Slaughter In The Garden

Most of the time he is so affable; easy going.
He is good looking, and keeps in shape.
He is proud, and walks with his head held high.

Near the French door on this
warm March day,
He releases a strange, almost dour cry.

Taken off-guard, I approach with an uneasy feeling,
not wanting to see dissected bodies.
I open the door with great apprehension.

When he is on the hunt nothing deters him.
Sitting there, he is unwilling to stop;
to bother, even, to look at me.

There on the pavement I spot the victim’s lifeless body.
This one just a baby; he is so small and still.
I must distract Cosmo, my cat, with a treat.
Thus allowing the lizard a chance to bolt.

This tiny reptile must have thought
today was just like any another. A time
to scavenge in the garden, relax on a rock;
bask in the sun.

He must now be ever vigilant.
He knows there predator there in the garden,

but there is also a friend.
