Chapter's 1 & 2

Chapters 1

I suddenly got scared as I walked through the door on the first day of my senior year at Central High school. I smiled when her used-to-be friends smiled at me …. But ever since I learned that I was pregnant about a week before most of my so called friends didn’t want to be around me anymore. . Like being pregnant was a dieses, or contagious or something. Who cared anyway? Today was the day I would have to tell my boyfriend of three years that I was pregnant, after only having sex one time. I swallowed the lump in my throat as Luke made his way to me. As we hugged I whisper in his ear saying, “We need to talk. It’s important.” My voice came out in a high squeak, and I watched the smile fall off of his beautiful face. He grabbed my hand and leads me to the school roof where we would always hang out after school.

“What’s wrong?” Levi asks completely serious.

“Umm…. Levi I’m pregnant.”

“Ha-ha…. I thought you were being serious, know come on we are going to be late to the first class of our senior year!”

He starts to walk away but I pull him back by his and in a small voice I tell him that I’m not kidding, and he begins to cry. Saying how he is so young, and what about his soccer scholarship, and how he can’t be a father at 17. I fell torn inside knowing that the boy I love doesn’t want the baby that God had blessed her with. Tears welled up in my eyes. And I turned away hoping that he couldn’t tell. I picked my bag up off the floor and was ready to walk away when he found his voice.

“What are we going to do?” He asks.

“I don’t know…. I’m so sorry!” I say through my tears.

“No this is my fault! You weren’t ready, I begged and you agreed. Have you told your parents?”

“No, I think I am going to tell them after church tonight. Will you be there?”

“Yes, it’s our turn to teach the children the bible story.”

“Ok… I really should go. I need to get to class. I’ll see you later?”

“Bye. I’ll miss you Tor.” He says then lightly brushes his lips across mine and then I make my way to the steps. Heading to Mrs. Struthers’ Honors English class.

(Skip first 4 classes, @ lunch)

I dreaded lunch so I decided to keep my little secret as I was sure my “friends” would tell anyway. As I go to the cafeteria I quickly find Levi and talk him into going off campus to my house for a lunch I’m positive my mom cooked.

On the way there I ask questions about the pregnancy and telling our parents.

“Are you going to be in the baby’s life?” I ask. “I mean I understand if you’re not ready and want to continue your life, and of course there are things like adoption… among other things that would partially fix this problem, and I want to give you a choice in the matter. I know this is going to be hard, but like I said there are other things that could change that fact so we won’t have to be parents at such a young age.” I say, my words running together so it sounds like one sentence.

“Of course I’ll be in the baby’s life, but since your father isn’t home and he loves e I think we should tell your mom, and you know you will have to move out of the house, so we will move you out, of course I wouldn’t live with you, unless we were married. And then let your mom tell your dad.”

“I guess that’s a good idea.” I replied. As we pulled into the 4 bedroom house that I shared with my mom, dad, and my adopted 1 month old brother. “Are you ready for this?” I ask him quietly.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” he replies and grabs my hand before we get out of the car.

“Mom I’m home!” I yell as I walk into the too big house.

“I’m in the kitchen!” She yells back.

I walk into the kitchen completed with all of the new appliances.

“How are you Sweetheart?” Mom asks from the stove.

“I’m ok I guess.” I was about to chicken out when Luke nudged me from behind encouraging me to tell her. “Well actually I something to tell you, and you are NOT going to be. And I know this will change everything, but it’s my fault and I will take all of the consequences.”

“Sweetheart what are you talking about? Are you OK?” she asks worrying.

I begin to tear up, but I make it through and tell her the news. “Mom, I’m pregnant.”

My mom turns around to see if I’m kidding, when she sees that I’m serious. She begins the lecture. “Victoria, you are NOT married, I don’t know what you were thinking, and I know the answer. You WEREN’T thinking. I can’t believe this. Are you positive?”

“Yes Mom, I’m sure.”

“Well you and Luke are getting married and you are dropping out of school. And don’t even try to argue with me. You will not embarrass me and your father like this. As soon as I am finished cooking we will go to the court house and get yawl married. Luke, call your parents… NOW!!!”

“Yes ma’am.” Luke replied slowly.

Luke’s Phone Call

“Hello?”

“Hey mom, it’s Luke.”

“Oh, well Honey tell me why you aren’t at school?”

“Mom, Victoria is pregnant.”

“OH. Good for you!”

“So you aren’t angry?”

“No, of course not, God has simply blessed you with someone else to love you.”

“Well mom, were going to the court house to get married in about 20 minutes. We would hate to embarrass you and dad, and Mr. and Mrs. Mendez.”

“Oh, of course honey, but where will yawl live?”

I guess we will find a nice sized apartment and I’ll get a job and when Tori drops out of school she can go full time at the church daycare during the week all day.”

“Tori’s dropping out of school?”

“Well yeah she will have to drop out anyway when the baby is born. And we need the money, and even with yawls help, we will still be stretching money pretty far.”

“I guess, well will I see you for dinner tonight?”

“I don’t know mom, maybe. I got to go, call you later.”

“Bye Honey.”

Tori

As Luke talks on the phone with his mom I whisper argue with my own mother. “Mom, you can’t make me drop out of school and get married. I’m 17 years old!!!”

“You should have thought about that when you did what you did!”

“Mom, it was a stupid mistake. And I’m sorry it ever happened. But I can’t change it know, But you are going too far!”

“You will do as I say young lady!”

“FINE!” I yell, and go to my room and begin to pack.

Grabbing only the things I really want, like my make-up, my bible, my expensive clothes, (that wouldn’t fit that much longer) my phone charger, and any shoes that I might need. I quickly fill the bag and need to go to the store to get a few more. “Luke,” I yell “We need to go to the store and get more suit cases!”

“No we don’t, just use your parents, and when we get you all moved in we can bring them back.”

“I guess.” I mumble to myself.

By the time I’m finished packing my mom is also done and tells us to hurry and eat so we an go to the court house before it gets to crowded, but we are too anxious to eat so we just go. When we get there all we do is sign some papers, say I do a few times, and then suddenly my last name is no longer Mendez, but Wilson. And before I know what we are doing we are at Walmart buying necessary things for my parents’ average sized 3 bedroom guest house. Well used-to-be guest house anyway. Which was already furnished and perfect for a newlywed couple, for the baby all we would have to do is get different decorations for the nursery, when we knew what the gender of the baby was.

All of the sudden Mrs. Mendez turns and walks out of the door, and says in a cruel voice that “Your honeymoon will just have to wait.” And with that she was gone, we ended up going to Luke’s house for dinner, where I asked if we could not talk about the situation at play for a little while, because I just wasn’t ready for that yet. About halfway through picking at the food on my plate I get a frantic call from my mother.

“Hey Mom.”

“Your father was in an accident.”

“What. Is he okay?”

“They won’t tell me, I’m on my way to the hospital. I just wanted to let you know. Will I see you there?”
“Of course Mom, I’m not that heartless.”

“You’re not heartless at all.”

“Yeah, see you in about 15 minutes.”

I get off of the phone and begin to cry, Levi lifts his arm and puts it over my shoulder, “What’s wrong?” He whispers in my ear. And I don’t answer I just begin to cry even louder. I stand up and make my way to the front door, and once I get outside and into Luke’s car, he is running outside telling me to calm down and tell him what’s wrong. I tell him when he gets into the car, and then we’re rushing to the hospital, 15 minutes late I might add.

When we get there the nurse tells us that my mom is already back visiting him, when I ask if they can tell me what going on they tell me that the doctors would let us know a little later. After about 15 minutes of waiting the doctor walks up to us, with a slight frown on his face and tells us that my father was in an accident and a drunk driver rammed him in the back, and he hit his head on the steering wheel, and the car scooted too far ahead, and when the oncoming traffic couldn’t stop many cars rammed into his side of the car. And he didn’t make it. And I lose it yelling that he was lying and that in a couple minutes my dad would walk through that door any minute and yell at me and everything would end up being okay, it has to be.

When I go to tell mom that I’m going home, she isn’t crying or eeven a little upset. She is laughing and when I ask why she said “Why would I be sad, he gotten what he always wanted, to go home to be with the Lord.” I tell her I’ll see her later and I walk out of the hospital. Blowing my nose and go home to bed.
