do me the honor of marrying me?โ€

She paused. โ€œI want to say yes.โ€

โ€œThen say it,โ€ he pressed.

Her eyes filled with tears as she watched him. โ€œWhat about Lady Emma?โ€

โ€œI spoke to her yesterday and ended things with her,โ€ he replied.

โ€œAnd Lady Isabella?โ€

โ€œI informed my father that I only intended to marry you,โ€ he said, then hesitated, โ€œassuming you will have me.โ€

โ€œWhat if you change your mind?โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€ He tightened his hold on her hand. โ€œYou are my best friend, and I never intend to let you go.โ€

โ€œMartinโ€”โ€ she started.

โ€œI need to say something,โ€ he said. โ€œJust one more thing.โ€

โ€œWhich is?โ€

His voice became hoarse, and his eyes glistened with unshed tears. โ€œI am absolutely, maddeningly, irrevocably in love with you, Hannah. You must believe me.โ€

โ€œI do, butโ€”โ€

โ€œThen please, marry me,โ€ he said, interrupting her again. โ€œI promise I will spend the rest of my days ensuring that you never regret your decision.โ€

Hannah felt a smile spread across her face. She felt as though her heart might burst from happiness. โ€œYes, I will marry you.โ€

Martinโ€™s lips curled into a boyish grin. โ€œYou have no idea how happy you have made me, my dear.โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t believe you are here with me.โ€

He kept hold of her hand as he rose. โ€œThere is no place that I would rather be.โ€ He took a step closer. โ€œMay I kiss you now?โ€

โ€œIf I say yes, will you promptly tell me it was a mistake?โ€ she asked cheekily.

He chuckled. โ€œI deserved that.โ€

Hannah went on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his. She could feel him smiling against her lips.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ she asked, leaning back.

โ€œI like the fact that you kissed me.โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€ she asked.

He nodded. โ€œBut it was much too short for my taste.โ€ He leaned closer and pressed his mouth to hers, softly but firmly, then moved one arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. With his touch, she felt all the barriers around her heart begin to fall away, making it whole once more.

The sound of someone loudly clearing their throat caused her to jump away from Martin. She turned around and saw the duke watching them sternly.

โ€œI daresay that is enough of that,โ€ Edmund ordered. โ€œI do hope you two are engaged, or else I will have no choice but to challenge Lord Egleton to a duel.โ€

Martin gave her a private smile. โ€œHannah did accept my offer of marriage, but only after I groveled a little.โ€

โ€œExcellent,โ€ the duke replied, his lips twitching. โ€œI knew you were a smart man.โ€

Amelia rushed over to Hannah and embraced her. โ€œI am so happy for you.โ€ She leaned back and looked over at Martin. โ€œFor both of you.โ€

Sybil interjected, โ€œDid your wish come true, Aunt Hannah?โ€

Hannan nodded. โ€œIt did,โ€ she replied. โ€œIt most definitely did.โ€

โ€œI knew it would,โ€ Sybil said, smiling up at her.

Turning her attention towards Martin, Hannah admitted, โ€œI had my doubts, but I am so pleased that I was wrong.โ€

Martin reached for her hand, then said, โ€œYou will never have to question my feelings for you ever again. I promise you that.โ€

Hannah tightened her hold on his hand. โ€œIf I am dreaming, I truly hope that I never wake up.โ€

โ€œThis is very real, my love,โ€ Martin replied, smiling, โ€œand we will never be apart from this day forth.โ€

โ€œThat sounds perfect,โ€ she breathed as she leaned in to kiss him.

Epilogue

Six years later

The sun had already set as Martin sat in his study and reviewed the ledgers. It was a task that he had come to enjoy over the years, as heโ€™d discovered that he had developed a real knack for it. He knew that one day he would become the Marquess of Darby, and these properties and investments would all belong to him. That thought was both sobering and exciting at the same time.

He leaned back in his chair and realized how truly blessed he was. The estates were prospering, and they had nearly doubled their profits this past year. But the thing that brought him the most joy was his family. His love for Hannah only continued to grow, and heโ€™d never imagined that someone could be in possession of such great happiness. Every morning, he woke up grateful that she had agreed to become his wife.

His five-year-old daughterโ€™s voice drew his attention. โ€œFather!โ€ Alice shouted as she ran into the room. โ€œI have to go to bed now.โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€

Alice bobbed her head enthusiastically as she came to a stop next to him. โ€œI do,โ€ she replied. โ€œMother said so.โ€

โ€œIf Mother said so, then it must be right.โ€ He held out his arms. โ€œI will need a hug before you head off to the nursery.โ€

As she stepped into his arms, he picked her up and placed her on his lap. โ€œHave you had a pleasant day today?โ€

โ€œI have.โ€

โ€œI am glad to hear that,โ€ he said. โ€œWhat occupied your time today?โ€

Alice made a face. โ€œMother made me practice the pianoforte,โ€ she informed him. โ€œIโ€™m awful at it.โ€

โ€œYou must be patient with yourself, especially since you only just started playing.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard, though.โ€

โ€œAnything worth doing usually is,โ€ Martin counseled as he admired her blonde curls. They were so similar to Hannahโ€™s.

Alice shifted in his lap to meet his gaze. โ€œWill you take me riding tomorrow?โ€

Martin glanced over at all the ledgers on his desk. โ€œIโ€™m afraid I am unable to tomorrow. I have meetings that I must attend to, but perhaps another day.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all right,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ll have Grandfather take me on a ride.โ€

โ€œDo you enjoy spending time with your grandfather?โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ she responded. โ€œHeโ€™s silly sometimes.โ€

Martinโ€™s brow lifted. โ€œHe is?โ€

Alice giggled. โ€œHe always tells me the funniest stories.โ€

โ€œNow I know you arenโ€™t telling me the truth.โ€ He smiled to let her know that he was teasing.

โ€œBut I am,โ€ she declared.

Hannahโ€™s voice came from the doorway. โ€œItโ€™s time for bed, Alice,โ€ she said, stepping further into the room. โ€œMartha is here to take you.โ€

Alice looked up at Martin with pleading eyes. โ€œWill you read me a story after Martha tucks me in?โ€

โ€œI
