such deep religious conviction,โ€ Mrs. Davies remarked.

Emmeline picked up the basket and held it in front of her. โ€œI should be going.โ€

โ€œWould you care for a piece of bread before you leave?โ€

Before she could reply, Mrs. Winters walked in, her eyes flashing with relief when they landed on Emmeline. โ€œThere you are,โ€ she said with labored breath. โ€œYour husband has arrived and has requested to speak to you in the drawing room.โ€

โ€œMy husband?โ€ Emmeline repeated back in surprise.

The housekeeper bobbed her head. โ€œYes, milady.โ€

Forcing a smile to her lips, she hoped it didnโ€™t appear too strained. โ€œHow fortunate for me,โ€ she said. โ€œI shall go greet him.โ€

Emmeline exited the kitchen and walked up the servantโ€™s stairs. Once she arrived on the main level, she hurried towards the mirror that hung in the entry hall. She smoothed back her blonde hair and tried to appear presentable.

Gathering her courage, she stepped into the drawing room. Her breath hitched at the mere sight of Oliver. He was standing by the window, looking out over the expansive lawn. He was dressed in a grey riding jacket, dark trousers, and black Hessian boots.

โ€œGood morning, Husband,โ€ she greeted, hoping her words sounded cordial enough.

Oliver turned to face her, and a smile played on his lips. โ€œSo, this is Lockhart Manor.โ€

โ€œIt is.โ€

โ€œFrom what I have seen, it is lovely,โ€ he commented.

โ€œI agree,โ€ she said. โ€œWould you care for me to give you a tour?โ€

โ€œI would greatly enjoy that but, first, I wanted to speak to you about something.โ€

Emmeline cocked her head. โ€œWhat would you care to discuss?โ€

Oliver took a step closer to her and stopped. He looked entirely unsure of himself, which was in stark contrast to his usual demeanor. โ€œI would like to apologize for not being there when you departed from Hawthorne House.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to explain yourself, not to me.โ€

โ€œBut I want to.โ€

Emmeline gave him an expectant look. โ€œProceed, then.โ€

โ€œI must admit that I took the news that you were departing from Hawthorne House rather poorly.โ€

โ€œWhy is that?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want you to leave.โ€

โ€œFrankly, I didnโ€™t think my absence would be missed,โ€ she admitted, lowering her gaze.

Oliver appeared displeased by her response. โ€œHow could you even think that?โ€ He took a step closer to her. โ€œRegardless of what transpired between us in the past, our destinies are still intertwined.โ€

โ€œI understand.โ€

He glanced down at the basket in her hand. โ€œDid I arrive at an inopportune time?โ€

โ€œNot at all.โ€ She held the basket up. โ€œI had intended to deliver a basket to a widow who lives a short distance away.โ€

โ€œWould you care for me to accompany you?โ€

A genuine smile came to her face. โ€œI would like that very much.โ€

Oliver reached for her gloved hand and brought it up to his lips. โ€œI would be remiss if I failed to mention that you look especially beautiful this morning.โ€

โ€œYou are too kind,โ€ she replied. โ€œI must look like a fright, since I only just arrived home from my morning ride.โ€

โ€œYou are being much too hard on yourself,โ€ he said as he placed her hand into the crook of his arm.

โ€œIโ€™m afraid that is generally true.โ€

โ€œIt is a shame that we are our own worst critics,โ€ Oliver said as he led her out of the drawing room.

Grubbs met them at the door and asked, โ€œWould you care for me to request the carriage to be brought up front for your errand?โ€

โ€œThat wonโ€™t be necessary,โ€ she replied. โ€œLord Oliver and I shall walk to Mrs. Thompsonโ€™s cottage.โ€

Grubbs tipped his head as he opened the door wide. โ€œYes, milady.โ€

As they stepped onto the gravel courtyard, Oliver asked, โ€œHow are you faring?โ€

โ€œI am well,โ€ she replied.

โ€œI am happy to hear that.โ€

Emmeline glanced over at him. โ€œMay I ask how you are faring?โ€

His jaw clenched as he replied, โ€œI am well.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t seem well,โ€ she boldly remarked.

Oliver looked over at her in surprise. โ€œAnd why do you say that?โ€

โ€œYou appear out of sorts.โ€

โ€œIt might have something to do with my staying at a coaching inn last night,โ€ he admitted. โ€œI left Town later than I intended and I arrived in Whitstable at a late hour.โ€

โ€œYou should have come straightaway to Lockhart Manor. I am sure someone would have been up to receive you.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œI thought it was best to stay at the coaching inn and arrive early this morning.โ€

โ€œI have never rented a room at a coaching inn before.โ€

Oliver chuckled. โ€œYou are not missing much,โ€ he said. โ€œThe mattresses have straw in them, and the fleas are horrendous.โ€

โ€œThat sounds awful.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid I havenโ€™t even gotten to the worst part,โ€ he joked. โ€œI am not entirely sure what meat was in my soup last night.โ€

They continued walking down the dirt road, and Emmelineโ€™s eyes roamed the rolling hills in the distance.

โ€œYou seem happy here,โ€ Oliver commented.

โ€œI am,โ€ she admitted.

โ€œWill you be returning to Hawthorne House, then?โ€ Oliver asked, his words hesitant.

Bringing her gaze back to meet his, she replied, โ€œI have every intention to.โ€

Oliver nodded. โ€œI must admit that pleases me.โ€

โ€œDid you doubt that I would?โ€

He grew silent for a moment, then said, โ€œIโ€™m afraid our previous conversation was handled very poorly on my part.โ€

โ€œIt matters not.โ€ She had no desire to discuss it, so she asked, โ€œDo you intend to stay long at Lockhart Manor?โ€

Oliver grinned. โ€œDo you already tire of my presence?โ€

โ€œHeavens, no,โ€ she rushed out. โ€œYou are welcome to stay as long as you are able, especially since it belongs to you.โ€

โ€œI am only teasing you, Emme.โ€

โ€œI should have known,โ€ she muttered.

โ€œFrankly, I plan to stay until I can convince you to return to Town.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

Oliver glanced curiously at her. โ€œDo you not wish to return home?โ€

โ€œI do, butโ€ฆโ€ Her voice trailed off as she tried to think of the right words to say. โ€œI know this may sound odd, but I feel as if I am home at Lockhart Manor.โ€

โ€œThat is disconcerting, because our home is in London. At Hawthorne House,โ€ Oliver said, his voice taking on a slight edge.

โ€œI am well aware of that, and I apologize
