Prologue

My eyes finally succumbed to my will for them to open, yet there was nothing. My sight denied me, my hearing had forsaken me and my senses knew nothing but the presence beside me. A gentle heat which warmed my being, to touch I was assured I would blister; I was hooked in a bond to another one where nothing was and nothing mattered but it alone. This bond linked by the simple press of a body and the connection of heat, the kind that had the stillness of my heart fluttering once again. Once my thoughts recoiled upon themselves, I was gifted my own mind, away from the emptiness they had wallowed in. I imagined homeโ€ฆ Where was home? With the loneliness, that couldn`t be prevented by this adoring warmth beside. No, home is where there`s sound and where things are seen and not hidden behind darknessโ€ฆ that was where I need to be not here walled in by the unknown. The thought caused this world I was caged in to shatter, the darkness clattered to the ground in a shimmering of shard and for my senses to join my mind in a blissful harmony of being alive. โ€œAre you Constance?โ€ a hushed voice inquired as a beam of light shone in my found sight, my hand lifted for the sake of feeling and my voice croaked a hoarse response that sound something like an agreement. Mumbling oddities I attempted raising myself only to feel a thunder of pain in my head as dizziness left me spinning, โ€œstay still Constance, youโ€™re ok nowโ€ a different voice called from my right. Only then did I feel the numbness of my body and the damp sodden liquid that had me surrounded, only then did my heart start hammering in my mouth from pain and fear. And only then did I wonder of what the darkness could have beenโ€ฆ

Chapter One

Lights blared above me, a constant hindrance that prevented me taking control of my sight. My head swerved to feel the soft glaze of my hair as I saw a pipe spouting from my arm; I had survived. Listening to the gentle bleep of my hearts monitor and the shallow concaves my ribs gave when I heaved in breath, I waited, what for? I didn`t know and yet I waited no less. My patience did not go ungifted for a man wearing white entered my line of sight, blocking the drip that nauseated me; he checked a clip board before dropping a scrutinising gaze at me. โ€œConstance?โ€ he asked, the unfamiliarity of his voice made me attempt memorising his features. He wasn`t attractive but his face held character, his chin too broad and his nose holding shapes within its grasp. I nodded my head ruffling the brunette strands of my hair into even more of a nest. โ€œCould you answer a few questions for me?โ€ he asked his voice was calmly trained to hide emotion so confidence could be found in him, though all I saw was the very distant look that set in his eyes after he had glanced at his papers. โ€œWhen we found you Constanceโ€ฆโ€ he paused as if regretting what he had already said, though his eyes reset themselves to reflect the professional he was, before continuing โ€œyou had a companionโ€. Staring oblivious to who I could have possibly been found with I searched for the answer. I had been alone, it had been late and I had been driving. Who would have possibly been with me? I remembered entering my car and the skid that toppled it upon itself several times over, but there had been no one beside me or near me before the crash. Throat sore and rasping as I spoke left me with nothing more than a subtle whispered response โ€œI don`t remember having anyone with meโ€ฆ Before the crash that isโ€, he listened intently with a new gusto for my words he hadn`t had before. โ€œHe claims to know you Constance and requests for you to see himโ€ he implored me doing so; his urging was through the strain in his face and the way he assessed my facial expression.

After having pulled myself up reliant on elbow grease and wincing at the pain that shot from my ribs, I considered actually knowing this person. I had thought him nothing more than a stranger but what If he was more, a friend, family? I felt guilty about the relief that flooded through me once I caught sight of the stranger, and once I knew I was not to blame for any damage to him. He was tall, slender and held intensity in his eyes as he watched my strain to meet him. He had bidden me a greeting with a nod of the head before inflicting his relentless gaze upon the doctor, who took a swift exit shortly after him doing so. This man seemed powerful and that I could tell from the mere glance I took at him. His physique appeared at first to do little for strength, but upon closer inspection he had the foundations that accented his body and the definition of a fighter built up in his shoulders. โ€œConstance, we must leave now my dearโ€ his voice nothing more than a hush, a song less melody that made the world hold place every time it was gifted to it, and it ricocheted cool breath against my ear. Leave? This guy was incredulous, sure breathtakingly beautiful, but no less than an idiot if he felt I could even move in my state. And why would I want to? I knew this man no more than a passer-by on the street, what day and age did he think a stranger could just acquaint someoneโ€ฆ But I wasn`t just someone, I was an accident victim and as was he from the sound of the doctor and he was made victim by my accident. โ€œLookโ€ I began, after getting frustrated with the bemused expression he held after noticing my comprehension, โ€œdo I look in any state to be gallivanting with you a stranger?!โ€ โ€“ Someone unruly attractive with passionate green eyes that see far deeper beneath my surface- But that part I had held to myselfโ€ฆ He didn`t look like he needed a confidence boost any time soon.
