literally, arched her back! Actually ā€œgot her back upā€ā€”as the saying goes.

ā€œWell,ā€ replied Lorna, in as soothing a tone as she was able to muster, ā€œas I understand it, youā€™ve always kept himā€¦ on what youā€™d call, a pretty short leash! Againā€¦ as I understand itā€¦ he gives you, pretty much, his entire paycheck! Andā€¦ I guessā€¦ you simply give him, an allowance! One that is not notable, for itsā€¦ ah, for itsā€¦ for its generosity!ā€

ā€œWhatā€™s wrong with that? Iā€™m not well, yā€™know! I need that money! And heā€™s just aā€¦ just aā€¦ well, heā€™s just a little boy, yā€™know! Well, maybe not a little boy, anymore! Not exactly, anyway! But, heā€™sā€¦ heā€™s awful immatureā€¦ if you wanna know!ā€

ā€œImmature?ā€ scoffed Lorna. Her change of tone almost floored Sheila. ā€œListen, Mrs. Rutkowski,ā€ the waitress pressed on, ā€œmaybe, it could be, because youā€™ve kept aā€¦ kept a pretty tightā€¦ well, a pretty tight lid, on him! Because, maybe, youā€™ve kept a kind of a tightā€¦ a pretty tight rein . . . a really tight rein, on him? Could that be it?ā€

ā€œHeā€™s not . . . notā€¦ well, heā€™s not . . .ā€

ā€œMrs. Rutkowski? Has it ever occurred to you, that a young manā€¦ even one as docile a young man, as Jasonā€¦ that even he could, eventually, get tired of things? Of thingsā€¦ the way they are? The way they were? That it might be . . . that it just might beā€¦ that he, finally, just simply threw up his arms? Especially, if youā€™d had some sort of a flare-up, last week?ā€

ā€œThatā€™sā€¦ why, thatā€™s ridiculous!ā€

ā€œYou may think so! You undoubtedly do! But, I donā€™t! Listen to me! Iā€™ve watched your son! Watched himā€¦ over a pretty good period, of time! And I could see the spring being wound up! Being wound really tight! Really wound up! Really tight! As tightā€¦ as could be! If you ask me . . . which you havenā€™t . . . I donā€™t think that there was a helluva lot of room left! Not much more mainspring to tighten! Notā€¦ before the spring finally let loose! Before the thing eventually popped! Really popped! Explodedā€¦ all over the place!ā€

ā€œWell,ā€ groused the older woman, ā€œeven if that were true . . . where would he go? What would he do?ā€

ā€œItā€™s by me! But, though heā€™s been kind of kept down . . . for all his lifeā€¦ he is a smart kid! He just might have come upā€¦ with some kind of really-brilliant ā€˜escapeā€™ scheme! Something to set himself up! To establish himselfā€¦ somewhere else! It mightā€™ve been a spur of the moment deal! On the other hand, maybe it wasnā€™t! Like I saidā€¦ heā€™s a really smart kid! Look, this whole thing . . . his disappearing like thatā€¦ it could be the result, of something else! Somethingā€¦ that heā€™s been planning! Something that heā€™s had his finger on! Had his finger in! Has been working onā€¦ working out . . . for, possibly, a good long time! You never know!ā€

ā€œBut, what could he do? What can he do? What could he be planning? I mean, he doesnā€™tā€¦ he didnā€™tā€¦ he couldnā€™t have any damn money! None, yā€™know! Noneā€¦ to speak of, anyway!ā€

ā€œAh-HAH! There you are! I think you mightā€™ve just hit the nail! Hit itā€¦ right on the head! Right there! Like I said, heā€™s really a smart kid! Maybe, if he couldā€™ve put away, a dollar here . . . or, maybe, six-bits there . . . and done that, over a fairly long period of time???? Who knows . . . what his inventive little mind couldā€™ve come up with?ā€

ā€œWell, everyone around here seems to be blaming me . . . for his, you knowā€¦ for his silly-assed running away!ā€

ā€œNo oneā€™s blaming you, Mrs. Rutkowski!! Well, not actually blaming you! Not exactly! Listen, I donā€™t knowā€¦ I have no way of ever hearing . . . what Manny, or Mister Clarkson, mightā€™ve had to say to you. But, I think that the feeling around here . . . was that your son was awfully unhappy! Terribly unhappy! Unhappyā€¦ with his total, life!. Grossly unhappyā€¦ no matter whose fault it was! Or is! Or evenā€¦ if it was, maybe, no oneā€™s fault! I think we all feltā€¦ that Jason was a really troubled kid! Really troubled! We think thatā€¦ā€

ā€œI donā€™t know what Iā€™m going to do, Miss,ā€ interrupted Sheila. ā€œI need . . . i really needā€¦ that money!ā€

ā€œExcuse me, Mrs. Rutkowski. But, I think thatā€™s your problem! Right there! I donā€™t want to seem insensitive . . . well, maybe I do . . . but, if all you can see your son as, isā€¦ isā€¦ is just a piggybank, then thereā€™s your problem! Right there! If heā€™s just simply a certain amountā€¦ a certain amount, of money . . . then, I think that thereā€™s your answer! Right there!ā€

Sheila shot up from the stool! Then, she threw the remaining halfā€”of her, by-then-lukewarm, cup, of complimentary coffeeā€”into the face, of the totally-befuddled waitress! The gracious womanā€”whoā€™d unceasingly befriended her son!

The fuming Sheila boltedā€”toward the door! But, before hurrying out, onto Michigan Avenue, she turned and shoutedā€”at the top of her lungs, ā€œFuck you! Fuck you people! Fuck you all! Every damn one of you! Fuck you!ā€

Outside, the almost-frothing-at-the-mouth Sheila Rutkowski could not find a cab. She ā€œgimpedā€ her way westā€”along Michigan Avenue. Toward a convenience storeā€”and the bank of six payphones, outside the place. She found herself hoping that neither Manny nor Mr. Clarkson had noticed her unintended agilityā€”in reaching the door to the restaurant! Exiting the coffee shopā€”so quickly! Sheā€™d begun to limpā€”badlyā€”once sheā€™d regained presence of mind enough, to slip back ā€œinto roleā€! (As sheā€™d gotten further and further away, from the eatery, of course, sheā€™d returned to where her pace was considerably less gimpy!)

She fumbled in her purse for a quarterā€”and dialed up the cab company. The one which had plastered four colorful placardsā€”on the back, of the aluminum-framed group of phones.

It took about 15 minutesā€”for the taxi to get there. Sheilaā€”who had taken refuge, inside the storeā€”didnā€™t see the vehicle at first. But, once sheā€™d hurried to the waiting cab, she became concernedā€”once moreā€”that someone ā€œimportantā€ might have witnessed the unquestioned agility, that sheā€™d displayed, in getting from the store to the car.

Sheila directed the
