The White Horse of Happiness

Once I stood beside the path
of life and all I did was wait.
I knew the horse must come my way,
no matter if it’s late.
And when I’d waited long enough,
I heard its hoofs a pounding.
It was the Horse of Happiness,
appearance quite astounding!
Head held up high, the posture proud,
strong flanks with muscles flexing,
the horse raced by me, speed insane,
I jumped, I had to catch it!
I grabbed its flowing mane - and yes!
I rode the Horse of Happiness.

And faithfully, upon her back,
through time and space, she carried me,
through turmoil, unrest, fear and pain.
I did not mind my destiny!
So down the path of life we sped,
my spirits soared, it seemed to me
that as I sat up, riding high,
the world I’d conquered finally!
But then - we had not come too far! -
the Horse, she bucked and threw me down.
And as she vanished into dust,
I, once so proud, I hit the ground!
And what I’d treasured uppermost,
the Horse of Happiness I’d lost.

My body paralysed, my mind
so stunned I lay without a motion.
Now, what to do? Now, where to go?
I did not have the slightest notion.
And from my deepest soul I cried
the bitter tears of pity me,
as on the path of life I lay.
But very soon, eventually,
I raised my badly shattered self.
I crawled, I trembled, staggered, stood,
and cautiously I walked right down
the path of life and I felt good.
Now I’m still walking - and I see:
the Horse of Happiness, it’s me.
