Who am I?

This is a poem, and yet it is more.
Read on, and I'll tell you what it is for:
it describes some of my features and traits.
My friend, who could I be? Headache awaits...

You'll find me in silence, at night and at day.
But from houses and cars I will stay away.
I am not in the open, not in a cave
and I'm sure I have never been in a grave.

For I am very old, you know me so well.
Though I'm with the devil, I was not in hell.
But darkness is not my friend, it's the light,
and always I'm at a place which is bright.

In loudness and chaos you won't find my face,
only at the heart of emptiness and praise.
With three friends like me I live in a city
Two of them tell me this could be a pity.

You maybe have seen me a million times,
and I was involved in a million crimes.
Though I am not evil myself, you must know:
but Evil would not exist without me, although...

Please do not fear me, my name's often reviled
and I have been with you since you were a child.
Even now I've been with you in every line.
Do you understand now? That would be so fine.

I am not a demon, but I have no heart.
Believe me, I was right there, just from the start.
At last, you find me at the core of a smile.
You have to admit, I'm really versatile.

Without magic you could put me on a spell:
I would obediently serve you, oh well.
And if you curse me for worse or for better:
please let me know, I like every letter!
