“He can’t stay in this orphanage. The stroke means he doesn’t have the right. We’re raising geniuses, not vegetables like that.”
It wasn’t what they wanted; it was the principle behind effective development. The brothers were following the instructions of David Bork, the philanthropist behind the institution. It was an orphanage for geniuses, where smart children had the chance to reach their potential. When a child had the chance to graduate from the orphanage, the Shultz brothers were to help him or her with the very best of intentions. But if a child didn’t match up to their standards, they would be transferred out. In Anji Ganet’s case, he would be transferred to a special institution for the sick.
The Shultz brothers were sincerely grateful to Mr. Bork for founding the orphanage. They loved the children and wanted to help the sick, though they just didn’t have the opportunity in the latter case. A low-level financial clerk and an ex-soldier would never have been able to found a home for gifted children like that. It wasn’t just the money; the charter, the rules and principles for developing the children, and the code of ethics for the personnel working there had all been drawn up personally by David Bork.
There was just one person in all the world, who knew who David Bork really was. Only one person knew how lonely the child was, what bitter pain he’d been through, and how much work he had put into building his little corner of happiness. Only one person in that cruel world could understand Anji…and that person wasn’t nearby to help.
Anji Ganet was a broken-hearted child who hid his loneliness behind his school books, plastered a smile over his pain, and, even as he slowly died, was able to enjoy life. Only one person could understand him…and she wasn’t nearby to help. At the age of fourteen, Anji died, deeply lonely.
