Emmeline leaned her head against the windowsill and allowed herself to cry. She felt so alone. Her heart had yet to heal from her parentsโ deaths, and her pain was still raw. At times, her unrelenting grief seemed unbearable.
The door to her room opened, and her raven-haired ladyโs maid stepped into the room. Her hair was tied back at the nape of her neck. โAre you ready to undress?โ she asked as she closed the door.
Not bothering to spare her a glance, Emmeline replied, โI suppose I am.โ
โYou sound reluctant.โ Mary came to stand next to her and asked, โAre you thinking about your parents again?โ
Emmeline nodded, seeing no reason to deny it. โI am.โ
โThat is to be expected, especially since you are facing such a difficult choice,โ Mary reasoned.
Meeting her ladyโs maidโs gaze, she asked, โWhat should I do?โ
โWhat is your heart telling you to do?โ
Emmeline huffed. โIf only it was that simple.โ
โIt can be.โ
โMy aunt and uncle would be furious if I donโt marry the duke.โ
Placing a hand on her sleeve, Mary asked, โBut could you live with yourself if you did?โ
โI donโt know.โ
Mary removed her hand, then remarked, โI cannot advise you one way or the other, but I can tell you that your mother would most assuredly want you to be happy with your choice.โ
Emmeline gave her a timid smile. โI appreciate you staying on as my ladyโs maid after my mother passed away,โ she said.
โThere is no place I would rather be,โ Mary replied as she returned Emmelineโs smile.
โI know what I want to do, but I donโt know if I am strong enough,โ Emmeline admitted.
โJust be true to yourself, and everything will work out.โ
Emmeline shook her head. โMy aunt and uncle will no doubt ask me to leave their townhouse, and I shall have to seek out employment.โ
โDo you believe that theyโd truly be so unfeeling that they would do such a thing?โ Mary asked. โAfter all, this is your home.โ
โIt became their home when my father died,โ she pointed out. โAs my aunt has stated on multiple occasions, I am just a guest here.โ
โThat is terrible of her to say such a thing.โ
โThey are just words.โ
โWords can still hurt deeply,โ Mary expressed, compassion in her voice.
โI suppose I am growing accustomed to my auntโs criticism,โ Emmeline admitted as she turned away from the window.
โThat is a shame.โ
Emmeline sat down on the settee at the foot of her bed. โI shall turn twenty-one in a week, and I will finally reach my majority. I will be able to access the inheritance of three thousand pounds that my grandmother left for me.โ
โThat is a tidy sum.โ
โIt is not enough to live on for the rest of my days, though,โ Emmeline said dejectedly.
Mary bobbed her head. โThat may be true, but it is a start.โ
Emmeline frowned. โWhat is it a start of?โ
โWhatever you decide your future to be.โ
โYou are not the least bit helpful,โ Emmeline remarked with a shake of her head.
Mary grinned. โI am sure you will come to the correct decision on your own.โ
โYou have entirely too much faith in me.โ
โPerhaps you donโt have enough in yourself,โ Mary countered. โYou may just need a good nightโs sleep. Tomorrow, you will see things more clearly.โ
Emmeline rose and said, โI surely hope that is true.โ
