I blow out all of the nervous air in my lungs. “So, according to my birth-mom’s wishes, I should fight the demon that has been hunting my family. In order to do that and succeed, it turns out I need myself a little army. So, my question is…”
“We’re in!” Luna shouts excitedly.
Neo nods and shrugs. “What she said.” He points to Luna.
I stand in awe, mouth hanging open. I feel like I couldn’t have heard them right but both of them watch me, sure of themselves. I shuffle my feet, and my fingers twirl together. I’m not sure where to go from this moment. “Guys… Thanks so…”
My words are cut off when an ear-piercing shattering sound causes everyone to jump. I spin toward the noise and a hulking shape crawls through Morgan’s kitchen window above the sink. The man pulls himself over the countertop and lands on his feet in front of me. I’m frozen, confused by what is happening.
The intruder stands tall and his black eyes land on me with a disturbing smirk across his face. A demon.
I clench my fist together, ready to show another demon what I have inside of me, but I spin in my spot when another demon walks easily into the kitchen from the back of the house.
Neo shouts from behind me. “Leave now, or you will both regret it!”
The demons both laugh a menacing harmony that sends chills to the deepest part of me. The first demon, also the largest one, lifts his chin, seemingly unafraid. “Nah, we’re plenty happy right here with all of you.”
I back up until I find Luna and I grab her hand in mine but don’t turn away from the threat in front of me. “Luna, go find Maggie and your mom. And hurry.”
“Okay.” She says quietly and runs to the hallway that leads back into the living room.
The smaller demon eyes her as she exits the standoff, but doesn’t make a move to follow. “Hmmm,” he says. “That’s too bad. I was hoping I’d get the little one.”
“Neither of you is gettin’ anybody, so shut up.” Neo says cooly beside me. He takes a step forward so he is slightly in front of me, ready to attack.
The smaller demon, with his brown spiky hair and pale white skin looks jittery and dying for a fight. I pull the familiar heat inside my body to my hands, hoping it continues to pay off as it has before.
The bulky one steps closer to us and says something unintelligible to his partner before running straight for me. I gasp but throw my hands up at him, focused on the heat coming off of my hands. As soon as he reaches me, my palms smack his chest and send him flying back into the counter behind him. The sound of granite and wood crumbling beneath his hard body is nearly deafening.
I turn to my left, just as Neo collides with the smaller demon and they burst through the back door, onto the lawn. Cold air rushes into the house from where they busted the door off of its hinges.
My body is warm, and I feel power flow through me. I step closer to the big guy as he gets back to his feet. He roars at me and sidesteps, stalking me. “You’re gonna die little girl.”
I lean forward, ready to brawl like Gavin taught me. “Barron is going to regret sending you. I don’t know why he can’t pick a better challenge.” I taunt him with only a slight shake to my voice. I’m getting braver!
The giant charges me again and I side-step just quick enough to only get a small scratch on my arm from his nails. I spin around and am able to follow his quick movements better than I ever have. He zigzags at me and I throw a fist at his face, connecting, but not with the force I hoped for.
The demon’s head whips to the right from my punch but he turns back around too quick, looking angrier.
A loud bang comes from the living room and the demon turns at the sound. I take the opportunity to jump on his back and wrap my arms around his neck. My arm fits easily in the wide space, considering he is probably three times my size. I pull as tight as I can and pulse as much energy into where my skin touches his.
The demon sucks in a sharp breath and reaches for my arm, but his own arms become too weak. He falls to the floor, all of the liquid draining from his body from my new ability. I don’t let go until he is all the way on his face. I jump off of him and scan the room around me.
There is no other noise in the house. I step through the hole where the back door once was and try to find Neo, but he is nowhere to be seen.
“Neo!” I call out into the night, but only silence greets me.
I give up on him for the moment and run through the house toward the living room, hoping Luna is okay and found the Wiccas. As I turn the corner into the large room I gasp at the sight before me. The room is in worse shape than the kitchen.
The bean bags are torn to shreds across the floor and the front window that has a view of the street is busted. I peer out the missing window and I see my two beautiful Wiccas standing in the grass with Luna tucked behind them and a demon struggling for air in the center of the lawn.
Morgan has a hand stretched out to the female demon, causing her to somehow be unable to breathe. I climb through the window and run to the women.
Luna gasps when she sees me and wraps me in a tight hug. “Oh my goodness, I’m so glad you’re okay!”
I nod against her crazy curly hair. “I’m glad you’re
