My Dad’s Car.

By Will Chandler

In 1963 my dad bought a Cortina Estate
From another mechanic who was also a mate.
He kept his vehicle up until it was smashed in 1978
When a drunk drove into it at the end of our gate.

My dad went crazy and flew into a rage
That was quite a scene, especially at his age.
His anger and temper he could not cage
On the outcome of this tale you would not wage.

He called the police, they came in a rush
They made a remark, β€œwell your car they’ll have to crush.”
At this my dad wept and went all a-mush
And I said to the coppers, β€œdon’t say that, please hush.”

The policemen took the drunk man away
But clearly this wasn’t my dad’s day.
He went up the stairs and on his bed he lay,
I suppose that was enough excitement for one day.

The event that followed was rather bizarre
For the mate from who my dad had bought the car
Had found an identical motor and travelled afar
And brought it for my dad, and we all cried hurrah!
