The Black Rose

She walked the path of darkness, Danced with the nightime shadows, She bore the black rose of midnight, This lady who stole my soul. She smiled through the darkest eyes, Inviting me to her shadow's dance, Enticed by the scent of the black rose, I reached out and took her hand. A single kiss held me captive, The simple spell of a single breath, A single whisper from her heart, Caught in the fragrance of death. My blood flowed dark and cold, Lowering my heartbeat to a whimper, Bearly heard above the silence, It joined hers in it's whisper. She collapsed then, into my arms, Pale and wan and deathly cold, Devoid of the blood of life, Her ghostly spirit stole my soul. Waves of shadows overwhelmed me, To lose me in their very depth, Deep in sorrow filled emotion, I tasted the bereavement she served. I felt my soul rise with the breeze, To float above my human form, I looked down on my own fragility, And felt so lonely and forlorn. I tried to follow in her wake, I reached out to grab her dying ember, I almost felt her peaceful sleep, I longed for Death to take me with her. Lost in the stillness of her death, I almost touched the secret formula, The dark knowledge of peaceful serenity, Within the shadow of a forbidden love
