โItโs good to see youโ she smiled.
He nodded, unable to find the words he needed. Something about her was so enchanting and it was taking his breath away. He had a thousand things to say to her but had no idea where to start.
โHow have you been?โ he asked.
โI saw Boris todayโ she replied โit went better than I expected. He seems to agree that we werenโt really right for each other, Iโm so glad that I ended things before we were actually married, now we can both focus on finding who we should be with.โ
Something about her words, so sure and self-confident, elevated his heart. He could see in her eyes that she knew who and what she wanted.
โI went home and started looking through all my thingsโ she continued โI had stuff that I had completely forgotten about.โ
โThat must have been nice for youโ he murmured.
She nodded โI found somethings from when we were seeing each other, you know, before.โ
โOh?โ he asked.
โIt made me realise what I really wantโ she smiled โI realised that I donโt want to date you.โ
Chris felt his heart twist and he suddenly got a pain in his chest. How could he have been so wrong? He was certain that she felt the same way as he did and now he had been made to look like a fool. He stood up โI had better go.โ
She blinked in confusion then stood up quickly โOh, no, you donโt understand.โ
He nodded โI understand perfectly.โ
Nicky let out a sigh of frustration, she had completely blundered again โplease let me explain.โ
โYou donโt need to explainโ he said quickly, as he began to walk out of the pub. He needed to be away from her and away from his own embarrassment. He had gone there intending to declare his love for her and she had stomped all over it.
โChris, wait.โ She called from behind him โlet me finish what I was saying.โ
โI donโt need to hear anymore.โ He shouted back.
โOh, for Godโs sakeโ she bellowed โI love you!โ
He stopped and turned around, just in time to see her stop in front of him. She took a moment to get her breath back, he had been walking fast and she had never been too fit.
โYou love me?โ he asked, desperate to make sure he heard her correctly.
โYes, I love youโ she replied โI loved you four years ago and I love you know. I am in love with you.โ
He shook his head and pointed to the pub โbut I donโt understand, you said-โ
She winced โI said it wrong; I meant I donโt just want to date you, I want to marry you.โ
He blinked โyou what?โ
โWe are past the dating stageโ she answered โI donโt want to spend hours in a pub with you trying to work out if we will suit. I have known we were meant for each other since the moment we met so why bother dating? Will you marry me?โ
Chris looked at her and smiled. In that moment he saw his heart in her eyes and his soul in her smile and he knew there was only one answer he could give her. โYes, I will marry you.โ
He took her in his arms and they kissed for longest minute and once they were finished they both laughed. After four years they had managed to find the happiness they needed in each other and Chris would hold on to it forever.
Epilogue
Twelve months later
Nicky picked at her dress impatiently. It was nearly time for the best day of her life and she could hardly wait. Twelve months of planning and she still felt like there was something she had forgotten.
Since that wonderful moment when she had told Chris how she felt everything had been smooth sailing. With Boris she had been left to plan everything on her own, something she had particularly liked, but Chris had taken an active hand in the wedding arrangements.
Her parentโs had been shocked when she announced that she was engaged again, less than a week after walking out of her wedding, but after meeting Chris they had given their blessing. El had been overjoyed too but had insisted that they wait until after her and Gregโs wedding before getting married. They had done but only just, El and Greg had been married for only a month.
Nicky glanced up at the clock, ten to two, and felt her heart beat a bit faster. Soon she would stop being Nicola Bennett of Crowmarsh and become Nicola Williams of Didcot.
Chris had told her that he wanted to move back to Didcot the night they had got engaged. She had been unsure at first but then she realised the move would be the fresh start that she needed. They had found a house together, quite close to his sister, and were moving in after the honeymoon.
There was a knock on the door and her father entered the room โYou ready Nicky?โ
She nodded โas ready as I will ever be.โ
โYou wonโt run out of this one?โ he joked.
She smiled โno chance. This is what I want, and what I have always wanted. Iโm not letting him get away again.โ
