I was always told that life wasn't simple, but I never though it could get this complicated! Most people go day by day with no worries, but I have to go day by day worrying if I will live till the next day. Today was worst of all... I came home after school and was happy because I got a +B on my math exam. When I walked through the door my step mother was sitting on the couch reading the paper; I quickly got my exam out of my bag and showed it to her.
"Emma, what is this?"
"This is the math exam we had to take today. I studied all last night and this morning and I think I did pretty good!"
"Pretty good?!" Sonya, my step-mother mocked. "What is this crap? You should have studied more! You will never be good enough for any college! You aren't smart, pretty, and you are a complete waiste of time! I don't know why I bother keeping you. I should just send you to that bootcamp where all the other peasants go."
I was stunned. Sonya tells me that all the time, but not by screaming at me.
"Please Sonya! I don't need to go to bootcamp, I'll do better, I promise! Just give me another chance! I can retake it. Please..."
"Oh please, don't be such a whinney bitch! No point in retaking it. Now go do the dishes and the laundry before your father gets home." Sonya demanded.
"yes ma'am."

"EMMA!" Sonya shouted.
I jumped at Sonya's loud, obnoxious voice.
"Yes ma'am?"
"You missed a spot! This is a new china dish! I expect it to be cleaned perfectly! And since it is not, you need to be punished!"
My voice shook as she replied,
"Yes ma'am."
"Yes ma'am, what?!" Sonya shouted, demanding an answer.
"Yes ma'am. I do deserve a punishment." I responded with warning knowing it wasn't going to be a painless punishment.
Sonya forcefully pulled me to her side and pushed me forward.
"WALK!"
Sonya was following me to the basement, her hands still wrapped securely around my arms. Sonya calls this the cell, it only contains a twinsize bed, small, dusty lamp, a leather belt, whip, chains, handcuffs and a rusted toilet with paper towel. When you walk into the room the smell of blood and dust lingers in the air. This room is located in the basement. My father never goes down there because Sonya has told him that it only has her belongings scattered everywhere. She was so commited to making him believe this that the first five feet of the basement hallway she stacked boxes filled with old frames and pictures to the ceiling, just making a little path. At the end of the five feet was a corner, so he couldn't see past it. James, my father, was never gutsy or curious enough to go explore the basement, so he just left it to be Sonya's cave filled with fears, tears, and blood.
We arrived to the door of the cell where I stopped in my tracks. To affraid of what would be my next nightmare waiting for me in there. I stood there for a few seconds taking in the smells, viewing what would be my next painful nightand if I could escape. Before I had any time to come up with a plan, Sonya kicked me behind my knees and pushed me. I went tumbling down to the cement floor. The dust whirled up from the ground and into the air, falling slowly to my face.
"Get up, you unsightly child!"
I abrubtly stood to my feet. Caughing as I breathed in the still, lingering dust in the air. She pulled my arms infront of me and put the silver, rusted handcuffs around my wrists and tightly latched them, then locking them with a small key. She kicked me behind the knees again, not trying to hide the agressiveness within her kick. I instantly fell to the ground. I was in the perfect position to pray for God's mercy, but I didn't get a chance to. She took the leather belt and tied me to the wooden bed post. My arms promptly lost feeling with how tight the cuffs were and the position I was placed in, I knew I would have bruises tomorrow and hardly any circulation running through my arms. I don't know what my cover story for my teachers will be tomorrow at school.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Sonya take the whip off the cement bricked wall and twirled it between her fingers and said,
"You have been a very bad girl today, Emma. Bad girls have to get punished. If we let you get away with this, you will never learn." She said still twirling the black whip between her long, skinny fingers. "I hope you think about all that you have done!" Her voice raised as she has said her last few words.
The whip quickly lashed across my back, I'm sure leaving a large scrape across my back that will soon be swollen and maybe bleeding. The pain swept over me, leaving me in a daze. I couldn't move, scream for help or even see. My vision was blured almost instantly and everything kept darkening as the whip lashed across my back repetedly. Knowing I could do nothing to stop her, I let my body give out and let sleep and pain over take me, I was hoping forever.
The Next Day

Dedication:
I dedicate this story to the love of my life. The guy who has been my friend for years and has hidden his love for me because he didn't wan't to ruin our friendship. I was confused with my life and going through a lot for a long time, he has always been there for me and knows me better than I know myself. I guess the quote "Stop looking for it because what you are looking for is right in front of you," was right. This is for you Colin.
