Valerian by Diana Smyrnova (uplifting novels .txt) π
You' re looking back, back to the fireflies.
They are whirring around my soul.
I know they can't reach the hole,
the hole in my heart.
There' s no more reason to begin a start."

Prologue Year unknown, somewhere in mankind's history.
The past maybe. The present or the future.
The burning sun, a giant red fireball, so powerful and stunning.
It lit up the battlefield as it went down, kissed the ground covered in corpses. A ravishing view. I heard men still battling and screaming somewhere. My own, almost deaf body lay on the ground. I gazed through my dented helmet against the darkening sky. Covered by the blood of my enemies, my mates, my friends and my own. My breath was laborious and gasping. My throat burned like hell. The black hair stuck on my head and my eyes half open.
The heavy armor, I was wearing, would be my grave. It will be the only sign that proves my existence when I am gone. I, Cien Ryder, twenty-years old, unmarried, will die like a hero. Smirking about my uselessness, I sighed but it turned into a painful cough with throwing up blood.
My oppressed body wanted release, something that makes the pain disappear. But my brain was in full swing. At once I saw everything clear. My ears made scrunching steps out over the ground and suddenly a shadow covered my body. Adrenalin circulating through my veins. A big slaughterer stood in front of me. I stared at him through my helmet. He grinned full of rapture while he raised his sword. With an insane look he said: "I'll see you in hell."
My eyes narrowed. I never, ever killed somebody. "To all intents and purposes,", I murmured, "I do not want to do it.",
my voice broke. Again, adrenalin pumped through my whole body and in the next second there stood something that could be similar to a Gollum at first sight, but not as ugly as it. This thing was taller,... skinnier... with a long tail... long white hair with long peaked ears... long fingers and nails... long eyelashes which framed its big red eyes without light in it and a snub nose... its anatomy was grotesque but somehow human.
This being stood right in front, just a few centimetres before the slaughterer. He looked up without getting what just happened. A wide smile on the creature' s face from the one ear to the other, its spiky teeth showing. But its smile did not reach his eyes. Within a blink of an eye the slaughterer was parted in two, flying through the air.
Blood ran down the creature's hand and dropped from his nails.
It turned his head to the nearly gone sun, the smile disappeared.
It seemed tired.
Sad.
