Jasonβs breath, in and out, as he stood, naked in the center of the room.
But there was something behind his breath, behind the sound of the water dripping from the showerhead. Something familiar. Something humming. Samanthaβs eyes flew open with recognition and terror.
How!? she thought with despair. How did it find us!? How is this possible!? She saw a flash of movement in her peripheral and gritted her teeth, expecting the inevitable.
Visions of Jason on top of her, finishing what he had started, flashed across her mind. She was frozen in place. She couldnβt move. Maybe she didnβt really want to move. It would be easier to just let it happen.
But the baby!
This last thought made her bolt upright in the huge bed and let out a loud βNo!β as she looked over to where Jason was kneeling in the corner. This made him jump, and Samantha heard a loud thump! Confused, she grabbed for the switch on the lamp, found it, and pulled hard, nearly taking the thing apart. She gasped for air, rubbing her throat and staring at the corner where Jason sat, rubbing his head with one hand and holding the refrigerator cord in the other. He looked up at her, puzzled, then back at the cord in his hand, understanding immediately.
With guilty eyes and a morose look upon his face, he said, βIt was just the fridge, babe.β
