I was in the AU. I decided we were going to leave the country immediately. Alex and Chris called everyone from my flight crew, telling them that we were leaving sooner than expected and asking them to meet us at the airfield.

I called Dahiru’s comms to find out how he was doing, and he said the injury wasn’t too serious. He was being taken to the hospital to get stitched up, and he said he would get in touch with me once he got to the bottom of everything. I explained to him that we had to leave immediately, because I couldn’t risk being questioned by AU law enforcement or the media. By the time we arrived at the airfield, the entire crew was waiting on board the jet. Within a matter of minutes, we all boarded the plane and were up in the air, heading back to the UNEA.

Chapter 27

All Part of Alicante Grove

Where: Outside the Dominguez residence, North Walnut Grove, Miami

When: 1715 hours, Saturday, February 18, 2012

Currency: US dollar

When they got back to North Walnut Grove that evening, Raphael wanted to go over a few things with the boys before they got out of the car. He wanted to switch things up a bit, because he felt the operation left them a bit vulnerable security-wise. He thought it would be a good idea to be better prepared in case of unforeseen events.

“Guys, today was a good day, but I think we can do better. The first thing I want to suggest is that we need more muscle, at least a couple of extra guys covering security. One on lookout, one patrolling the area, and two at the door. Alex, Chris, you two will need to have guns as well, and don’t worry, I will get the guns. Also, we will no longer allow customers to come in the room, not even the guy buying the heroin. We will serve our customers by using our lookout, who will give us hand signals to indicate what the customers want, and we’ll figure out a way to get the drugs to the customers without them coming to the room. We’ll probably have to use one of the guys from the door. How does that sound?” Raphael asked.

“I completely agree, Uncle. In fact, I was thinking exactly the same thing. It felt like we were sitting ducks out there. I have an idea on how to get the drugs to the customers,” Eddie said.

“Oh, you do now, do you?” Raphael asked.

“Yeah. You know how at the bank drive-through, the tellers send money to customers through the tubes from inside the bank? Eddie said.

“Yes…” Raphael replied.

“Well, we can get some tubes like the ones from the banks. Tubes that can be clipped together to form one long tube. We can feed the tube through the bathroom wall. We’ll set up the tube at a height high enough that no one would notice it. With the tube at that height, the customers will not know that the drugs had been dropped from the tube directly above them. I saw a small air vent in the bathroom, and I’m sure all the rooms will have the same thing. All we have to do is unscrew and remove the air vent, and then feed the pipe through the hole the vent was in. Even if anyone notices it, it will just look like a drainpipe from the second floor. This would have been much easier if the bathrooms had windows. Anyway, we can get the lookout to tell the customers to collect the drugs from the back of the motel, which is where all the bathroom walls are facing.” Eddie said.

“Kid, this is crazy, you watch way too much television,” Raphael laughed. But that’s actually a good idea. I know these tubes you’re talking about; I’ll go to the hardware store this evening on my way home… wait, I need to take this call. Yes, yes… that’s not a problem, we’ll make that happen, see you tomorrow. It’s the guy who bought the kilo of heroin. He wants two more kilos tomorrow, and he also wants a kilo of cocaine,” Raphael said.

“Wow, that’s a lot, Uncle Raphael. Can we trust that guy not to rip us off?” Eddie asked.

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it. That’s the reason we’re getting more muscle and all of us will have guns. The guy won’t be meeting us at the motel tomorrow. I will tell him where to meet us at the last minute. Make sure it’s two bricks of heroin and an extra brick of cocaine tomorrow. We’ll bag the nickel, dime, and twenty bags of coke when we get to the motel. Just like we did today. Tomorrow morning I’ll be picking you up, using my friend’s ice-cream van—the police won’t suspect a thing.” Raphael said.

“No problem, Uncle Raphael, I will tell the cartel guys who watch my house that I’m going to hanging out with you. They won’t suspect anything either. To make it even less suspicious, Alex and Chris will have to meet us down the street, where the cartel won’t see us. I will put all the drugs in my backpack and wait for you to pick me up,” Eddie said.

“Sounds like a good plan, see you guys in the morning,” Raphael said.

The following morning, they arrived at the motel at Alicante Grove around 11a.m. Raphael had made all the arrangements the previous night. The four guys to cover security were already there waiting. The guy that was going to buy the two kilos of heroin and the brick of cocaine would be meeting Raphael’s crew later that day. Raphael was going to pick a neutral spot where it would be difficult for his contact to double-cross them. Raphael reached underneath the driver’s seat of the ice-cream truck and pulled out a brown canvas
