a new bow and motors for the agency express cruiser. Donโ€™t worry, you can afford it. Texas Walt is raking it in hand over fist out in Detroit.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s still in business?โ€

โ€œAt least until we get the Coast Guard contract back.โ€

Bell turned to Pauline. โ€œIs Ed O.K.?โ€

โ€œEdโ€™s fine. They stitched him up. It was a vein, not an artery . . . Isaac, I must speak with you.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œMarion has given me a wonderful idea.โ€

Bell glanced at Marion. โ€œSheโ€™s good at them.โ€

โ€œI want to take young Asa for my apprentice.โ€

โ€œTo Germany?โ€

โ€œWith his parentsโ€™ permission, of course.โ€

โ€œI believe heโ€™s an orphan.โ€

โ€œAll the better. So am I. Isaac, make it so.โ€

The chief investigator of the Van Dorn Detective Agency turned to its founder.

Van Dorn said, โ€œYour call.โ€

Bell locked eyes with Pauline and shared a private smile. โ€œBased on how your apprentice handled a machine gun this afternoon, you might consider allowing him to carry a small pistol.โ€

โ€œAll in good time,โ€ said Pauline. โ€œThank you, Isaac. And thank you, Marion.โ€

Van Dorn eased himself back down into his wheelchair and rolled toward the door. โ€œWeโ€™re shoving off. Dorothy wants me home in bed.โ€

They agreed to talk in the morning. โ€œAfternoon,โ€ Marion corrected them. โ€œLate afternoon.โ€

A freshly scrubbed Asa Somers appeared in a bathrobe with Band-Aids plastered on his brow. Pauline spoke quietly to him and they headed out the door.

โ€œALONE AT LAST,โ€ said Marion. โ€œIs your arm all right? Youโ€™re favoring it.โ€

โ€œJust a little sore. Where are they going in bathrobes?โ€

โ€œI got them a room upstairs.โ€

โ€œOne room?โ€

โ€œThe hotelโ€™s packed because of the storm. It has twin beds, I think,โ€ she added briskly. โ€œTheyโ€™ll work it out.โ€

โ€œGood idea.โ€

โ€œNow, what about you?โ€ Marion asked. โ€œWhat would you like?โ€

โ€œI could use a drink.โ€

Marion said, โ€œIโ€™ll join you.โ€

โ€œAnd a hot bath.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll join you.โ€
