Elliott glanced up to see Seanβs butler carrying a piece of paper. βDo ye have a telegram for me?β
βYes, sir. Mr. MacKlenna said if one arrived, I was to give it to you.β
Elliott accepted the telegram, nodding as he read the news from Kit and Cullenβs son Thomas in California. βThereβs no return message right now. Thank ye.β Elliott refolded it, tapped the edge against his palm, and then tucked the telegram in his jacket pocket.
He took one last sip of coffee, allowing himself a brief moment to appreciate the rich, dark flavor, then set the cup on its saucer and thought back to the familyβs trip to Montgomery Winery in 1881.
Thomas had blamed Elliott for his motherβs fall and even his fatherβs heart attack. The fall was unrelated to the heart attack, but Thomas couldnβt separate one from the other. Since he was coming to Kentucky, the visit would be Elliottβs opportunity to mend a few fences when he saw the lad again.
Elliott pushed away from the table and walked out onto the rear porch, where Kit was painting MacKlenna Farmβs morning colors. He waited until she lifted the brush off the canvas before announcing himself, having learned a long time ago never to surprise an artist. A slip of the paintbrush could ruin a masterpiece.
When she lifted the brush and stepped back, he cleared his throat, and a look of surprise came over her face, changing quickly to a delighted smile.
βYou look thrilled, and youβre holding what might be a telegram. Is it from Thomas?β
They stared at each other across the walnut porch. The look on her face took him back decades, to when Kit was a teenager and competing in horse shows. He hurried to close the distance between them and pulled her in for a hug.
βAye, Thomas is coming and bringing Sarah, John, and Frances.β
She stepped back out of his arms. βWhat about Francesβs husband?β
βHe didnβt say, but Clare, Abigail, and Kristen and their husbands are coming from Washington.β
Kitβs eyes lit up. βAnd the children? Are they coming, too?β
βThe telegram doesnβt mention yer grandchildren.β
Kit held out her hand. βLet me read it.β
Elliott cocked his head. βWas there a please in that command?β
βPlease,β she said, wiggling her fingers.
βThatβs better.β Elliott handed over the telegram.
She read it slowly before hugging the telegram to her chest as tears slid down her cheeks. βItβs really true. Theyβre all coming to see us.β She glanced to the side while wiping away tears. Then she let out a deep sigh and grimaced slightly.
βWhatβs wrong? Why the grimace?β
She glanced back at him and managed a smile. βThereβs so much to do to prepare for all those people. Thereβs not enough room in the house for everyone, and all this company is such an imposition on Sean and Lyle Ann.β
βWhat are ye talking about? Yeβre the daughter of Seanβs twin sister. Yer family is his family.β
βI know, butββ
βBut nothing. Thereβs plenty of room here, at the cottage, and at Sean IIβs house. Weβll make do.β
βI just wish I knew when theyβll arrive.β
Elliott looked at the telegram again. βWe have to assume theyβll be here in four or five days. Thatβs plenty of time to get ready.β
βMaybe.β She picked up a cloth to wipe her hands. βHave you told Emily?β
βI came straight to ye.β
βSheβll be so happy to see her mother and grandparents, but Iβm worried about her father since they didnβt mention him,β Kit said.
βIf heβd already passed, Sean would have mentioned it when Emily asked about her parents. He only said that her fatherβs law practiceβDuffy and Duffyβwas expanding to Chicago. From that, I gathered Christopher is alive and well.β
βI hope youβre right. Whereβs Emily now?β
βShe went with Lyle Ann to visit sick neighbors. Theyβll be back by early afternoon.β
Kit packed up her paints and carefully lifted the canvas off the easel. βWould you carry the easel, please?β
He picked it up and followed Kit into the house. βWhere do ye want to put this?β
βIn the library. Itβll be out of the way there.β They entered the library, and Kit crossed the room to the darkest corner. βPut the easel up here. I want the painting to stay out of the sunlight for now.β Elliott straightened the easel, and Kit draped the canvas on it, then set her paint box on the bottom shelf of one of the bookcases.
βWhereβs Cullen?β Elliott asked.
βThe last I saw him, he and Sean were riding off to a neighborβs to look at a filly for sale.β
βI thought ye would have gone with them.β
βThey didnβt need me. Cullen and Braham know more about horses than anyone Iβve ever met, and Iβve met a lot of horse people.β
βMaybe, but ye know how to treat them when theyβre sick. Cullen canβt do that.β
Meredith entered the room. βCullen canβt do what?β
βHeal sick horses.β
βOh,β Meredith said. βSo what have you two been doing? I heard you banging doors.β
βThomas sent a telegram,β Kit said, beaming. βHeβs bringing Emilyβs mother and grandparents, and the girls are coming from Washington. Iβll have my whole family here.β
βDid he mention the grandchildren?β Meredith asked. βI know you want to see them, too.β
βHe didnβt say,β Kit said. βHe didnβt mention my father, either. I wish we knew more about his life over the past few years, where he went, what he did.β
βNone of my genealogists have found any information about him since he sailed away in the fall of 1881. I doubt Thomas has seen him,β Meredith said.
βItβd be nice to know what happened to him.β
Meredith sat down at the desk and removed a piece of paper out of the top drawer. βWe should make lists of how many people weβll have and how many rooms theyβll need. Weβll probably have to use Sean IIβs house as well.β
βIf it makes things easier, Sean and I will sleep in the cabin,β Elliott said.
βNo, you wonβt. Youβll stay right here,β Kit said. βThe girls have heard so much about my godfather, and theyβll all want to spend time with you. You
