And after that?”

What was he wanting her to say?

“What would your mother do if you’d thrown a tantrum while at one of her friend’s houses?”

She winced. “Well, she wouldn’t spank me.” She shot him a quelling look. He just grinned. As though the idea of spanking her was enjoyable.

“And then she’d likely ground me for a month. Take away any privileges and then freeze me out. And then once she started talking to me again, she’d bring it up over and over.”

“That’s kind of what I figured. So you learned to hold everything inside so she wouldn’t freeze you out or scold you again and again until it ate you up inside.”

“Pretty much.”

“A spanking or any kind of punishment I give, that’s it. Sure, I might scold you. Depending on the crime, you might get a spanking and corner time or lines. But afterward, I’ll hold you tight and tell you how wonderful you are. I’ll give you all the aftercare you need. And then that’s it. Do the time, serve the crime and there is no more punishment.”

“Really?” She gave him a skeptical look.

“Really.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. She hadn’t realized that it had come free. She needed to fix it. She’d put it in a bun before leaving the house, but as soon as Ed had seen it, he’d pulled her hair free. Apparently, she wasn’t allowed to wear her hair in a bun anymore. So they’d compromised and she’d braided it.

She’d never realized that men had an opinion on how women wore their hair. She now knew better.

“So you’re going to spank me now?”

His head reared back. “What? No! That’s not what I meant.”

“I’m confused.”

“You haven’t done anything wrong to deserve punishment. If anyone has, it’s me.”

“Why?” she asked.

“For not telling you about Aunt Marie. For making you feel even an instant of panic over something I could have prevented. I feel like shit about that.”

“You couldn’t have known . . . “

He shot her a look. “I could have thought it through better. I wanted it to be a surprise, a nice surprise.”

And she’d ruined that. She bit her lip.

“Nope. No feeling guilty for you. You have done nothing wrong, hear me? Nothing. But there is one thing we need to discuss.”

“What’s that?”

“You using words like freak and stupid.” He gave her a stern look.

Oh.

“There is nothing stupid or freakish about you. I’m not going to punish you this time. But if you say anything like that about yourself or anything you do, you won’t be sitting for a good long while. Understand?”

“Yes.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“Yes, Big Daddy,” she whispered.

He grimaced at her name for him. But she saw his lips twitch.

“I know you’re worried about what other people will think if they learn you’re a Little. I get it. There are members of this town who would react badly to who I am. It’s not always easy to be the sheriff and a Daddy Dom, which is why I go to the city to a club. Where I can be anonymous. I wouldn’t do anything to put your career and reputation at risk.”

“My boss and colleagues wouldn’t understand. Most of them, anyway. Some might have their own secret kinks.”

“Probably more than you know.”

“I just feel like my Little side is getting closer to the surface and if I mess up—”

“You won’t. And if your Little comes out in front of someone who doesn’t understand then we’ll deal with it. You trust me to protect you? Even after I messed up today?”

There was no question.

She threw herself forward. “Of course I do, Big Daddy.”

“Thank you, my girl. That means more to me than I can express.” He drew her gently back. “Now, would you like to do some shopping or would you prefer to just go home? You look a bit pale and shaky.” He frowned with concern.

“I always feel a bit like this after a panic attack.”

“All right then we’ll head home and you can have a nap.” He stood with her in his arms. His hand was firmly under her ass.

“No, Daddy, wait. Please, I don’t want to go home.”

“You need to rest. I can feel you shaking against me.”

“But I’m here. And I want to look around. Please.”

“I don’t want you walking around. What if you feel faint, fall over, and hit your head?”

He had a real obsession with her hitting her head. “I’m sure you’d catch me.”

He grunted as though in affirmation but didn’t look appeased by that. Shoot. Seemed she was going home for a nap. Thing was, now that she’d gotten over her initial shock and panic she really wanted to see what was in here.

“Please, Daddy.” She’d never attempted to give someone puppy dog eyes, but that was what she was aiming for.

He huffed out a breath. “All right, we’ll stay. But there are two conditions.”

“What are they?” she asked suspiciously.

“One, you’ll tell me immediately if you feel dizzy, ill, or sick.”

“I’ll be fine now,” she reassured him.

“Georgina,” he said in a low, warning voice. “We can go straight home right now.”

“Okay, I promise.” Sheesh. He was really serious about this.

“Two, you drink a bottle of water. I want you rehydrated.”

“I don’t have any water.”

“Aunt Marie keeps some in a fridge for the Littles who visit. Surprisingly, quite a few Littles have problems remembering to drink water.”

“Well, there are much more interesting things to drink. Chocolate milk, Dr. Pepper, coffee. Yum, coffee.”

He shook his head. “Water. That’s it.”

“All right. I’ll drink the water.” He set her down and moved away. He returned with a kid’s drink bottle with a plastic straw at the top. It was in the shape of a penguin.

Oh my Lord. It was adorable. She instantly wanted it. But she put her hands behind her back. “I can’t take that.”

“It’s okay, we can pay for it at the end. No one else has drunk out of it.”

“I . . . really?”

“Really.” He handed it to her. She took it and sipped from the straw. The
