Appearing unaware of the snideness of her comment, the duke returned her smile. โI have buried four wives in my lifetime, which is why I decided I needed to marry someone much younger this time. That way I can ensure you will outlive me.โ
โHow wonderful,โ Emmeline muttered.
Her aunt cleared her throat and shot her a warning look. โWhat Emmeline is trying to convey is that she is very blessed to be your betrothed. Arenโt you?โ
โYes, so incredibly blessed,โ Emmeline said, her words sounding forced to her own ears.
The duke puffed his chest out in pride at her words, and she wondered if he could hear everything that she was saying. Perhaps he was going deaf in his old age.
โI knew we would suit admirably the moment I saw you,โ the duke remarked. โFurthermore, I still require an heir. My previous wives greatly disappointed me in that regard, especially my first wife. She was unable to have children.โ
Lady Taylor smiled at the duke. โYou do have lovely daughters, Your Grace.โ
โBah,โ he replied forcefully. โI donโt need any more daughters. I require a son. An heir.โ
Emmeline turned her attention towards the blue-papered walls and attempted to hide her growing agitation. The dukeโs only purpose for her was to produce a son, and quickly.
The dukeโs next words drew her attention back. โMy doctor will need to examine you before the wedding to ensure you can bear children.โ
โPardon?โ she asked, hoping sheโd misheard him.
โI canโt take the chance that you are barren,โ the duke said simply, โand I have been told it is a simple exam.โ
โLovely,โ she remarked dryly as a footman placed a blanket onto her lap. โI shall have something to look forward to.โ
โPer the contract, for every son you produce, you will be handsomely rewarded,โ the duke shared.
โAnd if I have a girl?โ
The duke frowned. โThen you shall be given nothing for your troubles.โ
โI see.โ
โDo you anticipate having a problem with bearing sons?โ the duke questioned.
โI donโt think it is something that I can control,โ she admitted.
The duke waved his hand dismissively in front of him. โYou need not to fret about that,โ he declared. โYou are still young and will be able to bear many children for me.โ
โMay I ask how old your daughters are?โ
The duke stared at her blankly. โI am not entirely sure. They are away at boarding school.โ
โYou donโt know the ages of your own children?โ she asked in disbelief.
โI donโt pay attention to such trivial details,โ the duke replied.
Emmeline kept her face expressionless as she questioned, โDo you at least know how many children you have?โ
The duke chuckled. โWhat a delight you are,โ he said. โYes, I have three daughters, but you donโt need to concern yourself with them until they are old enough for a Season. Then, you shall have the honor of introducing them into Society.โ
Emmeline leaned to the side as a footman placed a dessert plate in front of her. As she reached for her fork, she asked, โWhat hobbies do you enjoy, Your Grace?โ
โI enjoy dissected puzzles.โ
โAs do I,โ Emmeline replied. โI enjoy putting the map of Europe together.โ
The duke bobbed his head in approval. โI used to be an avid reader, but my eyes are not what they used to be. I shall require you to read to me in the evenings.โ
โMy niece would be happy to do that,โ Lady Taylor said enthusiastically. โShe loves reading and talking. Those are her two favorite things to do.โ
Emmeline stifled the groan that came to her lips. What an absurd thing to say, she thought.
โI do not enjoy useless chatter, mind you,โ the duke revealed. โThere is no place for it in my home.โ
Lady Taylor bobbed her head. โEmmeline has practically perfected the art of polite conversation. Havenโt you, dear?โ
โI have,โ Emmeline replied. โI do so love talking about the weather, the state of the gardens, and my many accomplishments.โ
โThat pleases me immensely to hear,โ the duke said. โMy previous wives expected me to converse with them over dinner.โ
โHow horrifying,โ Emmeline declared, bringing a hand up to her chest to feign outrage.
โI see we share a similar mindset,โ the duke remarked. โGenerally, I prefer to retreat to my own thoughts when I eat.โ
Emmeline started eating the tart that was placed before her and wondered how she was going to get herself out of this unfortunate situation. She couldnโt marry this man, no matter that he was a duke.
โDo you ride, Miss Lockhart?โ the duke asked.
โI do.โ
โThen we shall have to acquire you a horse.โ
โThat isnโt necessary,โ Emmeline revealed as she placed her fork on the plate. โI already own a horse.โ
โYou must be an accomplished rider then.โ
She nodded. โI am.โ
โThat is a fine pastime for a young woman to have,โ the duke praised.
Her uncle placed his napkin onto his plate and shared, โMy niece spends hours riding around our country estate. I daresay she would prefer to ride over anything else.โ
โIs that so?โ the duke asked.
โIt is,โ Emmeline confirmed. โI find riding to be incredibly gratifying.โ
The duke eyed her with approval. โYou shall be able to ride on our lands, assuming you take two grooms along with you.โ
โThat wonโt be necessaryโโ she attempted.
He cut her off, his voice curt. โYou will be a duchess, and it is not appropriate for you to travel anywhere without an escort.โ
Emmeline lowered her gaze to her hands in her lap.
โDear heavens, that was poorly done of me,โ the duke said. โI apologize for being so sharp with you.โ
She brought her gaze back up to meet his. โConsider it forgotten, Your Grace.โ
The duke smiled again, drawing her attention back to the food stuck in his teeth. โAs long as you are mindful to remember your place, we shall have a happy union.โ
โMy place?โ she found herself questioning.
The dukeโs smile dimmed. โI am marrying you, without a dowry,โ he explained. โI must say that it is rather generous of me.โ
Lady Taylor interjected, โIt is most generous of you, Your Grace.โ
โIn exchange, I expect you to be
