โThat would be great...except the bank robbers stole all our money and credit cards,โ he answered with a laugh.
Sophia cringed. โI forgot about that.โ
โWe could go find a nice park bench and start contacting credit card companies together,โ Evan offered.
It was probably the strangest first-date idea ever, but it sounded perfect. โLetโs do it.โ
Spring was Sophiaโs favorite time of year, especially in Charlotte. The smell of the flowering trees and the feel of the sun on her skin were rejuvenating.
โWhat did people do before the internet and before all the credit card companies had apps?โ Evan asked, slipping his phone into the inside pocket of his suit coat.
Sophia finished reporting the last of her stolen credit cards via the app on her phone. โThey had to call the number on the back of their card, I guess.โ
Evanโs brows furrowed. โHow do you call the number on the back of a card that was stolen?โ
โThatโs a very good question,โ Sophia replied with a chuckle.
โWell, Iโm glad that I was robbed today and not twenty years ago.โ He shook his head. โNot that I wanted to be robbed. I definitely didnโt want you to be robbed.โ
Sophiaโs heart beat a little faster as the memory reemerged. โThat was the scariest thing thatโs ever happened to me. I really donโt think I can sleep at home tonight. I am definitely begging my yaya for at least one night in her guest bed.โ
โYour yaya?โ
โItโs what people call their Greek grandmother.โ Sophia opened her photo app and pulled up her favorite picture of Yaya Iris. โMy yaya is eighty-one and the coolest woman I know. I owe my excellent fashion sense to her as well as my love of butterscotch candy.โ
The grin on Evanโs face grew wider. โYou love butterscotch candy? I donโt think I have ever met anyone under the age of eighty who loves butterscotch candy.โ
Sophia swatted his arm playfully. โYaya always has a bowl of all the classics on the sofa table in her living room. Sheโs got the peppermints, the cinnamon discs, the raspberry ones with the stuff that oozes out of the center and, of course, lemon drops.โ
โLemon drops. I love those. First theyโre sweet and then you get that sugar layer off and youโre hit by that sour.โ Evan pursed his lips like heโd eaten one.
He was adorable. Kind, funny and completely adorable. Somehow, on one of the worst days of her life, Sophia had managed to also meet the perfect guy.
