The Harbingers of Winter
When I watch the birds migrate
and bats preparing to hibernate
the busy squirrels storing food
as the weather is up to no good
see the days become the shortest
and the temperature is the coldest
then I know the winter is here again
just to render lifeβs vibrancy a drain
the snowshoe hare then turns white
as its fur must now imitate the snow
the arctic foxes and weasels are right
for all white-tailed jackrabbits know
just as skunks, badgers, and raccoons
stashing their new grubs like baboons
greedily stuffing their big hollow cheeks
as beavers must nibble below icy creeks
we too someday must stop by the woods
on a snowy evening after the four seasons
of life here is spent to stockpile daft goods
in frantic vanity hoards of all absurd reasons.
Winter Matrix of Xmas Carols
It was during a Silent Night in a frosty winter
and brightly shone the moon that night when
Mary's Boy Child Jesus Christ was born
Away in a Manger a king with a lowly birth
O Little Town of Bethlehem in thick snow
a winter time to be known as The First Noel
the weather was cold and Frosty the Snowman
Three Wise Men gave gold, frankincense, myrrh
God Rest You Merry Gentlemen for your gifts
When The Babe of Bethlehem was quietly born
It indeed brought so much of Joy to the World
there were so many little Bells Over Bethlehem
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing with much joy
deep and crisp and even was the snow lay about
Good King Wenceslas and his entire household sang
A Christmas Folk Song with so much joy
Now it is Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas
and always I am dreaming of a White Christmas
O Come All Ye Faithful and let's Deck the Halls
with boughs of holly for it is the season to be jolly
and so during The Twelve Days of Christmas
O Christmas Tree we will adorn with Jingle Bells
we shall glide and sway with The Christmas Waltz
and there will be a lot of fun with Jingle Bell Rock
and so do Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
hear old Auld Lang Syne asking you all old friends
as This is Xmas should auld acquaintance be forgot
to you I hear the voice of Jolly Old St Nicholas say
I'll be Home for Christmas to teach Irish Carols
and a special Spanish carol Feliz Navidad
and there would be no more The Loneliest Lonely
kids are happy for Santa Claus is Coming to Town
riding his jolly old Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
he said, when I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth
thatβs funny coming from The Little Drummer Boy
I will go on a trip to Kruger Park with my entire family
we shall not be home for Christmas Eve with You
and so again, We Wish You a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year! And so go ahead and
sing the pristine Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la la la la!
in spite of the coldest weather, Fa la la la la la la la!
Healing Verses of Winter
Winter is between fall and spring
it is like the human seasons of life
when childhood soon old age bring
where senility and emotions strife
life and winter have common dangers
the blizzards of life are its vicissitudes
avalanches, frostbites are not strangers
to those who see life in its amplitudes
it comes in late December year end
when the solstice of life is changing
and our mortal minds and cold tend
to thrive in tandem with our ageing
are you weary, are you very sick?
or shrouded in blankets of gloom
hear these healing verses and pick
the beam of hope to replace doom
the human spirit is like the fir tree
its roots are like the anchors of faith
that heals the body and sets it free
from every sad shadows of a wraith
its stem is like the high spirit that lifts
the tired soul from incurable despair
it flies like the blithe lark that drifts
the bouquets are refreshed in repair
for the word of God cannot be separated
from the presence of God; and so believe
that God is here for you to be saturated
with total healing that is yours to receive
receive healing in all parts of your soul
listen to the gentle rush of an inner voice
urging you to relax while it makes whole
your body to revive with your new choice
faith comes by hearing of Godβs word
so you are now healed from every sickness
that strikes fear in men all over the world
by measuring your faith with its thickness
believe to receive without a sanctimony
it shall be permanent like a lionβs fame
and it shall now become your testimony
for it was asked in Jesusβ precious name.
Frosty Whiffs of Love
The things I like most about winter
are not the flakes that hang in my hair
nor the gifts I get from my big sister
it is the frosty whiffs of love in the air
the cozy feelings that are so blissful
tease the kids that jolly on wet ground
and the crisp cool weather so peaceful
rays a glitter on snow that litter around
I like the flashy lightings that drape
fine fir Christmas treesβ decorations
and the noiseless flakes that scrape
from the icy mountains like carnations
the Christmas that smells in my nose
candles that beam inside get sticky
frosty window panes so hard to close
many gifts to choose and be so picky
the taste of icing that dance on a hot cake
is a familiar smell of nostalgia that sleeps
all I have to do now is to just ask and take
my lover on trips for souvenirs and for keeps
but above all these things what I like most
is the love of the creator whose son he gave
to us preach the gospel from coast to coast
slain for our sake but is always there to save.
Caging the Poet Persona
With stealth like a dream you swap
my real identity, my ego, my choice
you mesmerize, confuse and slap
me into line to hum tunes of a voice
that seems so near yet so unfamiliar
how can you be mine yet so peculiar?
you turned me into a laughing stock
when we coalesce with the muse
to fashion an entity, make me stuck
if I say βmy voice is hoarseβ, to fuse
the possessive noun with the object
then who is the real carrier to reject?
two masters I cannot serve same time
if the psyche is mine then be altruistic
to labour and sacrifice days of my prime
delight as an advocate of a true holistic
yolk of compassion, as I bestride piety
hope, faith in God, an impact on society
if my libido drives conflict conventions
as prison walls to cage my convictions
of uncivilized behaviour, why alternate
my true confessions made so passionate
to make a laughingstock of my solemnity
while making no mistake of true sublimity?
The Winter Games We Play
When the moon is shinning
the cripples become hungry for walk
but when the snow is falling
both the young and old crave to talk
reclusive into snow playing
the winter games we play
winter activities involve the use of snow
like the potter uses the clay
bobsledding ice-covered tracks we know
snow cannons that we say
are sometimes man-made loves we grow
joy on fiberglass planks glide
skis that are strapped to feet with bindings
sledding we use sled to slide
snow Castle of Kemi one of largest buildings
ever made of snow we piled
snowboarding down mountains
the playful physical combats of snowball fight
volleys of targets from fountains
we device fun from ice that make our eyes bright
we slash our boredom in curtains
in the winter cold we go ice biking
penetration under ice go ice diving
skates, special boots go ice skating
frozen waterfalls we go ice climbing
sailboat fitted runners go ice boating
frozen water openings go ice fishing
automobile ice surfaces go ice racing
brooms, stones, bulls-eye go curling
out of blocks of ice sculpture carving
skates, sticks, puck ice hockey playing.
The Last Winter Ice Fishing Contest
The winter got the better of me
and out of me brought the best
an angler with a hook in hand
a cool frozen brook I traversed
to scour for an ideal spot to fish
a hole on the frozen river I drilled
the bait deceitfully hid the tiny tip
of the dreadful barbs of the hook
in the tiny frozen crack I dipped it
and waited for a tug from the depths
a stool on the open frozen lake I sat
suddenly a tug, a yank and I hauled
out came a tiny trout I threw back
a prize money exacts a bigger catch
and the haul pegged at a fixed time
the time tickled by, solitary I waited
suddenly a pull, a lug and I heaved
out came a giant trout fit for a prize
surely today is my luckiest day
the biggest haul has the prize claim
but my heart sank as I saw the fish
quietly it came out without a fight
sticking out of its jaw four hooks
like laurels from deathβs close shave
the giant veteran many battles seen
it knew death in every bait lurked
and in every potential meal a danger
just as I knew of fishing on thinner ice
frostbite due to prolonged exposure
in solidarity the hook I cut and set it free.
The Sun Shines in Winter
When the Lord chose to come in winter
it was because it was so predestined
that in the coldest of life's season
came He to warm hearts that's so bitter
for his coming not to be clandestined
a star shone in the night sky a reason
as the three wise men found their way
to a manger where the baby Jesus laid
their obeisance to pay, gifts to give
treacherous Herod had nothing to say
He came from heaven our sins are paid
He took death away so we all may live
even if snow doesn't fall in all parts
everywhere the stars still shine above
as the sun daily shines in the blue sky
over all trees in winter for our hearts
to thaw and warm up to His undying love
so that there would be no more any cry.
