prologue - age 6

Hiding behind a bush I look through the leaves as my father fights off a vampire, the vampire was winning and I was starting to cry. Daddy, I screamed in my head and the vampires head snapped my way. My eyes widen as it neared me. My father had a sword in his hand and stabbed the vampire in the heart right before he got to me. Letting out a loud breath in relief I raced over to my daddy hugging his leg.

“Are you okay daddy,” I asked softly while sniffling. He looked down at me with his bright blue eyes like the sky on a hot summer day. Smiling he nodded and kneeled down so he was at the same level as I was. Taking my hands in his he kissed my forehead and smiled again.

“You need to learn how to protect yourself, I won’t always be here for you,” he told me with a serious face. My smile developed into a frown.

“You won’t always be here with me,” I asked him sadly and started sniffling again. He shook his head and pulled me into a hug. Rubbing my back he murmured a few soothing words into my ear.

“I can’t Princess, you need to learn.” Pulling back from the hug I look into his blue eyes and tried to read them. What does he mean I need to learn? Standing up he motioned me to come here while he walked over to a tree across from where I was standing. I did as I was told and then a vampire came into view so I started to pull onto my father’s shirt. He noticed and he pushed me behind him. My father lunged towards the vampire and I covered my eyes not wanting to watch my father kill. Peaking through a gap in my hand I saw it was the exact opposite, this vampire was very skilled. He dodges almost every hit my father tries for. Running towards my father I became sadder and sadder as he was getting weaker. Finally making it to my father I see the vampire was strangling him. I started to push on the vampire with my tiny weak hands, then I felt myself grow sadder and I wanted him dead. Power jolted through me and was released by my hands, I had no idea what it was but now the vampire was slapping away my hands hissing in pain. I continued to do whatever I was doing until I heard their final scream. Wrapping my arms around my father I cried. He knelt down and hugged me closet to him.

“How did you do that Princess,” he asked me softly. Sniffling I pull back and tried to talk but my crying was overpowering it.

“I…d-d-don’t know-w- Da-Daddy,” I stuttered through my cries. I looked over at the dead vampire on the floor on his lower leg he had two hand imprints they looked like ice.

chapter one -

Slipping on my glittering white gown I wonder why I have to go to this ball. After the gown was I on I slipped my knife into a holster under it completely hiding it. Smoothing out my gown my maid cracks the door and comes in. I look over my shoulder at her and smile she is my maid but she feels more like a sister.

“Would you like me to do your hair Karen,” she asked me while creeping her way towards me. I nodded and she led to the bathroom where she had all the supplies. I closed my eyes still tired and wait until Ronnie, my maid, is done doing my hair.

“Done,” Ronnie proclaimed clapping her hands together. I open my eyes and stare at the mirror in front of me and to my surprise I looked astonishing, she had also done my makeup. My Light brown hair was up in a messy bun that didn’t look entirely messy, she had done my makeup to match my eyes, a light blue color. I turned around and hug Ronnie so tightly I heard her gasp. Releasing her I slowly walk out of the bathroom back to my closet to get out a pair of heels. Picking out a regular white pair of heels I slip them on and find Ronnie waiting outside impatiently. Rolling my eyes I walk to the ball room which was down 3 halls. Slowly walking up to the ball room doors on the floor level I sneak in so no one could clap or give me an introduction. My father spotted me and rushed towards me. I sigh at my failure to NOT get spotted.

“Princess, why didn’t you come down the stairs everyone is waiting for you,” my father exclaimed using my nickname from a long time ago. Looking pass him I see most of the guest looking at the stairs with impatient glares. I silently laugh as one of them cursed and turned around to leave.

“I’m here,” I yelled at everyone and they all turned around and stare at me silently then they all cheered. Slowly I arch an eyebrow in questioning at my father.

“You are now the best vampire slayer in our community.” I nodded and walked away as
everyone else went back to talking. I walked up to one of my cousins and smiled at her.

“Vampires,” she hissed coldly then looked at me and brightened up, “see without Karen all of us would be grumpy teenagers worrying about if we were going to die from a vampire.” I roll my eyes and smiled at all of her friends.

“Natalie, does Karen ever talk,” a blond girl my height asked completely confused. I sigh and nodded, that isn’t exactly proving that I do talk, I thought to myself.

“I do, just not here at these types of get together’s I dislike it, almost as much as I dislike vampires,” I told her and a smile creped up on my cousin’s face.

“I would like you all to meet my infamous cousin, Karen Kain, the best female vampire slayer in our world.” I looked over at Natalie and she was smiling at her friends proclaiming that she is related to me. I laugh and everyone in the whole ball room just stopped and starred.

“So I can’t laugh,” I asked them kind of sadly, I like laughing. Everyone was still silent and stilled, I turned around and scanned the room, nothing their all looking at me. Even the pianist stopped playing, so I started to walk over there and sat next to him.

“Hey do you want to hit the keys and make a sound come out of the piano,” I asked silently and he cracked a smile then started playing. Only a few people broke from their stares and started a new conversation but after a few minutes it was completely back to normal. Slowly sitting up I look around the room and spotted Natalie and her friends again and stalked over to them.

“I made a mental note to myself, do not laugh in public,” I told them softly and let myself loosen and I grew a careless smile. Natalie started to talk and ended the sentence with the word Demon. I wasn’t completely there so I didn’t hear most of what she said.

“They are cold monsters just like vampires,” the blond one snarled. It’s true, Demons are just the same, just a tad bit more powerful and born in that state of natural.

“Cold hearted cold blooded,” I stated softly to myself not expecting anyone to hear, but all three of the girls starred at me then snapped out of it. They continued their conversation on Demons and started to talk about their hearts.

“They have no heart, in an emotional way and in a physical way,” I told them getting bored of the subject and I was about to say something else but got sidetracked. I saw something move, not a vampire though, I would’ve been able to feel it come. The room went silent and for once it wasn’t because of me.

“We have hearts, it beats just as yours does,” a male’s voice said from behind me. Turning around quickly my hand reached for the spot where my knife is under my gown. I came face to face with a guy my age 18, he had piercing green eyes like a field of grass on a spring day, but they didn’t look happy like that they looked…depressing. The crowd noticed I had my guard up and they began to relax, I on the other hand did not. So he is a Demon, I thought to myself. My eyes like ice starred at him, half wondering who he is studying him, half ready to kill if I needed to. He was doing the same starring at me, but I couldn’t figure out what he was getting out of it.

“KK,” I heard a little girl’s scream. I felt a smile peaking out and I turned around towards the voice and saw my 5 year old cousin running towards me saving from this Demon. I knelt on my knees and opened my arms wide and she ran into them hugging my happily. She called me by my nickname, KK as in Karen Kain. Hugging Cynthia I look over at the Demon who was still starring at me, then I look over the crowd they were completely normal. Curiously I continue to scan the room but my eyes kept adverting to the Demon.

“CC, where is your mom,” I asked her standing up and brushing off my gown. She pointed pass the Demon to my aunt. Smiling I kiss her on the cheek and walked over to her mother, my aunt. When I was next to her I smiled and tuned into her conversation, it was about me. Confused I continued to listen and came to the conclusion that she was just proud of me and bragging. I tapped on her shoulder and she jumped and turned to me.

“Oh god, you scared me,” she exclaimed pinning her hand to her heart exaggerating it. Smiling I hugged her and my smile faded when I felt a pair of eyes on me, I scanned the room again and saw no one looking at me, but the Demon. My aunt digressed from me and forget I was there so I stalked over to the Demon.

“Why are you here,” I asked silently, so he and I were the only ones listening. He stopped starring and adverted his eyes then they rested on me again.

“Because I need to steal you,” he said silently as I did. Sighing I turned
