Dead silence, that’s what filled the court room. A bunch of old creatures sat on the outer skirt of the benches and brutally ripped me apart with their eyes. Me, myself and I stood lonely and afraid in the middle of it all. I played at my finger tips and kept my gaze at my feet not daring to glimpse into their devilish eyes. Why am I afraid you may ask? Why am I in front of the councils you may think? Well, my story is like nothing else out there and by the time you’re finished reading about it… Let’s just say you’ll feel magical!
-------------------------------------------------
Anxiety dwelled within Skye’s chest causing her to collapse onto her bed and giggle loudly. She tilts her head to her yorkie, Fido. “Am I crazy boy?” She says practically to the air. Fido’s ears perked and he raises his head from his paws yawning in annoyance. Skye shrugs and pulls herself to her feet swirling around the room in happiness. Today was the first the first day of the rest of her life. See, Skye is a witch yet she doesn’t know it. What she does know is that her mother is hiding something truly important from her and ever since her sixteenth year had come her mother gets stranger and stranger as the days approached. Maybe today she will get answers, knowing that it was her birthday she was fueled even more to provoke her mother in telling her something.
Skye stops spinning and stares at herself in the standing mirror by her closet. Her jet black hair was pulled into a neat ponytail with a few lose strands dropping against her round smooth face. Her piercing green eyes twinkled in the sunlight radiating from her bedroom window and her slim short stature posed naturally. She smiles to herself and grabs her blue floral dress from the bed quickly pulling it over her head. She laces her black All Stars and clicks her tongue signaling for Fido to come to her. Her jumps onto her lap and nests himself as she runs her soft skinny fingers through his soft Neapolitan fur.
There was a small knock at her door and her mother’s gorgeous face pops in. “Good morning sweetie. Are you ready for school? Trey and Tami are already downstairs.” Her voice sings. Skye’s mother was beautiful. Unlike Skye her skin has a tan and her eyes were pale blue but shimmered anyway. She was slim and curvaceous and with that magnificent smile. She could’ve won any man she desired yet she chose Skye's father.
Skye stands from her bed letting Fido fall to the floor and she brushes herself off. Her mother nods before exiting the room. Skye gives herself one last glance in the mirror and a flick of the ponytail and starts down the stairs.
Trey, Tami and her mother sat at the table eating breakfast. When Skye entered all eyes fell on her and her cheeks suddenly felt hot. “Don’t look at me.” She blushes pulling up a seat next to Trey. Trey was the first guy Skye had met when she had first moved to town and her first crush. He was so nice to her at the bus stop even though he had commented severely on her wretched outfit her mother gave her to wear. A dark green and bright blue shirt with a milky orange pair of shorts.
. He has curly brown hair cut short above his ears, deep dark brown eyes that scopes her body every time they were together and bronze colored skin. Trey had swept her off of her feet and has yet to put her back down. But Skye or Trey has never had the guts to confess their feelings to each other. Or so Skye thought.
“Happy Birthday Girl!” Tami screams nudging Skye in her side. Tami was one of the wild ones and is Skye’s bestest friend ever even though Skye hated her the first time they met. Tami was a typical blonde with blue eyes but her very attractive and outgoing personality grabs the guys attention and it caught Skye’s as well that’s why now the two are inseparable. Trey had introduced them when they were on the bus well actually Tami introduced herself and they all played a game of Kiss or Dare. That’s when Skye suspected something was different about her.
Flash
“Hi!” Tami practically screams. Skye gave her an annoyed glare but she didn't budge. “What's your name?” She continues. Skye could see she's not the one to take no for an answer so she shifts uncomfortably and clears her throat.
"What's your name?" Skye said trying to mimic her. Tami only smiles wider.
"You speak! Oh, good I was just about to leave!" She says teasing Skye and holding at her chest. Skye couldn't help but smile with her. "What's your name?"
"Skye, you?" She says uneasily. Skye gave her the evil eye and Tami shoots it right back.
"Tamitha but you can call me Tami." Trey clears his throat to catch their attention but Tami only crawls over his lap to get by Skye. "Don't mind him." She says waving him off. “I have a game we all can play to pass this long bus ride. It’s called Kiss or Dare.” Her tone changed to a scary voice but it only made Skye want to play more. She was always interested in mysterious things and Tami was giving her just that.
“I dare you to kiss that gum on the seat, Trey.” Tami dares giggling to herself with her hand covering her mouth. There was a moist sticky gum with hairs and dust attached to the seat in which they sat. Trey was taken aback but for Skye’s sake and his tough guy image he closed his eyes and puckered his lips. Skye couldn’t stand to see him do it as she squeezed her eyes shut to the point where they watered and clenched her fists wishing and even praying for it to disappear. When gasps surrounded the back of the bus Skye slowly opened her eyes. There staring right in front of her was a bright red rose that sent the sweet smell of nature into her nostrils. Skye hesitated but reached out and touched it dragging it from beneath Trey’s lips. His eyes were also shut so he didn't notice what had happened.
“No way!” Tami gasped covering her mouth with her hands. “What just happened?”
Skye inspected the delicate rose with her fingertips holding it up to the sun. Suspicions arose in the back of the bus and all the while eyes were now planted on Skye in awe.
Present
Skye begins to nibble at her toast and risks the consequences of glancing at both Trey and her mother. Trey was gulping down his water when she looked at him and she giggles to herself at how hungry he looked. He puts down his glass, wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and smiles warmly. Skye blushes a little and diverts her gaze to her eggs and bacon all assembled to make a cute little smiley face on a single crunchy toast. She now glances shyly at her mother who was reading a magazine and dropped her chins between her collar bones. Skye clears her throat trying to get everyone’s attention which she was soon granted when everyone looked up.
“Happy Birthday darling.” Her mother charms flashing her a wide genuine smile.
“Happy birthday Skye.” Trey follows and wraps his arm around her shoulder bringing her in for a brief hug. Skye savored every moment and closed her eyes inhaling his unique sensational scent. He smelt like vanilla drowned in the sweet aroma of spicy musk. She quickly nuzzles her head into his shoulders and inhales one last time. This sent her the feeling of having something sweet.
“Thanks you guys.” Skye finally says and pushes her chair back to stand. She walks to the refrigerator to get some OJ and pushes her head into it scanning the numerous items that occupied it. “Mom, we’re all out of juice. Now what am I going to drink to calm my lack of sugar?” She groans and makes her way back to the table and plops back into her seat in disappointment.
Her mother waves her off and continues to read her magazine. Skye sighs and closes her eyes for a second and when she opened them there sitting on the table was a chilled jug of OJ. Skye quickly shots her mother a look only to see her wide eyed and nervous staring at the OJ as well. Trey and Tami were too busy eating to notice the current situation. Skye stares attentively at her mother and the juice to see their connections. She tried to gather her words to speak but nothing surfaced instead she pointed to the jug. Skye reaches her hand out further and runs her fingers along the condensation of the clear jug.
Her mother quickly recovers from shock and begins to hurriedly collect the juice dropping her papers onto the floor. She jogs to the sink and pours the juice down the drain. She faces Skye and exhales bringing her hand to her head.
“Let’s get some cake shall we?” She covers and exits the room leaving the kids to mingle.
“I think I might walk to school today.” Skye announces and hesitantly brings her water to her lips. Tami finally looks up from her dine and gives her a knowing look. Trey also looks over at her. “I mean it’s not going to rain or anything. I just want to get some fresh air for my birth- I mean lungs.”
Tami brushes a lock of hair from her face and smiles faintly. “I’m sorry Skye but I can’t walk today. Josh is already on his way over here.” She informs. Josh was Tami's thuggish boyfriend and didn't desevre her one bit. He even made a pass on Skye the one time they were left alone.
Skye sighs and sinks into her seat blowing a strand of hair from her eye. “Fine, you go ahead Tami. I’ll walk by myself.” She says.
“I’m not doing anything.” Trey shrugs. Skye instantly felt her body shiver and warmth rise from her chest. She had to remind herself to keep her cool in front of him and breathe. Her mother soon re-entered the room cradling a small cake in her hand. It was a simple chocolate cake with green and white icing, Skye’s favorite. She places it gently in front of Skye and proceeds in lighting her sixteen candles. When she finished she gazed up at Skye and brushed her knuckles against her face. Tears welded in her eyes but she quickly diverted them to the cake.
“Well, since you guys are leaving in about a minute I don’t think the traditional birthday singing and candle blowing ceremony should be performed.” She mumbled between cries. “We all know my sweet is growing up.” She bent over and blew the candles out herself. Skye couldn’t help herself and laughed at her mother yet behind those giggles were a ball of concerns forming inside of her. She couldn’t dodge the fact that her birthday was causing something in their household or her mother.
“Is there something wrong, mom?” Skye forces herself to say. “I mean, you’ve been acting really strange lately.” She had the courage to say it in front of her friends because she knew it couldn’t have been possible without them. Her mother stops dividing the cake and plucking out the candles
