All my children

A new idea enters my head.
A long nine months lie ahead.
Plotting, characters and world creation.
Painting and baby proofing for the special occasion.

First sentence, first paragraph, the first draft is underway.
First born, first steps, here comes her first birthday.
First words, I'm up all night.
Gotta make sure all is right.

Always mistakes that need correcting.
Gotta keep my children in the right direction.
Time wears on, they need me less.
They're now running the show and passing the test.

Submitting letters and facing rejection,
Rejected like many but my children are the exception.
The publishers and colleges succumb to our persistence,
Lying mightily on the table are letters of acceptance.

Now my children have been set free
Now my children support me
Truly independent of their maker
Are all my children of flesh and paper
