Fighting With A Wounded Heart

My heart is beating wildly,
My ears are loudly ringing,
My body is shaking,
I am scared.

I smell muddy water,
The gas, the gun smoke.
It makes me wonder again why I am here.

Shaking cruelly,
The pin is pulled.
The grenade prepared for flight.
I lock eyes with the enemy,
I hesitate
Why am I doing this?
He is just like me fatigued, scared, hungry.
I try not to think about his family.
I throw the hand grenade,
He is hit.
I am not supposed to feel,
They are enemy.

I duck back down.
The man next to me is in pure anguish.
He is my friend, I comfort him.
However it is too late,
The darkness falls.
I close his eyes lightly with my fingers,
If I live through this,
I will tell his mother he didn't suffer.

I fight with an angry courage,
With all my hearts desire to win.
All I think about is sleep, food, and victory.
I wonder why I am still alive,
While fellows are dying.

Everything becomes quiet,
I kneel to the ground,
There is wetness on my cheek,
I have no desire to live,
I just lost my little brother.
