took the news that you were departing from Hawthorne House rather poorly.โ
โWhy is that?โ
โI didnโt want you to leave.โ
โFrankly, I didnโt think my absence would be missed,โ she admitted, lowering her gaze.
Oliver appeared displeased by her response. โHow could you even think that?โ He took a step closer to her. โRegardless of what transpired between us in the past, our destinies are still intertwined.โ
โI understand.โ
He glanced down at the basket in her hand. โDid I arrive at an inopportune time?โ
โNot at all.โ She held the basket up. โI had intended to deliver a basket to a widow who lives a short distance away.โ
โWould you care for me to accompany you?โ
A genuine smile came to her face. โI would like that very much.โ
Oliver reached for her gloved hand and brought it up to his lips. โI would be remiss if I failed to mention that you look especially beautiful this morning.โ
โYou are too kind,โ she replied. โI must look like a fright, since I only just arrived home from my morning ride.โ
โYou are being much too hard on yourself,โ he said as he placed her hand into the crook of his arm.
โIโm afraid that is generally true.โ
โIt is a shame that we are our own worst critics,โ Oliver said as he led her out of the drawing room.
Grubbs met them at the door and asked, โWould you care for me to request the carriage to be brought up front for your errand?โ
โThat wonโt be necessary,โ she replied. โLord Oliver and I shall walk to Mrs. Thompsonโs cottage.โ
Grubbs tipped his head as he opened the door wide. โYes, milady.โ
As they stepped onto the gravel courtyard, Oliver asked, โHow are you faring?โ
โI am well,โ she replied.
โI am happy to hear that.โ
Emmeline glanced over at him. โMay I ask how you are faring?โ
His jaw clenched as he replied, โI am well.โ
โYou donโt seem well,โ she boldly remarked.
Oliver looked over at her in surprise. โAnd why do you say that?โ
โYou appear out of sorts.โ
โIt might have something to do with my staying at a coaching inn last night,โ he admitted. โI left Town later than I intended and I arrived in Whitstable at a late hour.โ
โYou should have come straightaway to Lockhart Manor. I am sure someone would have been up to receive you.โ
He shook his head. โI thought it was best to stay at the coaching inn and arrive early this morning.โ
โI have never rented a room at a coaching inn before.โ
Oliver chuckled. โYou are not missing much,โ he said. โThe mattresses have straw in them, and the fleas are horrendous.โ
โThat sounds awful.โ
โIโm afraid I havenโt even gotten to the worst part,โ he joked. โI am not entirely sure what meat was in my soup last night.โ
They continued walking down the dirt road, and Emmelineโs eyes roamed the rolling hills in the distance.
โYou seem happy here,โ Oliver commented.
โI am,โ she admitted.
โWill you be returning to Hawthorne House, then?โ Oliver asked, his words hesitant.
Bringing her gaze back to meet his, she replied, โI have every intention to.โ
Oliver nodded. โI must admit that pleases me.โ
โDid you doubt that I would?โ
He grew silent for a moment, then said, โIโm afraid our previous conversation was handled very poorly on my part.โ
โIt matters not.โ She had no desire to discuss it, so she asked, โDo you intend to stay long at Lockhart Manor?โ
Oliver grinned. โDo you already tire of my presence?โ
โHeavens, no,โ she rushed out. โYou are welcome to stay as long as you are able, especially since it belongs to you.โ
โI am only teasing you, Emme.โ
โI should have known,โ she muttered.
โFrankly, I plan to stay until I can convince you to return to Town.โ
โI see.โ
Oliver glanced curiously at her. โDo you not wish to return home?โ
โI do, butโฆโ Her voice trailed off as she tried to think of the right words to say. โI know this may sound odd, but I feel as if I am home at Lockhart Manor.โ
โThat is disconcerting, because our home is in London. At Hawthorne House,โ Oliver said, his voice taking on a slight edge.
โI am well aware of that, and I apologize
